Borrello has a much higher roof than Maclaren to reach for with his ability. always knew he would do well.

Borrello was a striker back in. the day when I first watched him for the young Socceroos. He is an outstanding winger as seen at the Roar and now FCK. But it would be awesome to see him lead the line. imo he has the right build and skill set for it.

Its got nothing to do with tall poppy syndrome he's not a super talent like say like Arzani where he seems to stand out quite quickly, whilst , onn that you can't compare him to Firmino both are completely different strikers.

I've got nothing against him personally with MacLaren but it seems he doesn't have a limited skill set and relies a lot on making that run in behind and to finish off the chances alot like Taggart, hes hold up play and ability to link up play is quite poor which is important to have as an modern No.9 maybe that's why he hasn't done well in Germany?

Juric has those things, but hes finishing is not good enough when it all counts.

Although i think MacLaren is more suited to the British game.

I agree with this a lot. His goal scoring at the Roar seemed to be almost solely confined to speed and being in the right place to put the ball in the net. Whilst a skill in itself and a highly commendable one, like you say, there are other elements of a number 9. It might be biased in all but look at what someone like Harry Kane can do, and even Hazard, Sanchez or Lukaku.

They're more than just players waiting for tap ins. Kane can score from inside and outside the box, with both feet and his head. McLarens skill set wouldn't be effective against a lot of opponents.

It's not tall poppy syndrome, just more of an assessment of his current limitations as a player.

people on here digging it into maclaren while he is down.  tall poppy syndrome.

he just needs game time. he's a great striker and we should be hoping he gets on the pitch and starts knocking them in. because he can.  because he has.

he's more like firmino than a typical striker. how many top level teams would firmino fit into as a 9??  there's a good chance that he would be fighting to get in the 11 at most top level clubs.  but you put firmino into liverpool under klopp and he is part of one of the most dangerous front 3 since neymar left barca.

maclaren needs to play in a team with the front 3 on the front foot. he cannot be lone man in the other half of the pitch.  he needs to be in an aggressive attacking team.

If we are relying on MacLaren and Juric as our saviours for the lack of striker quality then i would not be holding my breath.

Geez yeah, we are struggling for players to "look up to" if Maclaren cops it from tall poppy syndrome.

Either way I just hope he stays in Scotland and finds his feet and his level.
If he moves on after another 6 months of patchy form/game time he will be back in the a-league soon after that playing for Victory (and will probably do well).

Not really tall poppy syndrome if he hasn't actually achieved anything outside the A-League...more like average height poppy syndrome where Maclaren is concerned atm.

But at least he is in Europe having a go, I hope he can find his niche at club level over there and start banging in the goals .

But Firmino is one of the most all round strikers in the world, while Maclaren is the definition of a limited striker with average finishing. A better example of what you are trying to say would be Juric who is actually good off the ball even if he is shit at finishing.

firmino can finish though and can shoot, trap a ball, turn, hold up players, Maclaren is a tapin expert just like McDonald was..

actually very few of his goals in the a league were tap ins. Around a quarter of his goals in open play were tap ins

In my defence, I was digging into him when he was in his A league prime as well.
His stats, aside from goals were always dreadful. He barely contributed aside from goals on the counter.

he is a good finisher who doesnt have a large backswing

its a pretty basic skill for many countries but we don't have many players who can do what he can do even if he doesnt have many other strings to his bow

Although both are different players with Borrello a better all round attacker its a not surprise that he's doing well in Germany, i always felt MacLaren is quite predictable in how he plays, he has a limited skill set which doesn't help him at all.

But the media give MacLaren the bigger wraps when we know Borrello has the bigger potential.

‘Has the Maloney look about him’ – Celtic fans react after club agree to sign explosive attacker

Featured Image
By Richard Parks

Celtic fans have taken to Twitter to express their delight after the club signed Australian winger Leo Mazis from Canberra’s National Premier League club Belconnen United.

The Scottish giants revealed on their official academy Twitter account on Tuesday night that they have completed the purchase of the teenage attacker, who is aged 17.

Mazis has agreed terms to follow Tom Rogic’s steps and leave the semi-professional club in Canberra to move to the Scottish giants.

LEO MAZIS Everyone in the Academy is delighted at the completion of the signing of 17year old Leo from Belconnen United, Canberra, Australia.

Midfielder Leo hopes to follow in the footsteps of former Belconnen player, Tom Rogic. ???? pic.twitter.com/zzD34MURZC

— Celtic FC Academy (@CelticFCAcademy) February 20, 2018

It has been previously reported that Celtic had offered Mazis a three-year contract but that has not been confirmed by the club.

Celtic fans have taken to social media to hail the arrival of the young attacker, who was pictured at his unveiling with Celtic youth-team coach Shaun Maloney.

A number of supporters expressed their hope that Mazis can make the same impact at Parkhead as ex-winger Maloney, who had two successful spells at Celtic from 2001 to 2007 and 2008 to 2011.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Celtic signing up Leo Mazis & Liam Hughes as hopefully regular senior squad players in the future is great news all round. Great stuff ????????

— Player One (@retrobotik) February 20, 2018

He has the maloney look about him..hope he as good as that wee guy????????

— Jose(golfnut67) (@JGolfnut67) February 20, 2018

Welcome to the Celtic family ????

— Ellen Dickson (@67Dixie) February 20, 2018

Welcome to Paradise Leo, you have signed for the best team world ( on and off the pitch) Enjoy your football & know you are always appreciated????????????????Hail Hail????????

— Themis (@Themis1888) February 17, 2018

Good luck Leo! ????✌

— Stephen Knox (@sknox7) February 17, 2018

Congratulations Leo. Another top Oz joins the Hoops

— Jim Cunningham (@JimCunningham4) February 17, 2018

Good luck, Leo. You can learn a lot from Shaun Maloney, his attitude was great & what a player he was…heart of a lion

— Joe???? (@celticjoe86) February 17, 2018

Football Insider verdict:

Celtic have previous when it comes to snapping up golden Aussie talent. Rogic joined from Central Coast Mariners after a spell at Mazis’ previous club Belconnen and has made a huge impact at Parkhead. If Mazi, who is renowned for his explosive pace, can follow in the imperious footsteps of his countryman and blaze a trail in to the first team, it could be a spectacular deal for the Hoops, who had a good look at the youngster during his November trial.

In other Celtic transfer news, the plug has been pulled at the last minute on the Hoops loaning a left-sided player.

borello's performance is very promisinghe was actually average, albeit promising, in the a league so to perform this well in the buli means he has probably improved as a player
I don’t think football is such a linear thing as you’re making it sound.I’m sure he improved in the past 6 months, but a larger part of it is just being the type of player who’s skills translate better to a higher level without depending on shittier slower opposition. He didn’t have huge weaknesses that are exposed at a higher level.I.e. Maclaren who was a bit of a one trick pony, who’s trick doesn’t work against an organised defence.

His last 6 months in the A-league were very good, he was very dynamic and started turning his potential into ability. iirc quite a few roar fans were saying that he was more promising than Maclaren by the time they left.

What's actually impressive about him is his team mates aren't scared to pass to him. Whereby, other Australian nationals in the past they've been a little hesitant to trust them with the ball. They just feed him with no hesitation whatsoever. He also transitions from attack and defense smoothly. I would say positionaly he is doing exactly what is asked of him.

Wright starting.

2:0 Kaiserslautern. Borello reacts quickly to thread the ball forward for his teammate to cross hard for another to slot it in. Good play by all.

Some of his interplay, passing was unbelievable. Another level. No wonder he's starting.
Scored that first goal ? wow. I rolled over and saw they scored but never knew it was him.
He's kicking ass, looks a different player playing 'real football' in a real league.
