Epic;p what is the far west team?

That's just the Coat of Arms of Penrith City Council.

I figured in this little fantasy "Penrith City" would base their logo off it, nice and traditional ;)

Seriously though I have done another one like what you asked for, but aside from a South East team and Geelong, teams in Melbourne (Victory, Heart and South) really wouldn't be representing any geographical area, but that's just how Melbourne is as a city.

Would Victory as centre, work with a south east and north west team?

Basically you'll see that Melbourne is a lot more centralised, the only part of Metropolitan Melbourne you could split off with discreet geographical representation might be the South-East as that expands the furthest, but even that is a push. For example, all the AFL teams may carry the names of 19th century suburbs but they all play out of two stadiums in the city now, MCG and Ethihad.

You'd find the best way to introduce new teams is by other points of difference than geography, such as South Melbourne if it really does have sufficient Greek backing, or Heart with its.... being red? How about Collingwood future-proof themselves and enter a team? Wouldn't even be the first time they've done it.

Any NEW victorian team wanting to take advantage of suburbia would need to base itself from dandenong outwards, targeting new suburbs of cranbourne, casey and berwick. Dandenong is set to become our second cbd like parra in sydney and so would make sense, otherwise geelong is the go for new start ups

to be honest, Your more likely to have a Darwin team in 40 years time than a Hobart team and heres why...

Despite Darwins population of 150,000 Darwins population is rapidly growing. Hobart has been the same in the last 20 years.

I think Canberra is the next logical choice, followed by either Sunshine Coast or North Queensland, then a third Sydney team (Wollongong).

NO reason that teams in Melbourne couldn't represent areas despite all playing centrally.

For example - if you live in the eastern suburbs and have a choice between Heart and Victory - there's no particular reason to pick one over the other. However, if Victory represented Melbourne East, and Heart was the West, there would be a much more direct reason to follow one team... This in turn creates an identity for a club.

Fine to have a centrally based team like Victory in first - but subsequent teams should be (or have been) based geographically. Heart were originally proposed as a South East corridor team to be based in Casey - they could have represented that wedge of the city very effectively.

Wollongong is 95km from Sydney. I couldn't imagine anyone thinking Geelong was part of Melbourne or the Gold Coast was part of Brisbane and they are closer than Wollongong is to Sydney. Wollongong is the CBD of the Illawarra Region which has a population of 460k.

Point well made, but if you put it that way then Heart "represents" the North-East, having their training and admin based in Bundoora and publicly stating they'd like to unearth youngsters from the North-East. But without playing at least some games in a geographical area you represent, it's all a little tenuous, isn't it? And in any case, unlike perhaps the South-East, what does the North-East represent culturally that's different from other areas of Melbourne?

Glory of course, and A2-League for the other two, Peel Coast providing a club for a separate geographical area and Joondalup with likely poor crowds but a proven development machine, would only get better with access to national competition.

The issue is that whilst they are based in the north-east they have not made any effort to represent themselves as being the north-east team - so it isn't a marketing point. No reason for anyone in the area to feel any allegiance to them, if they themselves are not claiming any allegiance to the area.

After going to AUFC financial members meeting last night if we continue to have to rely on owners dipping into there own pockets all the time then I honestly don't think we will ever get beyond 12 teams. Unless clubs start to find ways to become self sufficent and finanicially sound this will always be the case.

There is however no reason why these potential expansion teams can't start in the local league competition however.

what i think/would like to see happen:
2016/17 12 teams: 33 rounds play every team 3x
2018/19 14 teams: 30 rounds, play every team 2x +play 4 opposition a 3rd time (including all the derbies a 3rd time round just like they do in the afl)
2022/23 16 teams: 30 rounds play every team 2x and there we have a beautiful 16 team competition with an 8 team finals system featuring (all present + canberra, wollongong, tasmania, geelong, auckland, northern fury) just in the time to watch the qatari summer sweatathon
