How much Asian political and business pull would a team from Canberra bring?
Only asking because of the obvious.
Someone with Asian business interests might be able to generate some growth.

Just putting it out there.

BTW, Capital football are keeping last years ACTAS squad together so as to create a pathway for these players gaining a A-League youth contract.
Games have been organised for this group (96-97) to play games against, SFC, WSW, CCM and NJ.

Expansion is so important there should be a dedicated staff member for this purpose. The FFA need to produce a 20 year road-map for the A-League, and begin to target areas indicated in the road-map for future capital works and government investment.

Not sure if this has come up in the thread yet, but Phoenix are playing Glory in Auckland in February, at Eden Park. They drew 20k last time so this could give us something to talk about re a new Auckland team, and where they can play.

if we have a 20 team competition with 17 australian teams and 3 kiwi, i think we should be alright cos the afc will view us as a 17 team comp which is still huge in my opinion. id be happy with it

That's my point. Obviously we'll all be dead by the end of 100 years, but to have a definite roadmap and goals for the future rather than stumbling from broadcast deal to broadcast deal, shedding the odd team, is definitely the way forward. Just some vision, really.

its so easy to have a 100 year road map with their 120k population on country a size of the UK. they benefit cos they are in a small country so they can spend less and save more. we dont have that luxury here and we are operating on a shoe string budget

First, they announced the J. League Hundred Year Vision, in which they aim to make 100 professional association football clubs in the nation of Japan by 2092, the hundredth season. The league also encouraged the clubs to promote football or non-football related sports and health activities, to acquire local sponsorships, and to build good relationship with their hometowns at the grass-root level. The league believed that this will allow the clubs to bond with their respective cities and towns and get support from local government, companies, and citizens. In other words, clubs will be able to rely on the locals, rather than major national sponsors

The second change made that year was forming the J2, incidentally.

I don't know why we don't turn the NYL into a 20 team league (2 conferences) and open up new markets that way, or lay groundwork for a HAL side down the track. Wouldn't cost a great deal to run an U21 side. Potential locations:

Gold Coast, Townsville, Cairns, Sunshine Coast, NSW North Coast, Wollongong/South Coast, Canberra, Albury/Wodonga, Geelong, Hobart, Launceston, Darwin amongst others would be great candidates.

Might cost up to half a mill per team, that's $10 mill per annum, fair chunk of the $37 mill per annum TV deal.

im pretty sure lots of ppl have thrown up that idea. And it can work.

Existing NYL teams + 4 real potential expansion spots. South coast, fury, darwin, tas united. It's a good way to test the area and create identities that can build long term.
Another option is w-league teams aswell.

Canberra have had a very successful and well-supported W-league team for 4 years, it's time at the very least they get a NYL side. How hard would it be to rebadge the current AIS side into Canberra United? They can still get the same players, and play at the same time as the W-league side as the same club to get a bit of support going, see where that goes. They could play friendlies against local sides and even full A-league sides pre-season to make a full season of it. Can't believe something like this still hasn't happened.

AIS is already in the youth league and is represented by players deemed to be the best in their age group from all over Australia according to AIS selection policy. Canberra need a youth team with players that are from Canberra to help the development of these players.:d

Think about it... Take as much time as you need...

I meant, instead of having them as AIS competing, why couldn't we have the exact same thing except they play as Canberra United, wear a green jersey and play games before or after the W-league side? Would help both the womens' get extra crowds, and the mens' to start building toward A-league inclusion for next TV rights deal.

If you pick one of your weaker markets and offer it to Red Bull, then the team would be sustainable for the long, long term. Would suit somewhere like the Gold Coast or even a real weak market like Darwin (provided they have enough community engagement)

Right, and what I'm saying is, why is it not possible to get rid of AIS then, and start a NYL team representing Canberra? Why could you not use the AIS players in said Canberra team? What possible problem would there be then...

You don't get it do you ](*,) . Ais is not a team representing Canberra. Canberra players need a pathway. Think about what your saying instead of being condescending, thanks.

Right, and what I'm saying is, why is it not possible to get rid of AIS then, and start a NYL team representing Canberra? Why could you not use the AIS players in said Canberra team? What possible problem would there be then...

+1 makes sense to me.

Because then you would not be developing Canberra players. It would just be a name change from AIS to Canberra United.
