For example, Mark Hughes was in Queensland last week looking at some potential recruits. He's got his eye on this gun playing in Ipswitch.
Obviously Pay hasn't got the time to travel and scout players because of his coaching commitments.

Hughes may approach this kid's manager or parents and ask the question whether he would consider playing for the bulldogs. Hughes will then get on the phone, ring Pay and say "This kid's got it, I can see some real good potential, I recommend giving him a go, I'm going to email you a clip to watch Deano, tell me what you think"
A day later Deano responds, "yeh I like what I saw, bring him down for an interview if he's keen, I'll get Opes' opinion on it as well"
The recruitment committe will then sit down and discuss it. Then they will ask Hill "Andrew what's the cap looking like, how much can we afford to Pay this kid" Andrew may respond, "well we got about $300k in the kitty to spend on development players"...Opes may respond and say "I wouldn't invest too much into this kid, I think no more than $100k, what do you think Deano, if we can get him for $100K would you be keen?" Then Deano replies "I'm keen, If Hughesy thinks this kid has what it takes, i'll give him a go"

A year later the kid turns out to be a flopp.....who's fault is it? Is it soley Pays fault or should Hughesy shoulder some of the blame? you tell me?

Like when Pie eater Cleal failed to jump on Lateral Mitchell, Conner Watson and Cameron Munster when they were offerd to us. Who's fault was that?

My point is, you cannot SOLEY blame Pay for bad recruitment, it's a team effort!

There's a huge difference between a young player and a seasoned established star. If the young kid becomes a flop, no big deal. The real measure is how good or bad your first grade recruitments are.

There's a huge difference between a young player and a seasoned established star. If the young kid becomes a flop, no big deal. The real measure is how good or bad your first grade recruitments are.

The reason to recruit a develop talented kids is very few clubs can afford to bid for top quality proven NRL talent in sufficient numbers to make a strong team. Adhering to the salary cap and the budget usually means the bulk of the squad are average at best.

With the talented young player, they may sign for less initially, that means you can pay the rest of the squad more, unless the club is the Roosters this is the way to go. Even the Roosters now develop a fair portion of their squad.

What was wrong is the Des era is precisely the fact that we signed proven NRL talent and many of them were average at best.

Moore did a good job of rebuild the club with proven talent, but it was a total rebuild and they simply made some astute signings, that can make a club a contender if all goes well.

But Barba was the X-factor player who added a lot to the 2012 NRL side.

Facts are since I've been following the Dogs most of our better players were bred not bought, there are always exceptions, but you can't buy a premiership winning side, unless you are the Roosters.

So you need to get both areas right. In the long run scouting and development are more important, recruitment is just filling in the gaps.

Am seeing plenty of calls for Lynne to make a statement like "dib did/would" on other sites... The last thing we want is our chair in the press a la Dib... It would be an indicator of a seriously immature organisation... Leave the talk to pay and hill...

Oh and the players, well frankly, they need to shut up too.. I wish pay would take a Skeletor approach and keep guys like OK making their debut/season debut (im still shocked) on a press ban for at least a few weeks from the time they are named...

Re Steve's comment on OK being well spoken, if on field performance is on par with the likes of the well spoken mbyes and lichaas of the team I'd rather 17 Dylan Napa's...

Dman they just do press these days as someone has to front the camera ... no big deal.....

What they really want to talk about is how bad the gig was that they were forced to sit through as punishment, hint it was at an old persons home :)

What kind of statement to they want Lynne to make?

The fact that Chris tells lousy jokes is obvious to all... that fact that he tells one joke a decade is a blessing...

The team punishment for the next loss should be a Chris Anderson stand up gig....

I get we gotta do press, but we get to decide who... And debutants are not who should be talking about themselves in the press leading up to game day...

TBH I'm still shocked by several team selections this week... I see a bloke that probably shouldn't have been dropped to Reggie's, and two blokes that didnt earn a shot playing in Reggie's...
Am hoping that promotion brings out the best in meaney and OK, but I doubt it... Of the pair OK due to his frame most likely to succeed but needs about a kilo of rosin on his palms... Meaney will get rag dolles if he doesn't put his body on the line and run without purpose like he has in Reggie's...

What a player says to the media has zero to do with game day performance.

It is game promotion and that is all it is,  they are just doing their job.

Funny...I was asked if I wanted some pussy and I ended up in a Cat Café. Have to stop playing the Vapors only ever hit. Maybe this week is the time for the Lich to shine. BTW if not mistaken Parra scored zero points whilst he was on the field.

Steve, I doubt anyone would've realised I quoted something from a link you posted a fair while ago in that joke yesterday, with the lines "I believe I'll have another big orange" etc. I thought you might've noticed, but I wasn't sure, so I tried finding the link to re-post it but wasn't able to.
It was from a US comedian that was portraying a character that had never heard of football & how he got swept along to a match & didn't have a clue what was going on etc.
It was a funny clip that I think someone had uploaded to youtube from vintage antique vinyl, probably from the days guys like Mel Blanc were starting out, indicative of how old it was.

Shit Rod..I missed it. Trying to put heaps of ebay stuff on...yes I like getting ripped off. It was Andy Griffith and the track is called "What it Was was Football" ...he started as a preacher and I think you will find he was originally billed as Deacon Andy Griffith. His early comedy work is great. If you like a hillbilly interpreting non hillbilly stuff. Love Stan Freberg and Andy's comedy stuff.

My ears are burning...just listened to Elvis and Lisa Marie doing a Nat King/Natalie Cole style duet on "Where No One Stands Alone", an album of Elvis gospel classics given new backing. Why? The originals are so good. Sacrilege and at the moment pain. I couldn't stand even a minute of it!!

Just found this...as a fellow Mad magazine aficionado...they actually put the whole sketch it a 1958 issue using Andy's original dialogue.
