Just to add to MSC's post above, back in the 80s, you could pick up "Il Globo" to check out the results of all the "Italian" clubs in the NSL and in the state comps, and you'd be lucky to see one Italian name in the team lists.
In other words, they became open to all a long, long time ago.
It always was, and still is, a complete non-issue.
Also, this idea that a club must represent a geographic area is a  complete red herring.  Yeh, if you want to limit the natural growth of a club, limit it to a geographic area.
Those of us who aren't from Melbourne are genuinely surprised when we see that the Melbourne based AFL clubs are all ringed around the CBD, about half of them are actually in or on the outskirts of the CBD!
Do they all derive their support from the same inner suburbs?
Of course not!
I'm guessing it's the exact same thing for the big Premier League clubs.
So the big limiter is to continue with this contrivance that clubs must be created to represent specific geographic areas.
It's nonsense.
If a club can move up the footballing pyramid representing a geographic area, that's great, but it's equally good if a club can grow, thrive and prosper representing no geographic area (a bit like Juventus in Italy).

Its a lot less limiting chanting "roar roar" or "cock a doddle doo" or ringing cow bells I agree.. The children love that ol'Macdonald had a farm shit.
Be careful , if you say the word "Italy" 3 times out load you may become Italian.... it's very scary.

Hard to imagine Italian fans chanting IT - A - LEE, even the 4th generation kids know how to pronounce the name of the country in Italian, admittedly, they don't know too much else.
Lowy's racist policies would have even disallowed chanting Ju-ve, a name a few Australian clubs carried for 4 or 5 decades.
Question has to be:  why bother banning such a name?  To what end?  What does it achieve?
If you all want to follow skip football clubs, you've got the NRL and ALF to satisfy your needs.

Getting any significant level of sustained, engaged support has been a challenge for our code, riding the constant rollercoaster.

What we need is a stronger mix of clubs, from geographic or those based on deeper historical connections to certain communities. It adds to the tapestry of the game.

I for one am looking forward to the day a NSD starts with clubs like SMFC and Sydney United, then eventually opening up for P&R to bring back some interest. My only hope is that the baggage of those dark days of the past Do not reappear, as the nationalistic BS was certainly a significant factor in how toxic things had become.

It wasn’t something that should be swept under the carpet though, as some try and do at times, as the elements of nationalism bubbled away and just gave more ammunition to those who were already trying their best to tear our sport down.

Let’s hope that the future brings far more prosperous outcomes for the game, but there will always be some that feel left out for a number of reasons.

The only reason it’s been hard to keep sustained support is because previous administrations insisted on cannibalising our supporter bases by banning everyone in sight regardless of whether they were in the wrong or (most often) not. Who’d of though that stopping large percentages of fans from attending games would lead to decreased interest...
2012-15 for me was probably the peak of general and active support in the A-League and we were on a huge trajectory. If the FFA actually fostered or even remotely valued the importance of this then right now we’d be in such a different place. Instead we had Gallop and friends trying to be heroes every round and overnight the hype of the A-League fell off a cliff.

The new APL or whatever they call themselves have a simple equation - value and treat your fans well and you’ll have plenty of them. Sadly I think the ship may have sailed though cause a lot of people pivotal to active support and terraces across the league have gone into the wilderness and probably won’t be seen again.

There's a lot of truth in what you say, but worth recalling that our largest attendance average was season 3 when it hit 14,600, which, looking back, is massive.  We thought that was the new norm.
It then declined for three years, rose again for three years, hit 13k in 2013-14, which is also quite good, but has now declined for 7 consecutive seasons, although the last two seasons have been COVID impacted.
The good news is that we should see a rise next season for the first time in 8 years.
I'm not sure there is any one key reason for these rises and dips.
At the start you had the natural growth of a new league, then we let in a few poor drawing clubs and it dipped, then we re-calibrated and let in the Wanderers, and that coincided with a few key signings, and there was growth again, but it has stagnated since, and the inclusion of the two latest clubs pretty much ensures those attendance averages will remain low.
I'm on the record as supporting the inclusion of the Bulls, but circumstances have been such that they are guaranteed to remain a very small drawing club, and Western United is going exactly as we would have predicted.

Mate the reality is that the so called "mainstream establishment" now seems to hate the "new football" as much as, or even more than, they hate the "old soccer".
There is not much of a future if we continue to also hate each other. Nobody is sweeping the ills of the past under the carpet however describing them as worse than the ills of the present doesn't resolve anything.

The Aleague franchises ARE plastic buddy, just like McDonalds and Subway and KFC are plastic. Just like the Big Bash cricket teams where kids go along and wear buckets of chicken on their heads.... You see it as a slur on your club but it IS a reality of how your league was set up..  I dont hate them  or you though (as much as you seem to hate me and my club) and I think its a good thing your clubs are finally moving away from the franchise plastic model they were set up as. It wont be easy, some clubs are tearing themselves apart internally and others are dealing with disinterested ownership groups or even syndicated ownership from other teams but they have been around for a while now and are making the right noises about forming individual identities and taking individual directions. Except for the Tarneit Gypsies... I mean f#cks sake that is just terrible, surely even you cant defend that dumpster fire of a scam? Believe it or  not, back in the NSL days we would have loved a Melbourne Victory or WSW to be established for all the skip supporters and  others who felt left out by our clubs.. As much as we all laughed at Lou Sticcas abortion of a prototype for WU in Carlton Soccer Club, we would have loved the crowds to have jumped on it back then and for them to be coming to Bob Jane with fans...  Why do you think Perth Glory's biggest home crowd (non finals) is still against South Melbourne? We loved playing them down here.
You and others seem to have this stigma  that us old NSL club supporters are these  ultra nationalistic anti Australian biggots who wanted to play mini world cups in this country against other nationalities and fight the wars of our parents in the backyards of suburban Australia...... That we where just wannabe European Soccer thugs, with flares, and swearing chanting, and fighting in the terraces according  to the media ..... Sound a bit similar to how your lot are being portrayed doesnt it? Only difference I can see is you play in fancy new stadiums to better crowds  with special bouncy dances and craft beer and four and twenty while we had riot police on horseback in crumbly, muddy suburban grounds, with a cevap or a souva and whatever beer was on special at liquorland that month.  😎✊

I feel that we would be better suited to just expand 20 with champion spots that would give all NPL champions 1 free season in the league and then give them the choice of going back down to NPL or pay $5 mil for a 10 year licence sort of like getting a free trial month on a Netflix's subscription.
That would open the league up and providing a number of fodder clubs to make the current sides look like they're giants

Nobody wants to be “let in the league”

people just want a system where clubs are able to reach the highest level provided they are good enough.

See you have a total misconception of who I am, I'm not Frank Lowy.
I don't hate you, don't even know who you are nor do I hate your club, I give your club little thought, but that does not amount to hate, nor do care  whether you club is in the A-League or not, that is your insecurity.
I just retorted to your comment that Sydney FC is a plastic club, by stating that many non Greek people (including myself, having followed football in this country since the 1974 world cup, but never had a passion for any club in Australia until Sydney FC started), would struggle to support a club in Australia that chants out another country's name during a club match in Australia, this is not a slur, but a fact, no issue as a person of Greek heritage, you do support them, I'd have no problems if they were in the A-League.
But you make it out to be everyone hates us, no they don't. That war is long over.

Dont tie yourself up in mental knots bud, its not doing you any good.... Go watch your artificial tournament that took you more than 40 years (So you loved Soccer abd followed the Soccerros but couldnt support a local team because  they didnt like Portugese people?.... pull the left one it plays jingle  bells) to discover a franchise that didnt chant "another country's name"  if thats what makes sense to you...You shouldn't care f I think your club is plastic anyway, I stopped giving a f#ck what plastics thought of my club ages ago... this is all just to piss you all off.... its great.

Dont tie yourself up in mental knots bud, its not doing you any good.... Go watch your artificial tournament that took you more than 40 years (So you loved Soccer abd followed the Soccerros but couldnt support a local team because  they didnt like Portugese people?.... pull the left one it plays jingle  bells) to discover a franchise that didnt chant "another country's name"  if thats what makes sense to you...You shouldn't care f I think your club is plastic anyway, I stopped giving a f#ck what plastics thought of my club ages ago... this is all just to piss you all off.... its great.

Geez you are full of yourself, you make up things, where did I say they didn't like Portuguese you goose. I said I had no passion for any team.
Many people felt the same, this is the truth, that they did not gel with a team that Chanted Hellas or had the name Croatia on them. We live in a free country, we are allowed opinions.
You are the one who is bitter & twisted, I never once criticise the NSL, you call the A-League an artificial league, I never once said Sth Melbourne should not be in the A-League, but you called all A-League clubs plastic. My only comment is why many like me didn't connect with NSL clubs.
I go to the A-League with many Croatians & Italians, it seems you are one of the few stuck in the Lowy fight back in 2004-5.

we need more clubs in WA to improve the viewability to ASEAN markets basically I want to get the same level of popularity of j-league in Thailand for A-league in Indonesia and Singapore by giving them more content at around the same time zone would make it a hell of a lot easier

Don’t give some of the owners too many ideas, they may think playing regular season matches in Jakarta and Singapore are a great move :)

WA should get a NSD presence, but will be interesting to see whether they go down that path in the initial stages as the added costs could be a significant burden.

Perth was a star market for the NSL, and it’s a pity to see things fall away, but honestly in the rollercoaster that sports outside of AFL and NRL seem toco strangely ride, it’s no surprise.

As mentioned I have no issues with the Greek flag, that was Lowy & co. I have no issues at all with any ethic background clubs.
I have no issues with Phoenix supporters with Mexican or Jewish flag. That is no issue to me if the reason is to support.
But if now someone decides to bring a Lebanese flag to a Phoenix game to bring conflict to the Israeli supporters, that is a problem.
