Roar should contact NBL asap. They could have a basketball team playing out of the Metro Centre there.

First problem though, Lowy owns the name Brisbane Roar and colours.

Papa considers appealing Greek sentence

Brisbane defender Avraam Papadopoulos may appeal his suspended two-and-a-half year jail sentence for by a Greek court for illegally betting on matches while playing at Olympiakos.

Agence France-Presse reports Papadopoulos was one of 58 people punished by the three-member Court of Appeal in Athens for their roles in the 'Koriopolis' match-fixing scandal in 2011.

The Roar, who were aware of the centre-back's implication when they recruited him, are awaiting further advice from Football Federation Australia before deciding on the next course of action.

For now he will play in Saturday's home clash against Adelaide, with coach John Aloisi pledging to stand by the 33-year-old.

"As a coach all I'll do until then is stand by my player and support him in every way I can," Aloisi said.

"I know they're looking at appealing what's come out, so until then I'll be there to support him as much as possible.

"He just wants to play football and wants to win tomorrow night.

"You'll see that he's extra motivated because he wants to make finals."

Aloisi said Papadopoulos remained in good spirits despite a stop-start season, having also been banned for seven games for spitting towards Sydney FC striker Matt Simon.

"But every time he's played, he's performed really well," he said.

"He's been one of our best players, not only defensively but scoring goals.

"Mentally he's been in good shape really considering what he's had to go through this season."

Aloisi was ropeable after last week's loss to Newcastle, seeing it as another example of the Roar failing to get the rub of the green.

More pressing now is that it marked the team's league-high eighth loss from 11 home games, despite Suncorp Stadium's previous status as a near-untouchable fortress.

"We've got two home games left," Aloisi said.

"We know our home form hasn't been what we would have liked. Every game's been close, it hasn't gone our way.

"We have to make sure we put that right and tomorrow night is the start, because we've only got six games left and we need to win every one."

STATS THAT MATTER:

* The Reds have won four of their last seven games against Brisbane but lost the last 2-1

* The Roar haven't trailed at halftime in any of their last five games and gone on to win three (L2)

* Adelaide have scored just one goal in their last three away games, conceding eight

Yeah, but, nah ... there’s no evidence that Nirwan Bakrie wants to sell. He’s turned down two offers of $10m and then $13m according to the former MD and rumours of a third and final offer close to $20m was also being turned away persist. The man ain’t for selling, god knows why.

Brisbane Roar avoid legal action over ‘jersey-gate’ with apology to Craig Moore

MARCO MONTEVERDE | The Courier-Mail

BRISBANE Roar have avoided defamation action by absolving departing football director Craig Moore of blame for the club’s embarrassing “jersey-gate” scandal.

The Courier-Mail revealed last month that Moore was set to take action against the club following the decision to place him on “gardening leave” for the rest of his tenure by Roar vice-chairman Chris Fong, after numbers peeled off Brisbane jerseys in the club’s embarrassing 3-2 AFC Champions League playoff loss to Filipino outfit Ceres-Negros in January.

PASSION:Arnold wants to continue Postecoglou’s legacy

Moore, who receives his final wages from the club next week, was publicly blamed and banished by Fong for the jersey fiasco.

“We have a football director and the buck stops with him,” Fong told The World Game website.

“It was a systemic failure of management in the football department.”

Moore’s lawyer Tim Fuller sought a public apology from the Roar, alleging the statements attributed to Fong carried “defamatory imputations” to his client.

When that wasn’t forthcoming by the set deadline, Fuller filed an arbitration application on behalf of Moore with Football Federation Australia, claiming the Roar and Fong were in breach of several FFA regulations.

Moore was also considering legal options under the Fair Work Act for being “unfairly treated as an employee”.

But after “numerous correspondences”, Moore has settled for a confidential deed of settlement in which the club formally acknowledged he was not responsible for the jersey debacle.

“Our position has been that the defamatory publications and the erroneous allegation that Craig was somehow responsible for this debacle needed to be corrected,” Fuller said.

“I am pleased to say that we have finally arrived at this point.

“The Roar acknowledge that Craig was not responsible and have provided a glowing reference that highlights his outstanding contribution to the club and to Australian football in general.”

Despite the settlement, Fuller remained unhappy with the way FFA handled the situation.

“The conduct of the Roar throughout this matter has been less than adequate. As the governing body, the FFA demonstrated a reluctance to intervene and hold the Roar to account for their conduct,” Fuller said.

“This situation has demonstrated that an employee can be ‘hung out to dry’ by their A-League employer – and the governing body displays a reluctance to step in and take action.

“Clearly, (that’s) not acceptable for any sport in this country.”

A Roar spokesman said the club wished Moore well for his future endeavours.

Meanwhile, Brisbane defender Avraam Papadopoulos has had successful surgery on the ankle he broke at training on Tuesday.

Must admit it does come across as amateurish - only one step removed from looking for people to go onto the roster to wash the shirts or sell raffle tickets.

People will see what people will want to see unfortunately.

There’s 5 years of promotional kit such as scarves, water bottles, shirts, hundreds of spare A League and W League shirts, caps, key rings, flags, etc. none of it’s going down to Logan so it needs sorting in to usable and into the bin.

What’s reusable the Federation will take and distribute to junior clubs, community groups and selected charities - the volume is huge and there’s some good quality stuff in there it’s not just promo junk. Hence the need for volunteers not movers. It ain’t being moved to Logan but from Ballymore to our storage. Biters will be biters though because they see what they want to see.

The goalposts aren’t worth moving, main reason is Logan have kindly installed them at the new facilities and these portable ones were going to be left behind - if we can get a flat bed truck we’ll take em down there. If not they can stay.

In England, which the biters like to think is “real football” not plastic clubs like we have, some clubs use volunteers to clear the pitch of snow, clear training pitches of snow, paint grandstands and make basic repairs to stadiums, and man things like the club shop - all these things the clubs could pay for but choose not to do because people are happy to volunteer. It’s part of club culture, it’s the same at local junior club level - my club uses volunteers for things they can afford to pay for but we save the money and get volunteers in.

So this Friday and Saturday over 20 volunteers will help Roar sort years of stuff out. They’ll walk away with as many water bottles as they want and a few shirts for them and their mates as a thank you for their time. Thousands of other items will be sorted into usable piles which will go to good causes. The volunteers will do that and stop good stuff going to the bin.

In addition, those down at Logan will get a tour of the new training facilities and the three buildings there. It’s probably the only time the general public will be allowed inside the two players buildings, how cool is that.

And yeah, in addition I’ve no doubt we’ll be helping staff bring down the final boxes and some odds n sods from the club offices. And that’s cool - if English supporters aren’t too proud to help out why would we be?

People say they want “football culture” well here it is .. but they’re still bitching. Funny that.

@ clockwork

It was a message to RSF members, they seemingly don’t need chapter and verse and plenty have put their hands up to help .... everyone else has got an opinion but none of it particularly helpful.

As I said, English supporters will do almost anything to help their club out (as will some Roar supporters) seems as though some Aussie’s want to sweat the small stuff or are too interested in offering an opinion on what others are prepared to do.

Get yourself along on Saturday, you might enjoy it.

You'd think Holman would have had Media Training at some stage

Former Socceroo Holman on Friday said the Roar were out to end their poor FFA Cup history by beating City to move into the round of 16 for just the second time since the tournament’s inception in 2014.

“Obviously it’s not everything but it would be something to fit in the trophy cabinet for the Brisbane Roar,” the ex-Aston Villa playmaker said.

We’re not going there for a bit of fun like we’ve done in the past where the results haven’t been that great, we really want to have a good crack at this.

Closed HAL is failing with 10 teams
Closed HAL failed with 11
FFA forced to try a 12 team Closed HAL thatll just create 2 more mid table also-rans
and still this weird 16-team panacea gets trotted out.
Theres a sticky for this nonsense
