@LFC

It’s rather depressing that SFC give free membership to kids and yet draw such low crowds. As an initiative, this is seen as something that will grow Roar crowds but maybe not if SFC are anything to go by.

The 20,000 emails are going out to junior registered players in the football Brisbane region. So basically an attempt to connect grassroots with Roar which I think is slightly different to SFC?

Why depressed.
Should be used to it mate - need to condition yourself a little more.
This is how it is in our country, football sturggles to get good crowds overall in general over the years but it has improved a little.
All I see is afl having good grounds but that mainly south and west borders.
Union is backwards, nrl is trying hard to hang in there but its decreasing from way back so what do you expect.
Marketing is shit, not that that guarantees crowd improvement but gets it in the face so to speak.
Your Roar e 3 free game membership is nothing much but something I guess.
Ofcourse the SFC is to ALL grassroots grounds in their catchment.
Your a one team town so you should get a spike for a mo but pretty piss poor just 3games.
Should be all home games - enhances more families attending hopefully.
I see plenty fams at SFC games.
We avg 10-14k crowds - in a proper suitable stadium this would look good. Allianz is too large but for derbies and mv games.
Just because were the largest city doesn't mean were going to get 30k every game, other states crap on too much about this.
Were 3rd down the list in the sport que, sydney is a bitch to move around, people have countless other things to do football is not no1 here to those average type supporters.
This is life here.
Till the game can stand up and deliver a better package overall then we might see people take more notice, get far better media coverage instead of 5pages further back in the sport section and so on and on and on and on.

Fair enough. Whilst in theory the Roar initiative is a good one it can only be one part of the answer. Same with Sydney.

A much improved performance against Jets, hard to tell who was the top 2 side and who is struggling to be honest. Forgetting the refereeing and VAR shit which is just what it is now, it’s like the weather - something to be overcome but not worth complaining about.

In the first half we were wasteful - two free headers and two one-on-ones excellently created by Maccarone. FBKs was a bit harder but Holman should have rounded the keeper and scored. If we’re going to be that wasteful we don’t deserve to win.

Ricky should have buried his chance instead he bought in to our “just one more pass” disease and the fairytale went begging.

Once Holman, then Maccarone went off all hope was lost. Gameiro just goes through the motions and (understandably) the thing going through his mind is not to do anything where he could get injured.

The goal came through the middle again, as it did v City, loads of space in the middle and bang. Another defeat.

I’m at the stage where I feel sorry for JA, the anger stage has passed, it’s now like watching someone in any job anywhere in the world, where everyone else can see they haven’t got the skills to do the job and everyone’s hoping they’ll work it out for themselves before the inevitable happens

Honestly think Ricky made the right decision to pass, he just shouldn't have taken a touch before he did.

In the stadium I definitely thought he should have shot and done it early but on the tv replay you can see what he was trying to do and a decent cross was a 99% certain goal.

The extra touch thing summed Roar up. There wasn’t much between the two sides and it was an entertaining game with good football. But where Roar often took an extra touch Jets didn’t and that showed with a little more freedom resulting in a higher shots on goal count.

At least we made a record for the oldest team in HAL history.
The only problem was we were always going to be legless as the game went on and so it proved with the goal to our ex youth player.
The once mighty Roar who played the dominating game and used to finish over teams in the heat now reduced to a poor mans SFC,playing on the counterattack. But not quite having the legs to do it properly
I thought we would score at least one goal, but that the Jets would score more.So kudos to our defence or should i say Young.. We beat our average goals against.
Kudos also to Henrique for looking as good as any other Roar player despite not playing for eons.Henrique showed he still knows how to circulate the ball ,without stopping to look for players and passing backward and he still can make intelligent runs.Is it a case of he still remembers how we used to play?

FBK, Holman, Avraam and Franjic all had guilt-edge chances in the first half and should have all scored. Missing chances is not unusual but missing four quality ones is unforgivable. But let’s blame the VAR is Aloisi’s response ...

To be fair he criticized the linesman (and quite rightly) ...he was hopeless ...but he did also say that we should have won regardless if we had taken our chances. ..and he was correct there too. I still think JA is not an A-League quality coach....but it appears we are stuck with him for anther season...so we need to suck it up for a while and see if he can rise above his inadequacies and improve things next year. If not ...his coaching career is finished here.
The one thing about him that baffles me is why some players and ex players (Meredith and FBK ) say he is a superb coach ? What are they seeing that we are not ?

To be fair I haven’t seen any post match interview stuff just the headline stories which have all focussed on VAR.

I think we do have him, at least for the start of next season, a little longer but like you I don’t know what people see. Personally Meredith is just regurgitating stuff that others have told him and FBK, well we know he’s like one more year on contract with Roar which he’s unlikely to get with a new coach.

JA can be reasonably satisfied with that performance, Roar/Jets looked comparable but it shouldn’t be enough to save him.

it was an exciting game for the non-aligned...but ultimately frustrating for a Roar fan.It didn't help having an ex Roar youth player score a classy goal against us .
it seems to me we are playing a sit back and defend and then counterattack style. Ok ....it is a legitimate style (Sydney do it well)...but when we counter ..we need to go on with it and drive towards goal before the opposition tries to scurry back . Sometimes we do this and it works well.... but so often we attack and then stop and turn the ball backwards ...all momentum is lost and their defence resets in front of us ...moment gone .
I would rather see us take a man on and have a shot ..even if it is a wild one ...than watch the ball be recycled backwards again.
First half we played this well..and early second half....then we ran out of puff.
We have the wrong players to sustain this system of play....but there is no plan B when it stops working .
Our old players are good for 60 minutes tops but after that we have no real talented youngsters to come in and takeover....that is our downfall.

@ miron

I think you describe the confusion in styles perfectly - away from home is better because you can sit back and defend; at home they have to come out and take the game more.

FBK and Holman are mutually exclusive imo, play one but not both, and never play either of them on the wing - both at 10 playing off Maccarone who regularly creates chances.

First game back with Roar and was probably in two minds, you could see the pass was there but it should have come sooner. He really should have taken the shot but if he missed it he would have probably got shit for not passing, dammed either way to be honest.

Sorry to disappoint you but he said “coach Brisbane Roar”, he said it on the pitch during the pregame show.

So Marco goes and writes a story up and it becomes “a Brisbane side” .... it’s almost like Marco is, wait for it, ex-Brisbane City or something ... oh wait, he is 😂

First real rumour of possible new signings:

O’Doherty might, dare I say it, be too young. Unless he’s a squad filler?

I struggled to watch most of Brisbane games this season let alone other teams so I don't really know if O''Doherty is good potential signing  but 20 years old and winger sounds good to me, I miss Borrello.

I'm more interested in the necessary "clean out" if it happens before I start getting any sort of hope for next season.

I’ve seen him a few times and wouldn’t say he’s a bad signing, I somehow doubt AU will let him go lightly which means we’ll over pay if we get him.

Is he any better thanLeck ? Not sure tbh but at least he will bring down the ave age

I think O'Doherty is very raw but has talent and a high ceiling. If he can get consistent football and iron out is tendency to get frustrated easily he could be very good.

I wouldn’t mind him as a signing but he’s not going to make or break next season. It’s the big names that will do that.

If a 36 year old FBK gets re-signed we know we’re in the shit, TK is also 36 and here next season and we can’t afford to blow visa spots just because they’re cheap and at the end of their career.

(The signing of a 34 year old TK for two years and not one shows the mistakes being made at this club, if he’d been signed for one year he’d be leaving this winter).

Maccarone and FBK have to move on, Eric and TK occupy two visa spots with three possible signings all of which have to be top quality.

The club signed old timers and have been very poor making the argument that they should have played youngsters and developed this season and then it would have been easier to cop losses.

Looking at the age of the Roar's senior players, they're going to have a wicked offseason recruitment wise to avoid another terrible season next time around, particularly if Jamie Young decides to chase money (who would blame him, he's been terrific).

it’s not the age of the squad that’s been the problem, Aloisi has just tried to copy Sydney on that.

Young players are fine, but they leave as soon as they show promise - remember Yaboa, Maclaren, Borrello, Petratos to name a few meanwhile Broich at 35 was still our best player.

Aloisi stuffed this season by having unfit players (I don’t mean injured, I mean just not fit enough), experimenting with a stupid back 3 formation, playing favourites with selection (eg Theo over Young), and not having a clear game plan (are we 3-4-2-1 or 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1?)

It’s a coaching shambles.

Hard to disagree with that. Ask Aloisi though and it's always the ref's fault haha.

All clubs lose promising players, it just appears that Brisbane has started going for players looking for one last paycheck rather than older, experienced players that actually add something.
