TBF the Sharks were fucking awesome tonight.

The Sharks played well but explain Penrith, Manly, Brisbane on top of Cronulla... like they say it's a tighter comp, that's because the standard of play has dropped from the top teams

I wouldn't include Penrith in there. They are one of the top teams tbh, just had a horror first week.

Penrith are pretenders, you only have to look at last season how they collapsed, they aren't going to win a premiership with that team

I wouldnt say fucking awesome, yes they played well but only scored 3 trys,they only made us pay with all the mistakes we made, but in saying that with all the mistakes we made they should of scored alot more, in the 3 trys 1 was a dropped morris bomb and the only the sharkes bloke walked through 3 pissweak tackles, any other team i feel the score line would of been huge

Wouldn't agree with that. The first five weeks are always lotteries on who are the best teams and who are going to be battling it out for the spoon. After this period of time you start to get an indication on who are the contenders and who are the pretenders.

FWIW, I reckon Melbourne, St George, Wests, Sydney, Canterbury and Canberra are the ones to be fighting it our come late September. They just seem to all have quality on paper, and even though some are showing some inconsistency at present, will start to show their genuine title aspirations in the coming months or so.

i think if you look over the past couple of seasons you can make the top 4 losing more games than a team would in the past, like its my personal belief that the standard of the comp is poorer than previous seasons, going back to 04'... like a team that came last should not be able to then be a genuine contender the next season let alone make a grand final, it shows how average the quality is that this is possible

The comp had nothing to do with it, the roosters brought a new coach and also recruited one of the best young talents in there ranks it was clear to see why they went from last to 2nd

that shouldn't be good enough to get to a Grand Final tbh... like a team that came 6th made the Grand Final, what does that say for teams 2-5?

So you want a boring epl style comp where games are predictable?

I want dynasties, i'm not afraid of saying that, i want to see teams be rewarded for consistent hard work over a number of years with multiple premierships and long winding narratives between teams... For example in the AFL and the rise and fall of Geelong has been fascinating to watch imo... I think the Melbourne Manly rivarly was good just like the Easts Canterbury rivarly in the early 00's was great to watch, i think it turns abit mickey mouse if you can take the premiership ladder from the last season shake it all over the place and have 2nd run 14th, teams should have highs and lows over the years, but not bloody bi-polar

Looking at that roosters team in 2009 last was not a true indication of there talent,i dont know what the problem was in there team but having those players you shouldnt be coming last,But i do get what your saying you want saints 11 years in a row kinda thing?

Off-field fight looms for Sharks over $300m development plan

CRONULLA'S plans for a $300 million development to ensure the future of the football club has hit a snag with the local council poised to petition a newly elected NSW government to put the brakes on the project.

The move comes less than a day after a Sharks team, which was written off this season following its embarrassing loss to Canberra in round one, scored a memorable win over premier St George Illawarra at Toyota Stadium on Monday night.

Sutherland Shire councillor Reverend George Capsis, the club's former chaplain, has raised concerns over the planned shopping precinct and residential complex to be built around Toyota Stadium which was endorsed by leagues club members last month.

"My opinion is this will not save the club," Capsis said.

"There's other ways of trying to save club and I understand Newcastle has a benefactor coming in to try and buy the club and maybe we need something like that.

"This particular development will not save the club.

"It might make some people some money upfront for them to walk away from it and leave it all in tatters. If we go down this track, I predict we'll end up like poor old Newtown or North Sydney or someone like that."

Council has been frustrated after the current NSW Labor government amended the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act in 2005 to introduce a new amendment to deal with major projects.

The controversial amendment gives the Planning Minister sole discretion over any site deemed state significant and has been criticised for bypassing local council and limiting public participation.

NSW Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell, heavily favoured to be the NSW Premier by Sunday, has indicated he will scrap the amended planning law - Part 3A - but it is believed applications which have already been approved will stand.

Capsis has already prepared a motion for the next council meeting which will be held within two weeks of Saturday's state election.

It states: "That a strong submission be made to the newly elected NSW government explaining that it is not sufficient that Part 3A not apply to future major projects but that any proposals under Part 3A which remain undetermined should not continue to be assessed under that regime.

"It should be argued in the submission that Part 3A is so fundamentally flawed that undetermined applications should be determined under a different system."

Capsis said there were several reasons the development should not go ahead including the site being contaminated - it is an old landfill tip - which could release toxic gases when excavated.

"For a start I think there are environmental problems with this whole project and it might not go ahead on those grounds," Capsis said.

"The consortium and the board have presented this to the club members as if it's a fait accompli. They haven't told them the truth.

"The actual logistics of building what they're proposing is another matter. How long is it going to take? They need money now. They need money straight away. Every time we're in financial trouble down there they bring this development out of the closet and every time it gets more elaborate, but from a footy perspective I can't see it.

"We need another way of saving the club."

Capsis has the backing of a group of concerned residents, the North Cronulla Precinct Committee, which has called on council and the developers to provide more detail about the effects on traffic and parking, sports fields and the wetlands environment.
