+x+xTheres gonna be games this year where we arent going to be in it after 5mins. But games like today, which were there for the taking in the opening 20mins or even the whole of the first half, really needed us to do more rights than wrongs and post points on the scoreboard. Some scoreboard pressure may have been enough to put self doubt in the Dragons and make them lose the game. We didnt do that and sooner rather than later their class was always going to be more than ours. We cant afford to not take these opportunities. We need to jump to a 10 or 12 point lead and only then we can play conservatively and focus on high completions. When we had the ball in the Dragons ten and couldn’t put on points it reminded me of every game for the past six years. We haven’t looked good in attack since Ennis left. Mick was never the greatest hooker in the game but he offered so much more than what we have now. B.Smith can’t come soon enough. B Smith is a man with options. If I was B Smith I wouldn't come to us for $1mil a year.

+x+x+x+xThe Dragons were not that great, if we played like that against the Storm or Panthers, it would have been ugly. Nathan Brown suggested that they were beaten by players who think on their feet. Do the Dogs have any who can do that? None that I have seen. Our forwards particularly the props, out played their opposite numbers. That is the excuse for the spine players put to bed. I am happy with Averillo at 6. DWZ is one dimensional at fullback, running hard is great, but we saw how effective it was. Katoa at 9 has had one good game. Flanagan managed a good game round 1, since then he hasn't managed 5 good minutes. The defence was poor particularly the right edge. However, would focus on the spine. I hope Lewis and Allan are ok, both taken hospital. Lewis got a very minor dose off knees in the back, that shows how dangerous it can be. Allan unlucky, but it was a nothing play, we invited them to bundle him into touch. Sorry but our forwards were owned by the Dragons pack. Look at the stats on NRL.com Only Renouf 164m and Thompson 137m made over a hundred meters. Seafood Salad almost there with 94 meters Compare that to the Dragons. Laurie 144m Vaughn 199m Sims 125m McGuire 122 They made 1928 meters to our 1501.
Our forwards were shit. Our backs made decent meters but were only on par with the Dragons. Our hookers were both useless and halves probably worse.
Barrett was right to hook Flanno. But all it showed is how shit Lewis was. Avo is trying hard but is a massive liability. Katoa try’s hard but his service is pathetic and he lacks any ability to read the play. Fullback still a massive problem.
I feel sorry for Barrett. The point is that we were on top in the yardage game when Atoni and Odgen came on that is perhaps the most dominant our pack has been all season Flanagan took some bad options, we looked clueless in attack. Dietz and Lewis didn't look much better than Katoa and Flanagan., but they had fewer opportunities. Lewis looks good in reserve grade, but can't currently deliver in the NRL. Katoa and Flanagan have had 9 games, and played 1 good game. Ava went off HIA soon after coming back on otherwise his numbers would have been better. That, the Hoppa sin bin, and the general run of play shifted momentum. What I expect Barrett to do is get the best out of the talent we have. We need to put Meaney at fullback and try a new hooker and halfback. Atoni was the standout forward in the game Odgen made some good runs. The silver lining for me is that our props can match it, more than any game this season this game showed how far away from an NRL standard halfback Flanagan was. He fully deserved to be hooked.

It is a waste of time time and money recruiting any player for the 21 season, and we need to see which of our current players stand up. In that game Ava, Atoni, Odgen, Meaney, Averillo, everyone else missed tackles, dropped ball, was slow and off the pace or made critical errors. Not a great game from Thompson, but he will bounce back. A team with a substandard hooker and halfback looks rudderless, becuase that is the reality, it is hard to play well in that kind of team.

To the contrary the woeful first tackle kick deep in the Dragoons quarter proved something could be turned to nothing in a squirrel's blink. Even by our standards that was a doozy.

Exactly, Flanagan was hooked he will now be dropped or retained. If he is retained it will be a miracle if he somehow finds the form he has been missing all season. Hooked then dropped is worse for his confidence than being dropped a few games earlier. Our players deserve to play in a well organised, well balanced team with everyone capable of their job. It is hard to look good playing for a rabble. The other big issue was our right edge defence, it was a shambles at times and has been an issue most games this season. Smith in the 2nd row didn't work, especially not for long minutes. If the team isn't organised in attack and the half makes brain dead plays, coupled with a defensive weakness, no repeat sets and substandard line speed- there is only one result. Flanagan wasn't the issue in defence, hard to pinpoint, but Smith and Hoppa were in the mix. I still think Baz can coach, but he needs to rethink some aspects of team selection. Little to lose by trying something different.

Our team always finds a way to turn the absolutely nothing into something for our opponents.... Seems that way doesnt it. Our greatest attribute is turning around the fortunes of our opposition. I think you made a post earlier about how besieged teams just cant wait for us to play them into form.....its so true. The problem with this team goes beyond just their talent. They have been losing for so long that they just dont know how to win. They are perennial losers in mind and skill. Even with talent, it will take a while for this team to become galvanised and know it can win games before a ball is kicked. It's a long road ahead I reckon even Tom is questioning just how bad we possibly are....

It will also do a world of good to the bulk of players we let go this year who would have plenty of time to join the doll queues at Centrelink...

I made a comment to my son yesterday that we have only about 3 leg tacklers in the team...it is Lewis, Thompson and Elliott. This was after watching repeated runs from Dragons forwards carrying our 2 high tacklers to at least 5 post-contact meters before one of Lewis or Thommo decided to chkp his legs and bring him down. Our tackling technique is poor. By not having a plan on how to tackle players in various conditions, speed and angles, we place increased pressure on the above 3 guys to take matters into their own hands, and it results in increased injuries. When they dont do it, we give up 60m in 5 tackles and it costs us the game. When we do it, we remain competitive in the ruck but it fatigues our players and takes out our playmaker. It is bad coaching. Not necessarily Barretts fault. It's an inherit problem for years as previously it was only Lichaa and Elliott who tackled low while others watched. I know you have to wrap the ball to stop offloads and 2nd phase play, but if you watch the top teams (panthers, storm and eels) they share the role of high and low tacklers. Melb wrestles the best and is razor sharp on this aspect of the game. They can do it with just 2 tacklers. Eels rely heavily on Reed Mahoney for it while Panthers have learnt to share this workload with their young and enthusiastic pack. It's just another part of our game that needs developing. It's why I like Lewis so much. Unfortunately he wont have much of a career if he stays at the Dogs. I think a move to Broncos is best for his career if they can get a good halves partner.

So one bit of good news is the reserve grade side went ok, considering that it was a young inexperienced side. I assume Allan and Lewis are out of the next game, Ava is a 50/50. I am hoping thst he makes it, if not Britt/Napa is the most likely replacement. Schoupp should replace Allan unless we are forced to use Katoa. IMO Wakeham should replace Flanagan, Topine should replace Katoa. Ava and Atoni starting props, Thompson lock. Elliott and Doorey starting 2nd rowers. If Napa is ok, the bench is...Napa, Odgen, Dietz, Wardell/Smith So I probably would drop Wardell, Katoa and Flanagan. Wakeham needs at least 5 weeks at halfback regardless. Topine and Schoupp should also get a few games. Time to roll the dice. In fact it is overdue.

We certainly should give some young talent a fair go. But we are just shuffling the deck chairs on the titanic.
I tried to convince myself that Flanno and Burton were the answer. But I think we desperately need experience. If we throw in Brandon Smith who is experienced but lacks vision and good judgement we could become even worse.

+x+xThe number of Dogs players missing from Canterbury Cup had nothing to do with injury but rather keeping the players available for possible selection in round 10...they had to remain in the bubble.. Parramatta on the other hand played all players who didn't get a game against the Rorters with a consequence they may be barred from playing in Brisbane next weekend. In other words they may have to have the 17 that went round in round 9. Players out were, Wakeham, Topine, Schoupp, Britt, Stimson, Roumanos, Katoa. He's been in and out of the team plenty of times in the last 2 years. 3 weeks is enough to show his worth. One thing is for sure, on current form, he cant possibly be worse than Flanagan. In fact I've seen his worst and it's still better than Flanagan.

If Wakeham doesn't work out, try Lewis next. Flano may come good after a few weeks in reserve grade, but he has to earn his spot back, there is no rush. Part of earning it is being consistent and patient. Burton and Averillo are my plan A next season, but we need plan B. In the long run Lewis, Wakeham and Flanagan are fighting for one position and a long career at the dogs, there is no 2nd prize. My money is on Wakeham or none of them, with none being 50% plus, Lewis and Flano less than 10% chance IMO.

Wakeham seems to make better decisions than Flanagan too. His kicking is certainly 10 times better. I've said it before... in our team with all the 1 out stuff, wes make God himself look pedestrian. If Barrett can somehow get a group of guys to roll forward in waves with multiple players charging at the line or at least look like they night receive the ball, these halves might have something to play with. The only players I feel that can actually create on their own are guys like Cronk, Reynolds, DCE, Wighton and Cleary. We are going to have to change our method of attack. I just dont know how long it will take.

The only players I feel that can actually create on their own are guys like Cronk, Reynolds, DCE, Wighton and Cleary. We are going to have to change our method of attack. I just dont know how long it will take. IMO the difference is that Wakeham has playmaking instincts, plays short and square. That kind off half only needs 1-2 players running onto their passes. And Wakeham has a running game. Flanno might be more vocal and may better organise the team, but it isn't working, we are lacking a cutting edge and purpose in attack. The best plays are instinctive or at least the hardest to defend. If no one runs on to the pass it is hard for halves. There was also a glimmer of hope that Wakeham and Averillo combined well, are used to playing with each other and are on the same page. We need to see more to be sure, it was at the backend of a game with nothing to lose. Even the Storm have abandoned highly structured footy, there is no point in putting on moves, teams can defehd them in their sleep.

Jack DeBelin is very lucky...without question an absolute lowlife piece of excrement...but a very lucky lowlife piece of excrement...who is further evidence many rugby league players should not be allowed to consume alcohol.

The only players I feel that can actually create on their own are guys like Cronk, Reynolds, DCE, Wighton and Cleary. We are going to have to change our method of attack. I just dont know how long it will take. Of the halves mentioned, Cronk was the only one who always had a dominant pack leading the way, he was fortunate to have played with the Storm and Roosters, the super powers of the last decade. But notice when they are winning Dally M points it is on the back of the go forward, not behind a pack like the Dogs have. Flanagan also played behind a dominant pack at the Roosters. Being punted by them was always a red flag and it seems they were right ATM. All the fanfare of his signing slightly embarrassing for Barrett. I've always thought two halves in the last 3 years were never given a proper go after playing on the back foot, namely Wakeham and Cogger. The Dogs ruined Cogger who I reckon would have been better than Flanagan. He at least took the line on as does Wakeham. Change the attack! We started to get on top in the 1st half yesterday and I reckon Terry Lamb would have been disgusted at the lack of players not following the ball waiting for a quick offload. Just shovelling the ball sideways in slow motion is under 10's stuff and contributed to Allen's injury. Allen and Cotric must be so peed off to have joined the Dogs and watch their Origin jumpers go up in smoke. Waddell is not popular with our fans but at least he tries to straighten the attack, whether he has the ability to go with it is questionable, but Elliot just runs sideways. I am waiting for 2022 and hope that we have a renaissance when the players get desperate for a contract for 2022. Atoni and maybe Ogden and the Seamwhatever hopefully get a go.

I don't remember ever being as nervous watching an individual player than watching DWZ. Yes he runs it up hard but he rarely gets through and he runs so hard with the ball in one hand so can quite easily lose the ball in the tackle. And so he does. Under the high ball he is suspect , and he has no soft natural pass in him. And doesn't a fullback these days have to sniff around the ruck looking for a forward's offload ? zilch here too ! An ideal winger only!! Poor old Nick Meaney has been chopped and changed both with Pay and Barrett- the guy's confidence must be fragile
