'Violent' soccer fans arrested in Sydney

Three people have been charged after a brawl involving more than 60 Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC supporters on Saturday night.

Source: AAP

25 Oct 2015 - 4:44 PM UPDATED 1 HOUR AGO

A brawl involving more than 60 people was among a string of violent incidents, including smoke bombs being set off and bottles being thrown, at an A-League soccer match in Sydney.

Three people were charged, two were issued banning notices, and 18 people were removed during a game between the Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.

NSW Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Tony Crandell says violent and anti-social behaviour was rife at the match.

"Last night the safety of the public, staff, and police were put at risk by people who have no respect for the sport," he said in a statement.

"It is evident that some supporters came prepared to cause injury and ruin the night for others."

Police allege the violence began even before the game started when a brawl broke out between up to 60 Western Sydney Wanderers supporters and a group of Sydney FC fans outside the stadium.

Police on horseback were called in and officers used capsicum spray to break up the fight, which lasted about 10 minutes.

A number of large bolts, which officers allege were to be used as missiles, as well as a hammer and a flare were found nearby.

Officers also had to break up two separate fights both during and after the game.

Twelve flares were set off during a march to the stadium, and nine more flares and four smoke bombs were ignited inside the stadium.

One man is facing charges after allegedly throwing a bottle, and another man is facing one charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

A woman was arrested for running onto the pitch, and others also had to be removed after entering the playing area.

Damage was caused to about 50 seats and a number of railings at the stadium.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage and more charges could be laid.

Police condemn violence that mars another Sydney A-League derby

TOM DECENT

Last updated 19:06 25/10/2015

Australian police have described fan violence at a chaotic A-League derby between Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers as "unacceptable" on a night when flares, hammers and large bolts intended to be used as missiles were confiscated by authorities.

A total of three people were charged and two issued banning notices, while 18 supporters were ejected from Allianz Stadium during Sydney FC's 1-0 victory over their arch rivals Western Sydney.

Fights, pitch invasions and a bottle-throwing incident marred the game and according to police were carried out by "not your ordinary sporting spectators".

Before the 7.30pm kick-off, police were forced to use capsicum spray and physically restrain a number of Wanderers fans who joined a group of 50 to 60 people and ran towards Sydney FC supporters in the hope of starting a fight.

After the physical altercation was broken up, police located a number of a bolts - suspected to have been used as missiles – as well as flares and a hammer.

There has been animosity between the two clubs, but Saturday's derby went a step further with 12 flares being ignited before the game, while another nine were let off inside the stadium.

Central Metropolitan Region Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner, Tony Crandell, said the incidents on Saturday night were unacceptable and were a poor reflection on the game.

"The behaviour of some of the supporters last night, in particular from the Western Sydney Wanderers supporters section prevented those who want to watch the match from enjoying themselves," Commissioner Crandell said. "Last night the safety of the public, staff, and police were put at risk by people who have no respect for the sport.

"The people involved in the incidents are not your ordinary sporting spectators. It is evident that some supporters came prepared to cause injury and ruin the night for others.

"The aspect of enhancing atmosphere unfortunately comes at the expense of public safety and common decency, which is clearly not acceptable."

It is not clear whether the theft of a Sydney FC fan banner exacerbated tensions between the two teams' supporters, but the overall behaviour of the crowd was unusually rowdy and violent.

Two people were evicted for offensive behaviour, a man was arrested for throwing a missile after allegedly throwing a bottle from a Sydney FC supporters section, while eight others were told to leave the stadium after being deemed too intoxicated.

Meanwhile, there was a fight between two people in a Wanderers' section and an alleged assault from a Sydney FC fan. Police were also called to break up another fight on Foveaux Street as people made their way into the city after the match.

Police also estimate 50 chairs and a number of steel railings were broken by fans from both teams at opposite ends of the stadium.

CCTV footage is being reviewed and investigations will continue into the incidents during the match.

Congratulations to every dickhead involved in every one of those incidents. You detracted from the spectacle of a sellout derby and allowed the anti-football media to recycle the same old stereotypes and ignore the fact that anti-social behaviour is as bad, if not worse in the other codes. I hope you all fall into an open sewer and drown.

Just brilliant.

A large amount of damage was caused to seats and railings within both fan sections at both ends of the stadium. Approximately 50 chairs and a number of steel railings were broken or severed within the Western Sydney Wanders fan section.

Investigations into the incidents will continue with police reviewing CCTV footage.

Violence and offensive behaviour rife at soccer match in Sydney, police say

Police have charged three people after several premeditated fights broke out during a soccer match at Sydney Football Stadium last night.

Eighteen people were removed and two people issued with banning notices at the match between Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers, police said.

Prior to the match, between 50 and 60 Western Sydney Wanderers supporters broke away from a march and ran towards a group of Sydney FC supporters, before a physical altercation took place between the two groups.

Officers were forced to use capsicum spray and physically restrain several supporters.

Later police located several large bolts suspected to have been used as missiles, as well as a hammer, and a flare.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Tony Crandell said it was evident some spectators had planned the violent behaviour.

"The people involved in the incidents are not your ordinary sporting spectators. It is evident that some supporters came prepared to cause injury and ruin the night for others," he said.

A total of 12 flares were also ignited outside the grounds and supporters from both teams prior to the match.

Officers arrested a man and issued a court attendance notice for possessing a flare.

Police said nine more flares and four smoke bombs were ignited within the Western Sydney Wanderers supporters area in the stadium, prior to and during the game.

Another man was arrested and issued a court attendance notice for throwing a missile, after allegedly throwing a bottle from the Sydney FC supporters section.

During the match a pitch invader was arrested by security staff entering the grounds from the Western Sydney Wanderers supporter section.

She was issued a court attendance notice and banning notice, and was removed.

Two other people were evicted for offensive behaviour, and eight other patrons were removed for intoxication.

Near the end of the game a fight broke out between two men within the Western Sydney Wanderers supporters section. Both were evicted.

Police enforcements had to be called to the stadium to prevent further violence.

A man from within a group of Sydney FC supporters was arrested for an alleged assault, and was issued a court attendance notice for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Following the match police were required to break-up an altercation between two groups of supporters.
Damage caused to stadium chairs, railings

Significant damage was caused to seats and railings within both fan sections at both ends of the stadium.

About 50 chairs and several steel railings were broken or severed within the Western Sydney Wanders fan section.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Crandell said violent and anti-social behaviour was a particular problem at this event.

"Police and the community as a whole want matches like last night's soccer match to be a family-friendly affair," he said.

"The behaviour of some of the supporters last night, in particular from the Western Sydney Wanderers supporters section prevented those who want to watch the match from enjoying themselves.

"Last night the safety of the public, staff, and police were put at risk by people who have no respect for the sport."

Investigations into the incidents will continue with police reviewing CCTV footage.

Clubs and supporters need to be so over the top punished for this type of behaviour(MELB derby as well) that the clubs and their supporters actively turn on these idiots.

As usual the fuckwits will come out and say it's no worse than you get at a cricket test, AFL or NRL match but I go to all three (as well as AL games) and I have never seen this type of stuff. It's quite clear that these fools go as part of a mob to cause trouble whereas problems at the other sports are generally caused by blokes who have had too much grog. If only this was the problem at these occasional AL games.
Just fucked that these large minority of turds just take the shine off what is a great occasion.

It is a media beat up but it is not just guys letting off steam. If you can't go to a football match without assaulting somebody or damaging the stadium you shouldn't be there in the first place.

Cricket is the worst sport for ejections, every game I have been to sees at least a hundred drunken yobs removed but they don't get this coverage.

Australian police have described fan violence at a chaotic A-League derby between Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers as "unacceptable" on a night when flares, hammers and large bolts intended to be used as missiles were confiscated by authorities.

But later in the article its just a hammer.

After the physical altercation was broken up, police located a number of a bolts - suspected to have been used as missiles – as well as flares and a hammer.

There's a difference between getting kicked out for being too pissed and wilful destruction of property.

Correct me if I'm wrong but has there ever been significant damage to stadium seats at a cricket match in recent history?
