40K to a friendly match against an EPL side and to be honest I have seen no coverage for this match at all, not even highlights on FTA.

It might be because I live in Melbourne however I find it odd that the media opposes football so much. I wonder why?

If football had media support it would become the number one game in Australia I know that is a bold statement from me but I believe it to be true.

Football has survived in Australia for almost 60 years with little media support, much disappointment at national level ie. 1997.

I don’t understand why the mainstream media don’t give it a chance?

Why didn’t the FFA advertise the game? Is club football not as strong as we believe or is there high powers at play?

I’m Puzzled the fact that most of the FFA is made of ex-ruby administrative stuff scares me and perhaps Fozz is right when he says there needs to be far more football people involved.

Something has to change I think we are slowly getting the balance right but I still think we could be doing better don’t you?

I really dont think the FFA have much to do with out of season friendlies, apart from sanctioning the use of SFC brand name etc... Other people are to balme for lack of advertising. The promoter, and the stadium itself would be the ones to look at.

The media are giving people what they're interested. There may have been 40k to see Everton, but there were another 100k odd each watching rugby and AFL this weekend.

Journalists cover what they know, and most football journalists, in print, TV and online, would be in SA right now.
The sad fact is there is also an element that will oppose football simply for their own professional survival. They don't know the game, how to cover it, who the key people are. If their employer decided to run more football stories, they’d be asking someone other than the now unemployed journo.

um because it was a preseason friendly maybe? There is no anti-football media the idea is in your head, there are specialized sports journo who might take potshots but if it rates regardless of what it is, it will get airtime.

I would venture that the SFS will be at capacity for the 3 days of the Festival of Football in a couple of weeks. Will Emerton play for Blackburn?

You are deluded and there is no legitimate reason why you should be on this forum as you certainly aren't a friend of football choosing to dispute everything

There is many hundreds of millions of dollars at stake here.The established media has vested interests which are hard to breakdown when prohibitive broadcasting deals are put in place

In Australia there is very little positive in mainstream media written about football, most of the times not even all goals from a match are shown (Uruguay V Germany 2:3; Germany v Argentina 4:0 ...)high scoring games and chenal 7,9,10 very little reporting, than Australian qualifiers for exsample,very littel compared with cricket Pura Cup hardly anyone in the stands, even Rugby League games get less crowds than Sydney FC. I just saw Rebecca Wilson on The Morning Show and she was very positive about the game, talking about how 0-0 draws aren't always boring and the final was very exciting etc.

I think the Media is changing slowly because football is growing and they know they have to adapt. However I still pick up a paper or read and anti-football article saying how 'Wog ball has no place in Australia' or how the 'World cup bid is bad for Australia' etc

However i think the General coverage of football is still pretty hidden maybe there is no bias against it however there certainly needs to be an improvement.

40K for a friendly is worth a mention dont you think ?

You were given the opportunity to present a case in the other topic but came up blank why you continuing in this topic?

Pura cup doesnt get any coverage what are you on about? Rugby league has huge interest it is a television sport not a spectator sport, their crowds arent relevant. If it rates it will get airtime just like the socceroos get good coverage while other areas of the game get comparatively poor coverage such as a-league and overseas teams because they don’t rate as high.

Rubbish Mr Football, this is clearly not true. Channel 7 admitted under oath to trying to kill Soccer in this country.

No they didnt. You're so immersed in the game you're unable to step back and look at it logically. You had one comment from an executive that was off the cuff trying to support their case in court. Based on what i've been told the NSL was originally shown at reasonable times, but did not rate and was then moved to later slot.

Anyone who lives in Melbourne and reads the Herald Sun or The Age, sans Michael Lynch and some, or watches local news, will realise how under represented the game is.

The Herald is constantly full of soccer [sic] bashing, last week saw the most biased, derogatory, xenophobic and un-educated piece of filth published against our game in an opinion piece by Neil Mitchell.

Apart from the World Cup, we're lucky to get the results of matches, there is no specialised reporting apart from being squeezed between the rowing and state hockey, with less column space than the local amateur Aussie Rules league.

I'm totally with davstar on this, we didn't even get a score update, which would have been nice.

There is a difference between what you're saying and what the OP is suggesting, which was that there is a campaign against the game. I think its more about interest levels which is why we need to have more broad based teams at all levels of the game to generate community support and we also need to get the a-league on free to air to sell the clubs to the mainstream.

Currently we have traditional supporters plus foxtel viewers which is only 20-30% of Australians max getting a view of our top league which results in less interest and less coverage in the general media.

Because they are employed by media companies that have big money invested in sustaining the success of the competing codes.

You can believe that but its based on not a hell of a lot. The Socceroos show that if it rates it will get coverage over other sports. In comparison the a-league clubs have far less awareness, the OP is just overrating the appeal of a friendly game, it not the media’s job to promote them for us we have to do it ourselves.

You don't find it intriguing that there were allegations of corruption, subsequently proven to be false by the FFA, Australian Government and FIFA, made against our World Cup bid and published during the World Cup by Fairfax journalists?

You also don't believe the timing of this was designed to cause maximum damage to our bid with the whole world focused on the World Cup?

Have they proven to be false? The journo's involved are quite well respected arent they, with no previous record of bias or agenda?

No doubt the timing was designed for maximum publicity, which is slightly different.

I think people are getting paranoid if they actually believe the media are deliberately ignoring football in order to make the sport fail in Australia.

It's just journalists catering to what they believe will sell newspapers or get advertisement dollars.

Random question: which do you think got more coverage when you compare them, Cahill and Everton or Beckham and Galaxy?
