I think it surprised people though because Rudd is usually so damn slick when he is speaking publicly.

What election are we talking about? Federal. So State Governments have nothing to do with this discussion.

...i would have to say that Labor's record is no better...however i digress......

i would argue that when the ALP are in power these utilities get loaded up with union power and the get heavier and heavier with more and more people required to achieve the same result and that's where the privatising drive comes from because productivity dives in the arse......

i mentioned Bobby Carr trying to sell off the electricity utility in NSW wales some time ago....they also deregulated the industry at the same time...the end result was that at that time deaths in the industry Australia wide were running at around 12-13 a year....after the deregulation the deaths have increased to 4 times that level.....

when Carr was preparing the utility for sale he sacked large numbers of inspectors,linesmen,high voltage workers and turner off all of the maintenance to make the utility more attractive on paper for the sale......so what resulted was a massive accumulation of works required to get the network...(poles & wires & transformers) back up to the level prior to the sale attempt.... he failed to sell the utility..........so after this government who came after Carr were left with huge problems getting the network back up to scratch.....

so what is required is balance.....yes i know stupid batfink rants about balance all the time...but i run my life and my business on the KISS method....Keep It Simple Stupid......

I hate all sales of public assets to private corporations, it destroys the capability of the Government to secure vital infrastructure, to ensure said infrastructure isn't left to rot in the ground by profit driven private corporations, and to build and expand in areas that do not deliver what a private company would consider appropriate returns.

Also, Anna Bligh & Bob Carr don't have anything to do with selling Federal Government assets.

Labor might send everything to shit according to you, although this Government managed to get us through the GFC unscathed, unlike all the countries using the Liberals preferred policy of austerity, but at least they aren't selling the assets that can make money and/or provide services to the nation.



Like I said, I hate PPP's on new infrastructure and the selling of existing infrastructure.

It does bounce both ways, but the Liberal Government have the track record in this area and it's a very poor one, both in terms of outcomes achieved through sell-offs (EG Completely fucking up the Telstra sale), and in terms of what was gained through the same (EG: Selling our gold at rock bottom prices, or giving up the massive monopoly profits that owning our Airports gave the Government).

Agreed. Private Public partnerships just make things far more expensive as the government pays millions (potentially billions) of dollars extra in interest repayments to their private partners. This debate is going on right now in Victoria where the state government is putting all other infrastructure projects on hold for basically a decade while they go ahead with the eastern link to Flemington (hardly the west). Spending billions of dollars on a road that less than twenty percent of Eastern Freeway drivers would use is a huge waste of money and PPP would just make that worse.

as far as utilities making money...IF the State Labor party had of built the roads for themselves they would be raking in $350 million a year in NSW, and the resident of sydney would be paying tolls fot a long time less or the very least for reinvestment in further projects....so in bounces both ways MAC

Imagine how much all the gold Costello sold for rock bottom prices would be worth now.

Or how much Telstra would be making for the Government having already built a FTTN network in early 2000 followed by an NBN style FTTP, out of general revenue, if Howard had structurally seperated the wholesale and retail aspects of Telstra instead of fucking it up badly.

Or how much all the airports they sold would be raking in right now.
