The next phase of expansion will undoubtably be in Sydney and Melbourne, then (huge maybe) Brisbane. There really isn't two ways about this, FFA aren't going to go to a place where there should be a franchise etc, Foxtel will dictate where they can increase subscribers and that's where we'll go!

More Sydney and Melbourne based derbys = more money from foxtel = more money for marquees = more money from foxtel....

this. in my opinion the next 4 clubs should all be sydney, melbourne or brisbane.

Yep correct. My thoughts exactly. 2 from sydney, 1 from melbourne and 1 from brisbane. Then if/when they went to 16 i would bring in 1 more melbourne and then either a second adelaide or canberra/tassie.

The problem with Northern Fury is Townsville's climate

townsville and cairns could never work as long as a-league is played during summer. the number of cyclonic rainy days had its toll on the crowd numbers

thats probably the most sensible approach.
But would it be best advised to go with start-up franchises? Or engage some old nsl clubs to look at joining?
Your south Melbourne's brisbane strikers etc etc

football innit.

Look out tomorrow for my one on one with David Gallop. Talking point is that there are no plans for AL expansion at this stage.

Hopefully "at this stage" is merely a vague way of referring to the next 2 seasons. It really needs to expand beyond that. I'm all for consolidation of the current clubs, but I think there's more to lose right now by taking no action.

In reality no action can be taken re expansion until the FFA gets the extra income it needs to do it.

The FFA's Strategic Plan for 2015-19 is supposed to be coming out soon. I'm hoping that will have some clearer indication of timeframes etc but I suppose that will have to go to the new Board for approval so you are probably correct in that it will be more of the same at this stage.

It seems strange to me to start talking about expansion of the league at a time when those who run the league want to sabotage one of the clubs already in the competition. Add to this the rational to only split markets up that are already covered by clubs and it is pointless to expand to 12 or 14 clubs in this environment as it fails to really add the greater footballing community of Australia to the equation.

Like seriously, third Sydney team and second Brisbane team look like the mostly likely additions to the league based on the current direction the FFA seems to want to take. For those of us in any area outside of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane we can just forget about a club anytime soon or even in the medium term.

When you throw in the whole destroying of clubs I don't believe the FFA is meeting their own mission statement requirement in point three:

"building a very inclusive, mutually valuable relationship between FFA and the Australian Football Community;"

Interesting that Athletic has never been used in our national league.

Gallop is certainly careful with his words. Swapping the Nix with another club isn't expansion - it's making a replacement.

but to tell all club bosses there will be no expansion (all clubs assume that means no more teams) then to kick out an existing club for a new one seems a bit harsh and intentionally deceitful from the FFA.

SW Sydney for the HAL! The home of football!

How likely do you think the following is to happen?

Adelaide United
*Auckland (Auckland City)
Brisbane Roar
*Brisbane 2 (Brisbane Strikers)
Central Coast Mariners
*Gold Coast (Gold Coast United)
Melbourne City
Melbourne Victory
*Melbourne 3 (South Melbourne)
Newcastle Jets
Perth Glory
Sydney FC
*Sydney 3 (St George-Sutherland-Wollongong)
*Sydney 4 (Liverpool-Campbelltown)
Wellington Phoenix
Western Sydney Wanderers

We would have a 16 team league (14 Aus teams) with derbies in all major markets. If the end target for the A-League is a 20 team comp it'd leave four spots for expansion (Canberra, NQ, Tas, Perth2).
However, if the FFA does decide to make it an Australian-only league (ie: no Nix or Auckland) it'd still give us a strong 14 team competition with even more options for expansion down the track.

Player pathways are covered if we go by the federation player numbers and the & NPL allotments.
- 5 from FNSW .
- 3 each from the FFV and FQ.
- 2 from NZF.
- 1 each from NNSWF, FW and FFSA.

The major cities are represented as fairly as possible, meaning the league/sport gets maximum media coverage.
- 4 teams in Sydney
- 3 from Melbourne
- 2 from Brisbane
- 1 each from Auckland, Perth, Adelaide, GC, Newcastle, Wellington, Gosford

And it'd be able to extract a maximum deal from tv contracts since it's heavily based in the metro/OZTam markets.
- 13 teams in the Metro/OzTAM rating areas.
- 1 team (Newcastle) in a Regional TAM rating area.
- 2 teams from NZ to help get a better deal from SkyNZ.

Canberra > Gold coast and i think that would be the FFA's strategy as far as Australian teams go. For the 2 NZ teams, I hope so but i dont think the FFA have them in mind.

South Melb have been itching to get a licence.Personally after giving it some thought,as long as they can fund a licence it would be good timing to finally get them in.
I believe there would be great publicity and interest from everyone connected with football.
I would imagine decent crowds wherever they played and rivalries developed quickly.
In Melbourne there would surely be big games between them and MV and MC.
Even in Sydney I imagine there would be big games.
So what is the major impediment?
(Probably should be a separate thread)

Let´s say phoenix don´t last the distance, I would favour South coast, Canberra and south melbourne coming in, bringing the league up to 12 teams.

Gallop consistently says that we need to fish where the fish are, well these 3 are markets where the fish will not get caught unless they have teams. South Melbourne have an existing support base, established club structure and brand, and its supporters aren´t going to magically jump onto another Melbourne team because the FFA tell them to. If it´s about metrics, then surely South Melbourne have the sustainability that a lot of existing teams don´t.

Canberra and the south coast have more than sufficient populations to sustain teams, and are geographically excluded from the market. Canberra for example, has a larger population base with more expendable income than both Newcastle and central coast.

This south sydney business sounds ludicrous to me. I understand wanting to get another team into the sydney market, but for god´s sake use some common sense. Choose a fast growing area, a bit out of the way, not a primary catchment area for an existing team. I´m not a sydney expert, but perhaps campbeltown/liverpool fits this bill?
