I think that is inaccurate. The issue is that there was a 20 year period post-WW2 where there was a massive boost in population in the west. This has combined with a large increase in life expectancy to create a very unusual demographic phenomenon where instead of a demographic pyramid (most people young, relatively few people old) you have this massive bulge of baby boomers feeding through society.

We don't need "perpetually larger populations", we just need enough younger people to make the glut of elderly baby boomers manageable until they die out (in roughly 2050).

You are looking at the issue far too simplistically I think.

Why isn't Japan taking any of these people? They are richer and have a bigger population.

Perhaps Japan actually place a value on their culture and homogeneity that they do not wish to undermine and leaders that do not view human beings purely as economic units.

The video is an uncomfortable truth that no matter how many migrants or refugees a wealthy nation can realistically take in, the problem is only getting worse and in fact we are actually hurting those poorer nations by taking their better educated and upwardly mobile.

Japan only has one culture though and is one of the most densely populated countries on the planet. Australia has a plethora of differing cultures and is one of the most sparsely populated on the planet. Apples-Oranges .

I do agree though that by taking their best and brightest (typically the most persecuted and willing to flee) it does stifle their development. I read an article about a Polish politician wanting to form an army out of the Syrian refugees and send them off to fight. This is straight up bullshit, but perhaps we could gather the intellectuals of the bunch and use them to develop long thinking economic and social strategies for the region. This would be a much better idea than letting the port and swans blood drinking snobs like David Cameron try to decide how to run a foreign country

Despite the fact that Japan is densely populated, they remain one of if not the most advanced civilisation on the planet, very safe, very well deucated, rich as fuck, great health etc. Their population is also expected to fall by 25% over the next few decades or so due to low birth rates. They could easily take way more refugees/immigrants than we could. Way more.

It seems that despite they would benefit in a lot of areas by bringing in a number of immigrants/refugees to help them they still don't do it. The answer is either they don't want to alter their culture and homogeneity and/or they help
refugees/immigrants in other ways. :-k

Advanced first world economies don't need such a high population anymore, think about how productive we're becoming per capita and the rise of automation.

Japan has got it spot on tbh.

What if I told you, that these refugees are actually running away from horrors, but will stick to their culture and customs, passing them on to their offspring, who will grow up and wonder why they 'don't fit in' only to answer the call of a jihad in another country, only to displace more people and have them migrate. Rinse and repeat.

Wonder where I've heard this story before.

What are you basing that on? If By civilians killed/taken captive/forced to leave thats not true at all.

IS killed 5000+ yezidis in Iraq with the help of their muslim neighbours.

Isn't the death toll in Syria at least 250k now? That's the total death toll, and not just the ones killed by ISIS, but still, that's a lot.

Well, SOHR estimates somewhere between 250,000 and 340,000 dead. That's a pretty big scale - 90,000 odd people. I'd say the death toll is easily over 300k though. If this conflict goes on for anther 18-24 months, which in all honesty I see it doing, we could see 500,000 killed.

Yes, but most of that is because of the fighting between the govt and the "Rebels".

There is one which shows how many civilians have been killed by which forces but I can't find it, in any case civilians killed by IS is quite low compared to the Govt and Rebels.

Yeah that doesn't really help, you need the chart of who did the killing, not who got killed.
