Football community rallies around Adam Goodes
A hastily-deleted tweet on Wednesday from ex-Brisbane Roar player Griffin McMaster, inexplicably calling for indigenous AFL player Adam Goodes to "be deported', sparked condemnation from the wider football community, as players past and present threw their support behind the beleaguered Sydney Swans star.
But it is far better for indigenous rights that he is not in our game. Let me explain.

Firstly, there's talk he might retire. Adam, seriously? Mate, not only should you play on, you should increase what you're doing 100-fold, create new ways to express your culture on field, in press conferences, anything to keep this conversation going.

Because you have achieved something immensely valuable, you have started a process that indigenous Australia and the rest of us needed desperately and we all need you to follow through til the end.

I'd like to see every indigenous Australian perform your spear dance at work, in the boardroom, on the field of play of every sport, walking down the street. Get in our faces, show us what is meaningful to you about your history, cause a far greater celebration of ignoramuses than you have already succeeded so spectacularly at.

The bigger the storm you cause, the better job you are doing of agitating for change. 'Softly softly' has not worked, it has been too long since we stole your land, extinguished much of the most beautiful culture on the planet, and it is only through people like you that we can be made to face ourselves.

And that is what most scares Australia, that you will hold them, us, accountable for our actions and subsequent apathy.

But you must. Take the commentary and move on, laugh at the ignorance and keep pushing, expect the radio, the twittersphere, the conflagration each time you show the pride in yourself as you must, because it is all a critical part of the country's journey to healing.

Adam has done more for the furtherment of indigenous rights that anyone in recent memory, and so he bloody well should because he has a platform, a profile and a responsibility to his people.

Talk of retirement is stupefying. But, then, it is AFL.

In football, where Adam began his sporting journey, we would adore him, ask for more, we'd be hugely proud of him. If Adam scored for Australia and did his dance on the global stage, we'd be in tears, because our game inherently understands diversity.

That's not to say our game lacks racism. We don't because it is everywhere, but the game itself is culturally open to everyone.

This is why, though I would have loved to have Adam in football, he is better placed in AFL which in my view, has a history of entrenched racism against aboriginal Australia.

Though I don't follow the game, we know this from the histories of two of our great champions and moral leaders, Charles Perkins and John Moriarty who, as stolen kids housed in Adelaide, were asked to use their abilities in AFL and ultimately refused, because they were forced to dress in a different shed to the whites.

These two marvellous men were taken in by football, by the 'wogs' and wrote the rich story of their lives with football at its heart.

So, what Adam has done is very powerful indeed, exactly what an Australian of the Year should do, to challenge.

And he will inevitably be publicly caned because he is a lightning rod for an issue people feel intense emotion about. Bringing change is painful, firstly for those forcing it through such words or actions, but mostly for those challenged who will always lash out viciously from fear.

Opening a wound hurts, right?

I have seen, and participated in this cycle both within the game and externally as football stood up to other sports, to entrenched media prejudice, to ignorance and fought for our own way forward. Different issue and magnitude, same reaction.

Further, Aboriginal Australians are, in a very real sense, still 'wogs' in their own country. We in football can immediately relate to their cause.

Not only should Adam not be at all concerned, he should be absolutely delighted with the reaction because it is what his people need.

Not for decades has an indigenous Australian caused such important upheaval, such glorious chaos to bring out the worst in the ignorant mass. Bravo, Adam, you have now moved beyond the sporting field, but your place on it is fundamental to the opportunity you have created. Don't easily throw that away.

To the contrary, go further, go harder, be more provocative.

Get people doing the spear dance, I'll do it with you. Get other teams, other sports, other walks of life showing solidarity, but leverage all of it to increase understanding in Australian society, to educate and never back down.

Great issues require people of great fortitude to weather the storm of ignorance.

The shame we have as a nation, that aboriginal Australians can live in squalor, poverty and devoid of education and too few care enough to do something about it.

I'm doing my bit with John Moriarty Football in the top end but, again, here is where football and AFL fundamentally differs.

John, wife Ros, their kids and a passionate staff expend every resource teaching the toddlers to read, working to overcome debilitating health issues through nutrition, in keeping the kids in school and all the while giving them the chance to play and grow in football. Every, single, day. And they do it on the whiff of an oily rag.

AFL sends a highly paid 'development officer' into town every now and then to scout for talent, and they leave. No legacy, no daily action, no end to the cycle of poverty and disadvantage. Just a talent search.

Acquiring talent has nothing to do with fighting a cause through sport.

Adam Goodes has great talent and, inadvertently or otherwise, is now the long overdue face of a cause Australia has to confront.

This entire issue also demonstrates clearly why the future of a more tolerant and understanding Australia is football.

Come to think of it, all we need now is an AFL playing 'boat person' to mimic an oar.

Adam Goodes is an outstanding citizen and sportsman. He has not got any controversy attached to him. I hope he moves forward from these experiences, from people that are oxygen thieves and racists. A non-racist would not bring their mind to do that. I am from Euro decent, and i'll tell you, there should be an example made of certain so-called supporters to send a strong message.

Griffin McMaster could he make the transition to AFL, goal keepers are tall, they have a big boot, they catch the ball, the weakness you don't know about their endurance.

I'm with Goodsey on this one. The AFL bandies about the term "Indigenous game" for itself but it only recognises that Australian culture goes back 200 odd years. Goodsey has the temerity to point out that Australia day is the moment that his culture was destroyed and points out to a girl that it isn't ok to call black people apes and the whole sport turns on him.

I can understand aboriginal greviences but at the same time i am told i should feel guilty for a crime i didnt commit. The indigenous are a loving and welcoming community with an amazing culture but I'm confused as to what my relation is meant to be. Am I a criminal unable to pay his debt?

Don't talk to me about disadvantage. I live in a town where aboriginal people can use the public health system or the purpose built aboriginal-only health facility paid for by taxpayers. Meanwhile, the public health system is crumbling and forcing people (non-aboriginal people) to drive over 5 hours to the next closest centre.

Similar exists in school, purpose built no expenses spared for one particular race that can still use the public system. Whereas if your not aboriginal, too bad, into the public system you go with crowded classrooms and teachers with threadbare resources.

Andrew Bolt says it's up to Adam Goodes to apologise for standing up to a 13-year-old girl who racially vilified him to end the booing controversy.

The News Corp blogger, who has been convicted of racial vilification, told ABC's 7.30 the Sydney Swans player would be "embraced" if he admitted he was "wrong".

He also called Goodes a "victim" and his war dance "dangerous and stupid" and racially divisive.

"How it would best be stopped, but it won't be, is for Adam Goodes to say, 'yes, I did overreact'," he said from Melbourne on Thursday.

"Singling out a girl for public humiliation, like that, I thought was wrong and if Adam Goodes said it was wrong, I think he'd be a superstar; all people from either sides would rush to embrace him."

Bolt called the booing directed at Goodes "bullying" but denied it was because of his race.

Instead, he said, it stemmed from an "overreaction" by Goodes, and what he called the "racism industry", to the teenager for calling the dual Brownlow medalist an "ape".

ABC sports broadcaster Charlie King, who was also invited on the program, said it was "extraordinary" to suggest it was up to Goodes to stop the racial vilification directed at him.

"It's not Adam Goodes' responsibility to fix this matter up," he said.

"This is a dangerous time for Australia and if we don't deal with this matter… I'm afraid how Aboriginal people will react to this if the requirement is always for the person who is racially vilified to be asked to apologise for it."

Speaking from Darwin, Mr King called on non-Indigenous players to repeat the war dance Goodes performed during a game against Carlton in May to end the controversy.

"If you want to take the fire out of it, that's what you do," he said.

Mr King said the booing was hurting, not just Goodes, but all Aboriginals in Australia, including himself.

He asked Bolt and all Australians to put themselves in Goodes' shoes.

"You're the one white person in an Aboriginal side and has all Aboriginal spectators sitting in the crowd, mostly; all the commenters are Aboriginal, all the newspaper writers are Aboriginal people," he said.

"You're trying to do your best you can for your people, you want to show them that you can compete when you're in the minority and you celebrate with a little bit of a dance and they turn on you and start calling you names like monkey and King Kong. How would you feel about that Andrew?"

Bolt then compared online trolling he had received to the racial vilification Goodes has described as experiencing.

"You've got to get over some of this stuff," he said.

Some viewers of the program took to Twitter afterwards to question why Bolt was invited to share his views on the issue when he had been convicted of racial vilification.

SYDNEY supporters have vowed to take justice into their own hands if opposition fans boo Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes again.

Swans fans say they will sneak eggs into the next game Goodes plays and pelt any opposition supporter who dares boo the dual medallist.

Swans fan Stephen Johnson said cheer squad members from the team’s old South Melbourne stomping ground and Sydney had to decided to act after becoming fed up with opposition supporters.

“We’re going to load up with eggs and anyone that boos him is going to cop it,’’ he said.

“It might sound funny and we might end up with egg on our faces if we get kicked out by security but we want to make the booing stop.’’

He said Melbourne-based cheer squad members travelling to Sydney for the match against Adelaide would also hoist flags saying, “If you boo you’re racist’’.

The fans’ frustration comes as Swans legend Bob Skilton told the Herald Sun he hoped the controversy didn’t bring Goodes’ glittering career to a premature end.

“I just think it’s disappointing that we’re playing a team sport and for some reason they’ve picked out one bloke,’’ Skilton said.

“I personally hope Adam hasn’t played his last game and hangs in there and shows everybody,” he said, adding it was unfair Goodes was a target.

National Centre Against Bullying chair Alastair Nicholson said the cultural impact of the “cowardly behaviour’’ multiplied tenfold in the professional sporting arena and set an appalling example to children.

“Clearly the boos are having a serious impact on Adam’s wellbeing,’’ he said.

Geez this is getting depressing. The whole treatment of this issue by parts of mass media and social media is farcical. OF COURSE Adam Goodes has been, on several occasions, the victim of racial abuse. And, yes, he has EVERY RIGHT to call people out for that (which, for the record, he has always done in a way which could only be called civilised, proper and appropriate). And yes, at this point it is almost undeniable that the booing is, at least to a significant extent, racially motivated. The fact that these arguments are being had is in itself a pretty damning fact for Australia as a nation right now.

I'm genuinely stunned by the number of people calling him out for being "a sook", "playing the victim" etc. Can these people not see that the man is clearly the victim of racist abuse? Ok, I believe that some people are booing because of their thoughts on Adam as a player, but it has to be recognised that some (most? I'm not sure but definitely a significant proportion) are booing because of his race. And for that reason, the booing all needs to stop. Nobody should have to put up with racial abuse and sportspeople are no different (why would they be?).

It is really saddening to see a man who has done nothing but stand up for his culture be subjected to the levels of abuse and derision he has been in the past week from bogans, racists and idiots.

Is everybody booing Adam Goodes really racist? No doubt there is an element of racism involved from some people, but really everybody who boos him is racist? And if the answer to that question is yes, then we're does that leave us collectively as Australians?

And why has Adam Goodes brought out this sudden bout of public racism and not Nicky Winmar or Michael Long who both stood their ground against racism?

The only AFL players I can remember evoking this level of condemnation were Jason Akermanis, Wayne Carey and Leigh Matthews( I'm a Geelong supporter).

Even the like of Capper, Locket, Libertore, Rys -Jones and Dermie didn't get this much crowd hostility...

People feel threatened when being confronted with their racism. Adam Goodes exposed the obvious and people didn't like it. Cue reaction.

this has exposed in Australia what the #blacklivesmatter stuff exposed in America. A lot of the white conservative crowd believe the "whole race issue" was sorted out and that there are no more issues. Australia hadn't had a truly high profile racial question for a while. The Bolt case was a little too technical for the masses to get behind.

This issue however, has really resonated. Certain people can't seem to grasp the position that any racial comment at all is wrong. You might think it's ok to make jokes about race because that whole racism thing is done. I'm sorry to tell you this but it'll be several more generations before race stops being an issue in the western world. The reason being is that it takes several generations for families to lift themselves out of disadvantage. Some people on here have posted that aboriginals get better government support and education and healthcare. That's all well and good but education and life itself begins at home. Home provides us with so much guidance on how to live our lives. It takes a remarkable individual to reject what he/she learns at home and turn towards influences outside of the home.

I would argue that African American issues in the USA are completely different to indigenous issues in Australia.

I kind of agree with this. Goodes' aim hasn't been to make white people feel bad. It's about making indigenous people feel proud of their culture. It turns out plenty of white Australians can't accept that though and see it as some sort of attack on Anglos.

Probably not an appropriate place to perform a haka. A powhiri (welcoming ceremony with speeches, singing, etc) is more likely to happen, but not in all work places and only on certain occasions.

So perhaps the government should step in and remove any aboriginal children from negative environments, to give them a better chance at life like standard practice for non-aboriginal children. I was wondering how long it'd take before this issue was deflected away from Aussie Rules towards being a general Australian issue.

It's only one sport in the country that has had continual racism issues.

It isn't the federal government's plan. The Abbott Govt has unilaterally decided to cease providing funding tot he states for municipal and essential service in remote communities. In response the Premier of WA said that some communities would have to close. He said this because he is essentially an arrogant prick.

What he should have said is that this reinforces the necessity of examining the ongoing sustainability of these remote communities and what can be done to look after the people who are living in communities which are unsustainable. This is the process that has now commenced.

You're right, the indigenous community is wrong. Thankfully white Australians are out there to let them know when they are and aren't allowed to feel vilified.

Before the character assassinations begin let me state a few caveats:

I am no AFL fan.
I have not been following this closely (though how could you not hear about it).
I am not saying this is exactly the reason why people are booing but a part explanation.

Back before most of the posters here were born there was a charming cricketer named Richard Hadlee who was tearing the Australians a new arsehole in just about every game he played in the late 80's.

Spontaneously the chant "Hadlee's a wanker" sprang up at the MCG.

Hadlee called out the Australian crowd and the rest is history. Every where that Hadlee went the chant followed him. Newspaper articles by the dozen were written, TV interviews conducted, there was a great wailing and gnashing of teeth, A Current Affair and whatever the Channel 7 equivalent was ran stories about it and the cricket commentators even chimed in to say enough is enough. All it did was embolden the crowd to become louder and more vociferous ever time Hadlee played.

None of the appeals helped one iota.

If nothing else it made it worse.

What's this got to do with that?

Whilst I think there's no doubt a racist element who are unhappy about an aboriginal Australian pointing out some uncomfortable truths I believe there's a shitload of people who are booing him simply because they're giving the great Australian "Fuck You" to the people who are saying "stop booing".

Let's face it, most of us don't like being told what to do. In this case it happens to be an AFL crowd.

As someone who doesn't follow AFL at all, and have only heard about this via the news etc, could some please explain to me how is "booing" a player racist? Or is it more than just "booing"? Is there racial taunts etc also being directed at Goodes also (if yes, like what?).

He played over 300 games without this happening. Then in indigenous round 2013 a 13 year old girl used a racial slur against him. He pointed her out to security. People started to turn on him labeling him a bully.

Then he pointed out some historical facts in his AOTY speech that upset some people.

Then indigenous round this year he did a dance to celebrate his culture. Ever since that night he's been mercilessly booed every single time he's touched the ball. To the point that he's stepped away from the game, and indigenous athletes in all codes have vowed to come out support him.

But apparently it's because he stages for free kicks, despite over 160 players getting more free kicks than him this season.

I challenge anyone to watch the Marngrook Footy Show from last night and still say it's not a racial matter.

Edit: on the last part, just this weekend he was told to go back to the zoo by a fan in the crowd. Who of course claimed it wasn't a racial slur.

I have just as much right to say 'This is my country' as Adam Goodes, second-generation Australians from Asia, Europe, Africa or a full-blooded Aboriginal. Unfortunately, there are a concerning amount of people in this country who think that to be white and NOT filled with a deep sense of self-loathing and a need to apologise for it every week is racist by default. Yes there was terrible shit done 200 years ago, but there's nothing we can do about that now. Continuing to bring it up and have people rub it in our noses like dog shit only creates divisions and groups people into 'us' and 'them' based on race- and isn't that what we're trying to free ourselves from in the first place?

Said it before and I'll say it again: while I think it's excessive for people to boo Goodes every time he touches the ball, and while no doubt there's a racist element who have been harassing him up until now, the majority of people booing him are doing so because there's a lot of people in this country who won't have a bar of being told who they can and can't voice their disapproval of. It also has to do with the fact the the sort of people telling the masses "If you boo Adam Goodes you are a RACIST!" are (by and large) these sorts of wankers:

Correct, and in this case, I'm glad I'm not the only person who feels the way I do about it. Adam Goodes is not a protected species and shouldn't be treated as such.

I don't follow.

If a) her parents didn't set her straight and b) the hundreds of people around her didn't set her straight, then Goodes has done her and hundreds of thousands of Aussies a great service by what he did.

Fully deserving of the Aussies of the year award, whatever the fuck that is.

There is a final element. And that is the people booing him cos "they don't like him". Or cos he called out the 13 year old girl, or he has been critical of white Australia's past. These people don't realise they are being racist.

I still have great difficulty in seeing how someone can be disliked who has been a champion for his people, a two time brownlow medalist, a former Australian of the year and someone who speaks well in the media. People boo to put him off. People boo every footy player to put them off. This issue is only becoming racial because Adam is so outspoken. Is it because of racist undertones? Maybe some of it is.



The one about people disliking him for calling out racism is a joke. He is 100% justified for calling that girl out. He should have had a good crack at the parents for raising a racist child.

Hmmmm... 300 games without being booed? Both gf vs west coast he was consistently booed. In geelong there was the pin the dildo on goodesy after being seen in fantasy lane... wouldn't be anything if it was a cats supporter or anyone else but no one like goodesy. He got his boos at kardinia.

i do find it interesting with the west coast booing. The perth clubs are fairly unattached from the rest of the league, not in a bad way its just they don't seem to follow the trends of the eastern clubs . I always thought there was an underlying negative view of goodes in the west. In geelong he's not far behind ballentyne who is just as vigourously booed... along with johnno brown in the day.

You're right, he has been booed. But it was by a far smaller minority, and for clear reasons. He was one of the best for years, which always brings boos from rival fans, especially in big games. It's why I didn't think anything major of it when Hawks fans did it this year. He also did some ordinary things on the field, and rightfully copped it from opposition fans at the time. these acts weren't terrible though, I can confidently say at no stage has he ever been the dirtiest player on our list.

But this is different. He's been booed everytime he's touched it for almost a season. And without any new on field incident happening to justify it. I've been following not just AFL, but all codes in Australia my entire life, and have never seen anything like it in the modern game.

The same girl who spoke to Adam on the phone afterwards. The same girl who wrote him a letter after that phone call to thank him. The same girl who Adam Goodes said was completely innocent in the matter and needed more support than anyone else THE VERY NEXT MORNING.

But no you're right, I saw Goodes duck off at three quarter time and tell security to separate her from her parents and then tell police to question her, even though he immediately dismissed the idea of charging her later. Now that I think about, he's lucky he's getting off this lightly. Perhaps police could charge him for harassing the girl. It's certainly worth looking into.

Im not gonna make a comment about Goodes because I dont follow AFL and dont really know what the situation is.

BUT, interestingish tidbit, I once had to do an Indigenous Studies course at uni (was 2 semesters back-to-back from memory) where basically every lecture we would be openly told (accused?) that we are blatant racists and nobody had any rite to deny it.

The catch? Lecturer was a fucking white CANADIAN! Haha. Cut it out, Canada.

My tutor, who was an Indigenous lady, loved getting into the types of arguments many of you are having about racism here, but saw it more as a philosophical discussion rather than an accusatory thing. Learned shitloads from her and probably respected her more than any of my other lecturers or tutors because she was so willing to listen and learn and discuss things rather than force her opinion down your throat. Her opinion was that there are racist people, but a lot of it is unintentional and more of a 'white privelage' thing as well as a heap of reverse-racism (is actually somewhat how this media storm feels to me). We openly discussed the impending extinction of Indigenous culture, which is inevitable, and this was probably one of the best ongoing discussions we had. Also oftentimes discuased the benefits Indigenous Aus. recieve pretty frequently.

I think its important for everybody to talk to the older generation of Indigenous Australians and have these discussions. Have an open mind and try to learn. Dont listen to the white media bash the shit out of the "You're all racists" card to maintain a level of PC.
