Music, circus and comedy still popular in arts

by: By Cameron Adams From: National Features August 20, 2012 5:23PM

AUSTRALIA’S live performance industry generated $1.3 billion last year with Cold Chisel and Mary Poppins among our most popular bums-on-seats drawcards.
Exactly 17,345,720 tickets for live performances – including music, comedy, theatre, circus and family events – were sold in Australia last year.

The $1.3 billion figure, calculated by Live Performance Australia, is a slight drop from 1.32 billion in 2010.
The largest growth areas were circus and physical theatre (such as Cirque du Soleil), children’s and family events (such as Walking With Dinosaurs) and comedy - the Melbourne Comedy Festival had an 11-per-cent increase from 2010.

Music festivals suffered a slight loss of 4.4-per-cent to $96.4 million – the biggest festivals being Future Music, Splendour in the Grass and the Big Day Out.

2011 saw revenue and attendance drop in the category of contemporary live music – from $659.10 million in 2010 to $539.27 million, a drop of 18.2-per-cent.

Last year’s highest-grossing tours were by Michael Buble, Cold Chisel, Usher, Elton John, Eminem, Rihanna, Justin Bieber and Kings of Leon.

The drop has been attributed to bigger artists touring in 2010 – including U2, AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Metallica and Lady Gaga.

The average concert ticket price rose by 0.6-per-cent to $103.45 from $102.78 in 2010.

In a state by state breakdown, New South Wales generated over $192 million in contemporary music ticket sales, Victoria $157 million, Queensland $82 million, Western Australia $62 million, South Australia $38 million, Canberra $4 million, Tasmania $1.6 million and the Northern Territory $445,930.

Musical theatre revenue rose slightly to $246.79, with attendance growing by 7.2-per-cent – the average ticket price also decreased from $98.84 in 2010 to $92.79 last year.

The biggest theatre productions were Mary Poppins, Jersey Boys, Love Never Dies, Wicked and Hairspray.

From what I hear, Marty only ever has a little tool.

Sister scored me a soundwave ticket. Knew she'd come in handy one day.

Will have to check that out then. Heard Ni***s in Paris, enjoyed that as well.

Been listening to Tonight Alive, Angels and Airwaves and Cherri Bomb today. Cherri Bomb are so talented for 16 year old's. Lead singer is a babe as well.

As for Angels and Airwaves, can't recommend them enough if anyone's looking for a good alternative rock band. Love them, top 10 band for me easily.

He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

He's big into video games (he has literally +1000 in his library) so yeah that probably influences him. He's only just got Reason (after using and mastering FLstudio) so he hasn't quite got the hang of it but he really does get better every time he makes something.

Pretty sure AJ said they would. May have to try and get Sideshow tickets to one if you want to see them both.

That new Stone Sour stuff sounds sick. Really liking that direction. New Amity sounds decent. Doesn't really grab me, I think because it's pretty much the same as what they've been doing for a while now. Still, not a bad song, and I'm still looking forward to their gig this Oct.
