Sacking Stajcic looking more and more stupid. He was getting the best out of a team hitting above their weight. Then to replace him with an inexperienced coach as a supposed move to improve them is akin to replacing Ange with JA. Sadly the defensive woes endemic in Australian football at the moment seem to have permeated into the Matildas. That's a very worrying sign.If you have no confidence in defence, you have little chance of winning games.

+xSuch a big mistake that we keep playing Brazil, usa and Japan over and over and not playing these European teams, they appear to have moved way further ahead of Australia, Brazil end Japan. Bang on. Have said the same a few times here. I think this is as high as we'll ever rank now that other countries are throwing more resources at their women's teams.

Good hit out, in the last hit out against the USA it exposed our defensive structure with the high offside line and against the Netherlands once it got exposed.
What it shows is that when defending this style, our fullbacks look badly exposed by high and wide wingers that look to get behind us so the width of our defending needs to be alot better, also our closing down which was good in the first half wilted away in the 2nd, i suspect the high fitness levels are not there for that to do on a consistent basis and so it might be advised they chose the moments to press and keep the back 4 or 6 with the holders much more compact.
Now the fun part, we created chances firstly through our press when we had the energy and secondly we looked to break in transition we looked dangerous too, Raso was outstanding for us and also our crossing was good for once, however i was disappointed with Foord and Kerr who showed little in that regard in breaking lines like Raso did. But we can create chances against the best sides which is very encouraging we need alot if we want to give this thing a real tilt.
I feel like the midfield could be better, i hope we see a fully fit Gorry, her KK and Van Egmond would be a decent combination I'm still baffled why Luik or Chidiac did not make the squad as they would have helped our midfield stocks.
Italy will be a different matchup to the dutch though, they will give us different football problems.

That's why youth development is so important, countries change of fortunes changes around when the investment and right technical decisions are made from the get-go, unfortunately the FFA have no prioritised this crucial field on both male and female sides in the last 10 years and now its paying a price for the Socceroos, the FFA NC is not enough sadly.

On the other hand, we have pace to burn up front. I would have thought the obvious tactics would have been to sit deeper and play on the counter.

Luik did make the squad... and gorry puts no effort in on defense. She's worth 25-30 mins max coming off the bench in AM. Harrison and Luik are also only capable of playing a solid 45.
we are better off taking out vanegmond and putting in a midfield of yallop, kk and Logarzo. Our 3 hardest workers in midfield. what would be even better than that is put foord up top, devanna on the left, raso on the right, kerr in am, kk and yallop in cm.
unfortunatley we have no depth in defense, the current back 4 is our best with only Alleway a decent replacement. We Should have taken McCormick as another defender and allens spot is a waste. Raso is a better secondary RB when required, She has the pace to keep up with the oppositions wingers. G.Simon on the left imo was also a horrible choice. Her defending in the U.S game was diabolical.
the squad would have been slightly different under stajcic I think. A few changes in the roster, the same 4-2-3-1 formation though but the players would be in different positions to where they are currently. He wouldn't have vanegmond as a deep midfielder for one.

I think Milicic wants to play like Ange wanted Australia to play. Fine and dandy against lesser teams but when we come up against quality teams and they press us hard we don't have the composure. Tournament football is a different animal in any case. Results actually matter. Given our pace up front, as you say, I wouldn't be playing it out every time from our back and through their midfield. Suck them in deep and occasionally go over the top or switch it long. That's not to say they should be playing route one but a mix of the 2 styles. We're going to need large slices of luck if we want to go better than last time. And I'm with Barca I'm spun out that Chidiac couldn't have been squeezed in somewhere notwithstanding her apparent lack of game time.

+x+xMary Fowler hopefully. No guarantee she'll play for Aus. Can still play for Ireland or png. A very good RW, DM and LB were not available due to injury etc. 1 at oxford u16 and 1 at southampton u16 (banging in goals galore) both originate from same club in Brisbane. One of them is moving to arsenal wsl setup at u21

Why against Jamaica when we were 4-1 up didn't Milicic give Fowler 5 minutes and tie her to Australia? Baffling.

+xWhy against Jamaica when we were 4-1 up didn't Milicic give Fowler 5 minutes and tie her to Australia? Baffling. If Australia lose her, it'll be infuriating. Her brother, too. It sounds like they want to take a kind of 'family first' approach. To me that appears rather pathetic, you should play for the country in which you have the most emotional investment (so usually where you spend the majority of your upbringing). I guess that's Australia. Just because your sister played for another country - irrelevant, you're not her. James Pattinson's brother, Darren, has played Test cricket for England. Did James want to play for England - no way. It was of no relevance to him at all. Edit. Having said that about the 'family first' approach, Fowler agreed to be part of the Matilda's squad. So hopefully that counts for something.

Surely u17 matildas squad list will be out soon? just over a month before the finalWC qualification tournament, doesn’t seem like a lot of prep time with only 2 Asian spots up for grabs.

Man U v City replay on tv (while I wait for NFL pre show). See Chelsea had 24k today.
w-league is already finished. The good thing for AL clubs is that it may be easier for them to sell female players than male players in the future.

“The top 55 players in the world in 2019 2 FIFPro has released their shortlist for this year’s World Best XI.” “Number of players by country: USA: 14 England: 7 Netherlands: 7 France: 6 Brazil: 3 Norway: 3 Sweden: 3 Chile: 2 Germany: 2 Venezuela: 2 Australia: 1 Canada: 1 Denmark: 1 Italy: 1 Japan: 1 Spain: 1” https://www.allforxi.com/2019/9/4/20849037/top-55-womens-soccer-players-world-2019-fifprounfortunately FFA optimism doesn’t win WCs.
