I know we are all hipsters here when it comes to games like this but come on its a bit of fun
and if sydney fc win their fans get to claim they are the best club in the world and be their usual irritating selves for 24 hours without anyone complaining

Don't take life so seriously mate Sorry but this is just the ongoing disrespect that football continues to deal with in this country. I don't mind some light hearted banter but this is a reflection on how we are perceived in the country. It's embarrassing. I am embarrassed for the ABC.

If that grey-haired dude in the middle is considered a comedian then our culture needs an enema
He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

Wow. This is possibly the worst pre game show I've ever seen. The whiteboard thing that just happened was just too much. Im not sure how to take any of this, is it a skit, will there be graphics or anything at some stage? Will we even have commentators. If this was a sport i hated id think it was hilarious.

+x+x+x+xHave Sydney touched the ball? LOOOOLLL Stupid comment, Brillante clearly lost the ball... Haha suck it Suck what? I honestly don't care. Just a stupid comment Okay. Yes Einstein, Brillante touched the ball. In fact many Sydney players have touched the ball and promptly turned it over. “Have Sydney touched the ball” may have been a way of saying “Wow. Sydney have barely touched the ball” but perhaps you can't read between the lines. As you were.

+x+xHave Sydney touched the ball? LOOOOLLL Stupid comment, Brillante clearly lost the ball... I think we could see in this game, why Brillante was found out in Italy. He had a disaster of a debut for Fiorentina and hardly featured again. Apparently he trained well, had a good pre-season but come the match level, intensity of Serie A and he was lost. In the A-League he was a rock, hardly put a foot wrong this season. But his poor capability on the ball and in distribution - when you actually press him he crumbles and hopefully more A-League teams learn of this and exploit Sydney FC far more next season. Guys like Brillante will cough it up when you make them panic. He and O'Neill just had too much time and space on the ball this season. FTR They pressed O'Neill too and he did too cough it up at times, but he also coped better on other occasions with his close ball control and half decent switch passing and lobs. It shows how reliant Sydney are too, on Ninkovic, with their on the ball play. It's a shame Holosko wasn't on the field either as I think he may've been a good outlet and his physical capability, aswell as technical, would've actually cause Carragher and co some trouble. It's still a surprise they've let him go, but hopefully Arnie and co have scouted some good quality to replace him - They really should be able to.

It didn't just show how reliant Sydney are on Ninkovic for his ball play but also for his off the ball work. Sydney have relied upon the high intensity press that he and Holosko can provide out wide, in comparison Carney and Blackwood may as well not have entered the field. Bobo and Brosque's defensive positions were made redundant with the lack of support and Liverpool were free to attack Brillante and O'Neill making them unable to provide their usual cover defence.

+xBro thats not excatly an epl starting teamIts a second team with players who have come out of retirement And this team is still miles ahead, Firmino and Sturridge who are running the show are absolute quality. +x+xBro thats not excatly an epl starting teamIts a second team with players who have come out of retirement And Sydney is a team that's been forced to put their holidays off for two weeks so that Liverpool can make 6 million in a glorified marketing exercise. Does anyone really expect them to give a shit? This is why this post season friendly idea is horrible, both teams couldn't care less. One has been on holidays for weeks, the other played 3 days ago and have been having post season parties with a bunch of ex players.

Or Ninkovic, Buijs, Holosko and Dimitrijevic who decided theyd rather take their holiday earlier?

Sturridge surprised by the quality of that ball from Zulo a few minutes ago. Best ball he had all season.

@redkat Anyone who knows football would have said that if sydney won it would have been impressive because the liverpool team is still a strong team even if its not the first team. Its just that liverpool have such a world class team that their second team filled with youth and legends is still good

+xgreat advertisement for the A-league. the A league champions smashed by a B team with retired players. Its the type of game thats doomed either way for us. Win and its "Well it was only liverpool legends and youth players", lose and it "you cant even beat liverpool legends and youth". This fixture was never going to convert eurosnobs. Of course that and A-League champions missing a number of key players smashed by poor Liverpool side in game no one got out of second year. Wonder what the plan was for this game from Arnie we have barely pressed.

Liverpool put out a team that would fit for a League Cup game buddy, that first half they made Sydney look average given they got off the plane this morning/late last night too. Sure sydney had a few foreign players unavailable but it would not be huge difference There intensity and touch were another level and in the end, it shows where the a-league has to go, which is good as were need to measure ourselves against the best to see where we are at.

Really , I never ever want to hear another whinge from A-League coaches about scheduling between ACL matches, half the Liverpool team played a few days ago the other half are either from the youth team or nearly 40 and not played a professional match in years and are making Shitney look stupid

I actually enjoyed the cringe-fest that was John Conway Tonight and Chen was the best part of this telecast - that deadpan humour, subversion, dry delivery and timing. Indeed this game deserved was a guy unveiling an NFL shirt - It's about the level of the NFL novelty event, when 70k turn up to just be bored and do the wave, because there is soo little to interest them on the field. It's all about the moolah, so I hope the FFA and our game, got our share and not just the visitors who take it up with them and leave.

ABC got it all wrong, they saw "meaningless friendly" and thought they'd try and make it light and humorous rather than serious. At best the balance was wrong and there should have been some knowledgable football people in the pre-game, at worst our football audience take themselves too seriously and couldn't handle anything comedic.

+x@city i dont post constant nonsenseJust cause i tell the hard truth and i aay things u dont like doesnt mean its nonsense Sorry to be blunt, but I agree that the majority of what you post is just pure nonsense. What's more, that's even before considering the appalling spelling, non-existent punctuation, and semi-intelligible grammar.

By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

One of my favourite moments of when Spurs came to Melbourne was the plastics at the game trying to start a mexican wave and it getting to the Spurs fans and nobody joining in to a chorus of boos.

This has been garbage from pre-show to the game itself. What a cock-up for football in this country, hopefully the ratings are sh*t and no ones been watching.

The two youngsters that have come on have better touch than most older A-league players. More evidence that this next gen is way more technical than generations of the past.

+xWell, having watched the shit SFC served up tonight I will now support an FFA ban on touring teams. Don't panic Waz - it's still about the bottom line and if it somehow boosts the coffers, then still no harm in a glorified pre-season game. As Bluebird and many have said, there can be no different if it's Steen's 'Sydney Olympic' or it's 'Liverpool' - it's Post/Pre-Season to loosen some cobwebs and give some fringe players and youngsters a run out to boost their confidence and perform infront of the coach in match conditions. Can be some motivation too and for the youngsters with talent and drive, a good stage to impress and promote their talents infront of touring coaching staff. Connor Pain and Bernie Ibini did well, in games like this and others have too, in the past. For young players, including those having a run with Liverpool tonight, it's the way they can get an opportunity and with such opportunities some stand-up which leads to further opportunities down the road. It's just a shame that Kulesvki (sp) kid fluffed up his chance, later in the second half. Some of the SFC youngsters acquitted themselves quite well, even though the intensity had dropped. If anything, George Blackwood should have been subbed sooner, pulling up short, as too Flottmann for a spent Wilkinson. Antoniou delivered a nice cross-field pass or two (That set-up the Kulevski chance) and should have come on a bit sooner too as we've seen enough of Brillante and O'Neill this season and Brillante was off his feet, as was Zullo and some others doing all that chasing first half. To see McManaman subbed on sooner than some of the SFC young guns, that's where we can blame Arnie and his conservatism! Lokolingoy and Antoniou seem as promising as fans have suggested - they really need to feature next season and may well do with SFC's ACL campaign.

No i don't think we should, purely on the basis of being exposed better opposition and getting the rights arguments started about the level of the A league or Aus football in general and what needs to be done to improve it instead of being comfortable just playing in the A league against local opposition who almost mirror the same tactics as other A league teams bar one or 2

I know Liverpool were always going to be a class above Sydney but it was very unlike Sydney not to be pressing hard and at least triynm accelerated counter attacks, Maybe they were still a bit hungover from just finishing the season. I'm not a Sydney supporter but i reckon the youngsters did quite well bar the guy that missed the tap in LOL

I always thought HAL teams tried to play at their best against these glamour European teams.Apparently not for SFC. This was a pretend Liverpool team with a few pensioners and SFC still looked like an npl team. SFC playing out from the back? When did they start that? They looked like Brisbane under Mulvey before he got sacked and That was Liverpool hardly pressing. Clearly without Ninkovic SFC are a very average side.

Yeah i cant take claims of ABC 'making a mockery of our game' when Liverpool started players who are years retired.
That to me is more of a mockery than any cringey television coverage.

Here's a bit of surprising news people might need to sit down for: The Socceroos wont win the world cup. They wont make the semis or the quarters. They may not even make the round of 16 But I'll be joining hundreds of thousands of Australians in watching the Socceroos play Sport isn't about winning and losing. It is about seeing people or teams compete. Its about the skill, the decisions, the different plays, and even seeing the elite perform. If you have any doubts about what last night was for, listen to Simon's post match interview If you only watch sport to see your team win, then that makes you a gambler. Makes sense why Australian sport is balanced. Makes sense why we have a day off for a horse race, and gambling ads at every turn. I guess sport for you is how much money you lose on your good for nothing team. I pity you actually ABC coverage aside I was happy with last night's game. As were a lot of people. Yes Sydney were outclassed but zero surprises there. We have a salary cap and a balanced competition. A League teams might look good in their own league but we aren't up to the grade of teams that play competitively, instead of playing so weak fans can win money. It also spends an end to the Myth the finals teaches / rewards teams to stand up where it counts. See what the Grand Final winner did last night? People calling for bans on games like this don't get competitive sport. That don't get why sports fans live, breath, eat and shit sport. They don't get why kids dream of moments like these and shell out hundreds of dollars The A League has already proven with the ACL that it cant hide from the poor structural decisions. And last nights game continues to reinforce this. Its not games like this that causes the A League to look bad. Its having every league structured like a horse race A League teams just have to continue to use games like these and the ACL games to push the FFA for some common sense. We are part of a world of competitive sport. Those who don't like it can go back to the AFL and live in the sheltered reality that West Sydney is an Aussie Rules powerhouse despite not having a league 3 years ago

It's getting quite predictable from you. The reality is no one expects Sydney FC to compete with liverpool in a meaningless friendly game salary cap or not so nobody is surprised by that at all. Ajax Amsterdam lost to a Man United side with a budget that's triple the size of poor little Ajax, modern football is all about the money and has virtually killed the chances of emerging teams to do well. It sucks but that's the reality sadly. But we shouldn't ignore the current problems at all but a lot of perspectives is needed as well.

It sucks but that's the reality sadly. But we shouldn't ignore the current problems at all but a lot of perspectives is needed as well. Money might have killed the European game but not the Asian game Asia has a 3+1 rule that stops teams from buying the league. The best Chinese or Japanese teams in the leagues (and ACL) are those that do the best to work with the available Chinese / Japanese talent So which teams are doing the best with the best available Australian talent? This is the problem with the current structure that I may or may not have mentioned 1000 times As I said, if Liverpool smashed Sydney 3-0 with Sydney not even having a shot on target in 80 minutes like last night, but Sydney were a competitive outfit that truly represented the best Australia has to offer - it would have been admiral. I agree that nobody would have expected Sydney to win. In the same way nobody expects the Socceroos to win the world cup But Sydney weren't just out classed. They were exposed as a watered down product. A team that spent the last 30 weeks running at defences with 1 or 2 good players in a league with an average of 3 goals a game If the best 30 players were in the best 4 teams you'll see a fight for places in the starting line up. You'll also see some context added to the statistics. And only truly the best players will stand out and move on. Not just those in the team whose turn it was to win the title. You will see a true fight and a different grade that rises to the top. Something the NSL managed with a fraction of the resources of the A League Sydney's performance should not be ignored. Neither should the ACL results. Neither should those of the Socceroos

Nice rant Bluebird,if you watch games to see teams compete, then how can you be satisfied with what SFC dished up ? They let their best player and one of their best defenders go on holiday .amd lost their two righ wingers. The rest of the players were insipid.I thought the SFC mantra was to win every contest. Last night it was the opposite. Yes average ACL performances by HAL teams were woeful. So SFC just maintained the status quo.But lets not kid ourselves the SFC performance had anything to do with salary caps. They just didnt compete. What is this bs about sport not being about winning or losing? Are you over medicated? If you want to watch teams look pretty and forget about how to win ,then watch our national youth teams or go to the ballet. I have followed many sports since i was a boy and not once was wondering about betting odds.I wanted the team i supported to win.Sometimes a loss was more palatable if my team played well and just lost. But i always wanted my team to win....If you don't play to win ,then you wont. A League teams might look good in their own league but aren't up to the grade of teams that play competitively? What are you talking about? When Brisbane beat a glamour Chinese team away 2-1 with Tevez amd knocked them out of the ACL,was that not competing? Yes FFA make life very very difficult for HAL teams to compete week in week out with teams outside Australia. But properly prepared with their best players, they can compete.Last night SFC didn't compete and it had nothing to do with winning a Grand Final. They clearly didn't prepare properly ,didn't pick their best players, didn't play to their normal game plan and didn't want to hurt their opponents.
Maybe you are living in a bubble, but Australia doesn't have a day off for a horse race.

Do you think Sydney FC are a good team? Or do you think the teams they were forced to play against this season were bad? Sydney didn't go from being this invincible incredible team to a team that didn't know how to play overnight. Last night was them. No team is ever going to have a full squad or match fitness but that was them Sydney dished up shit because the A League is a non competitive league. It is rigged, balanced, and no consequences for failure. The team that finished third only won 40% of their games. Contrast this to Brisbane's season where CCM and Adelaide matched them most them of the way Sport has upsets. Anybody knows that. Sure Brisbane beat a Chinese team but what did they do in the rest of the league? Did they win the ACL due to their effort against a Chinese team with Tevez? I must have missed that part A League teams are not up to the grade. We know this from the ACL. We know this from the Socceroos. We know this every time a leading stats getter is snapped up by a foreign club, sits on the bench for a year and comes back. Our best strikers don't play week in / week out against 4-5 of the best 20 defenders in the A League. The best players are distributed evenly (even in Sydney FC). The result is weak watered down teams that might look good against one another by comparison By sport isn't about winning or losing what I mean is I don't stop watching my team if they lose. I don't call for games to be cancelled because my team is not up to grade Yes Sydney lost. Yes they were humiliated. But damage to the game? Come on. The only damage to the game is what the FFA continue to do with this stupid balanced model. In a fair fight with Sydney at their best, even with a 3-0 loss and no shot on target for 80 minutes, it would have been respectable due to the gap Nobody expects you to beat Bolt in a race. But they do want to see you run 100m as fast as you can We can both agree Sydney didn't do that. But we will have to disagree on who was to blame

What was on display last night was everything that is wrong with Australian football from u6 to the a league. In the first 10 min Liverpool proved they could of defeated SFC in double figures and had they the consensus of opinion would have been that it was unsportsmanlike. 2 things to be thankful for 1 they did not play the Socceroos 2 I did not pay to go to Sydney and watch that shite
Now get a top 3rd div English team over here and play full on so we can get a true indication of our level

@ krones3
So SFC play like shite and like they can't be bothered and you judge an entire competition on that?
So when Roar ran Liverpool close does that make the A league close to EPL standard?
When Victiry knock over top European opponents what does that mean??
I'll hazard a guess - your a white middle class male, you support a Lower tier English side and still shop at specialist "British outlet" stores despite emigrating here more than a decade ago and nothing here is "quite as good as it was back home". Just a guess.

Hahaha fuck of waz you know me White yes Middle class not sure RUM drinker think that makes me a bogan 1919 rum of choice Liverpool supporter for over 50yrs not exactly lower div. 4 decades ago 10 pound Pom Didn't even know they had British stores not up here Everything better back home? Nup but Football is and Australian Football has gone backwards in the last 5-10 years and the slide is set to continue unless we truly gauge ourselves against a competitor who is willing to give us a true flogging. That game was embarrassing to be true.

It's a hell of a stretch you were making though don't you think. Man City drew 0-0 with Melb City a year back, where does that put the A League?
And Kasmina Antlers finished runners up to Real Madrid in the works club cup, so where does that put the A League seeing as Roar beat Antlers 2-1?
The comparison is a futile one. The HAL is the best competition in Australia, that's it. Granted it doesn't compare to the 4 top leagues in Europe, no argument but after that, who knows?
The only thing about last night was SFC were sh*t and let themselves and the HAL down. But they didn't even try and play the way they did last season.
LFCs first two goals - were pure class, but they wouldn't have scored them that early or that easily if SFC gave a damn last night.
..... Now, off you go and buy some "British sausages" to celebrate 😉

I'm starting to think we have a whining problem in this country, every time we lose a game whether it be an ACL, Socceroo or youth team game and recently a meaningless friendly game lol most people get depressed and talk about blaming the salary cap to curriculum ffa etc. There is no need to overreact!

Don't know what people were expecting, Liverpool are one of the best teams on the planet and would rip to shreds about 99.9999% of football teams in the world.

Bluebird, A full strength SFC playing seriously is a good team and would play a hell,of a lot better than last nights joke of a performance. What is tiring is your hyperbole to support your hate of the salary cap, which a lot of people like me don't like either. Just get serious with your comments.SFC played like crap , well after their last game against a team that mainly had players that only finished their season last weekend(so they were still match fit).SFC were also without their best player ,have already been getting plastered after the GF and looked second rate. That doesnt mean that one game defines the whole HAL when in season. HAL teams at their best can mix it with decent overseas teams. But clearly would struggle if asked to play at a high level for more than a few games, in a row, because of all the FFA constraints imposed on them to equalise the HAL. WSW won the ACL with a team that was no better than SFC is today.Roar ,WSW and AU all had at least one decent win in the ACL.Tou can't fluke wins that often. A lot of the Socceroos have come from the HAL and with their best team can perform on the day as well. The HAL is stagnating ,youth players are not getting game time, clubs are forced to offload players ,their squads are too small, their playing schedule is crazy if playing in the ACL ...etc..etc.. The game last night was of no relevance to any of those issues.

Liverpool fans singing YNWA Beautiful @brisbane its on abc Beautiful YNWA peformance! ❤️ True passion Liverpool 3-1 sydney GOAL!!! STURRIDGE!!!!!!!!!! WHAT A STRIKE ANND PLAY! THATS THE DIFFERENCE WHAT A TWIST AND TURN AND SHOT. WORLD CLASS. THE SPEED OF IT ALL Agree with the commentator The quality of the plays from liverpool is so much more faster than the what the a-league players play with And this is a second team with plsyers who have come out of retirement Holly crap i cant spot a sudney fc shirt in the crowd Just goes to show perhaps how much Australians prefer to follow and watch the epl rather than the A-league @fancy Tirggered sydney fc fans? Bro thats not excatly an epl starting team Its a second team with players who have come out of retirement Liverpool absolutely bossing the A-league champions What a fucking drop meg against Zullo by firmnho Ahahhha sydney 3-0 Really shows you the quality of sydney compared to the rest of the world Sturridge is an absolute boss Zullo sit down. Australian club football have already been embarrassed in the acl man Karius's hair is so good Ohhh my Carragher looks like his eaten to much pies @redkat Anyone who knows football would have said that if sydney won it would have been impressive because the liverpool team is still a strong team even if its not the first team. Its just that liverpool have such a world class team that their second team filled with youth and legends is still good Penalty on geggard? Poor decision should have been one? 3-0 half time Wow @wsf Nice bs Theese presenters..... please stop Sturridge must start for liverpool next season Why hasnt he started @maxxie Yeah dammmmmm The hell? The presenters or commentators right now is kinda cringe and weird Really makes u miss the sbs presenters. Embarrasing See ya im out @city sam Why should i leave Got a problem? @city i dont post constant nonsense Just cause i tell the hard truth and i aay things u dont like doesnt mean its nonsense @george Not really im just saying what i feel Like commenting what a great play it was from sturridge and how i would like for him to be a regular I havent said anything thats not unreladed to the post or thats not true Whats wrong with me saying 1-0! Or what a goal or firmhno is a gun etc. Your 31 posts in this thread, for anyone who would like to lose several million brain cells by reading over them. For those who don't here's a break down. - 14 posts with 5 words or less (several 3 words posts included) - 2 posts telling everyone how much you were feeling YNWA
- 5 posts on how good you think Sturridge is - a post on Karius hair - 2 posts calling Steven Gerrard - geggard - use of the term ' fucking drop meg' - a post informing us all that it wasn't LFC starting team - a post educating everyone that LFC's second team is still better than SFC. - 4 posts educating us all on the fact that the EPL is superior to the HAL
- 4 posts about the broadcast (perhaps this can be excused given how atrocious it was) - A post telling everyone you were leaving - (after not leaving) a post asking why you should leave? - 2 posts arguing that you don't post nonsense.
Others are much better at tolerating your spam, perhaps I need to try and just gloss over and ignore your constant verbal diarrhoea. I do, in a odd way find your stupidity a little entertaining.

There are so many grammatical errors it makes it incoherent and requires you to decipher the meaning.

Playing overseas teams in preseason makes sense. But playing after the season has ended is a complete waste of time. You can't learn much from playing with hangovers in a makeshift team that want to go on holiday. So let npl teams or youth teams play if it is straight after the regular season or just forget it.

Yeah agree with this , at least having it sceduled in the pre season makes it a bit more meaningful as both parties have the incentive to play as part of conditioning and fine tuning etc

Really enjoyed the game.
Liverpool appeared to exert considerable off the ball pressure in the first half.
I actually enjoyed a quality team at a different level being able to play through what seemed like an impregnable SFC defence for most of the HAL season. Liverpool also capitalised on minor SFC mistakes much more than HAL opposition.
