"What I've said is that I don't intend to seek re election," he told FourFourTwo.

"The future is unclear..." Lowy said he was making today's announcement to "remove myself from the debate so the stakeholders focus on the core issues at hand."

He outlined three possible scenarios for the FFA EGM that will approve or reject the proposed changes to its structure... and he said only one – where the board accepted the proposals – would be the catalyst for him quitting."The second possible outcome is that the working group proposals are endorsed by at least a 75% majority," he said, "Under those circumstances I would not be prepared to serve as Chairman beyond November."

The other two alternatives - where the current uncertain status quo continued and a third where "stakeholders step back and consider fully the long-term implications of any decision – seemed to leave open the door him to remain.

Although I don't want them in the FFA leadership structure, I hope the Lowys continue in football. If they invested their money in a club and used their political influence to better the plight of clubs (because that would be in their self-interest if they owned one) then I could imagine them still doing some good.

if you read recent reports he isn't necessarily gone yet ...is quitting only if Congress report is implemented. If his little spoiler federation minions stop the vote for the Congress  report being implemented he may continue ...thought it was too good to be true .

"Overnight, it was claimed Lowy would be standing down from the FFA as chairman as part of the ongoing row about reforming football's administration in Australia.

But at an explosive press conference in Sydney today where he blasted moves to overhaul the sport's governance, he refused to unequivocally say he would definitely stand down.

"What I've said is that I don't intend to seek re election," he told FourFourTwo. "The future is unclear..."

Lowy said he was making today's announcement to "remove myself from the debate so the stakeholders focus on the core issues at hand."

He outlined three possible scenarios for the FFA EGM that will approve or reject the proposed changes to its structure... and he said only one – where the board accepted the proposals – would be the catalyst for him quitting.

"The second possible outcome is that the working group proposals are endorsed by at least a 75% majority," he said, "Under those circumstances I would not be prepared to serve as Chairman beyond November."

The other two alternatives - where the current uncertain status quo continued and a third where "stakeholders step back and consider fully the long-term implications of any decision" – seemed to leave the door open for him to remain.

He dismissed speculation that he would change his mind and stand if he got the backing of stakeholders as "hypothetical."

OK, so I have just read Lowy's official release on the A League website and the central theme seems to be that he believes the best thing for the game is an independent board running the game like the AFL (yes, he mentions the AFL)

Here are some points:
1/ The AFL doesnt own the clubs. The clubs are completely independent entities from the governing body (which is why Collingwood and Carlton were able to have NSL teams)
2/ The AFL doesnt own the WAFL, SANFL, VFL etc... It supports grassroots programs with a few cash injections but they dont own or manage them

The AFL is a body set up to govern a single league, hence the name. Every cent that comes into the AFL is spent on the AFL, with the exception of a few kick backs which the AFL can afford given the amount of money it is extorting from governments

Therefore, the structure that Lowy stands by and praises as the best way forward is independent league from grassroots, and independent clubs from league, where the league body manages its entire cash flow. This is the system that works for the AFL and one that we must learn from history instead of trying to reinvent it and make the same mistakes

I'm confused. Why then are the FFA trying to establish a system of one body controlling the grassroots, national league and the clubs - after it has seen that an independent league body with independent clubs that has a single purpose is the most successful formula in this country (and around the world)?

How can somebody 3 years in charge as the chairperson not know this?

Just consider this.

Stephen Lowy has stepped down ...

He is now not part of the conversation... he is gone..

The discussion now should move to whats on offer...

WE need to accept """Yes""" as the answer. Lowy is gone lets not talk about him, victory has been achieved.

Lets now put the same blow torch to the belly of those who would take his place to ensure they also do not become similar to Lowy.

I said it could have been a big "Fuck You" to Griffin as he rode off into the sunset after he got his inheritance.

Looks like Frank has outlived FIFA and let Stevie off the hook, (or they've finished shredding)

As for the franchises, they still don't actually have full control, and an Independent league doesn't mean they will either.

And even those who are purely $$$ minded will realise eventually that the 80% of Football that don't give a shit about the closed HAL is a missed 'opportunity'

Independent Closed HAL won't have anyone to blame anymore, their model won't fix it either.

Some sources suggest that the reason Lowy is so desperate to remain in charge until the end of November relates back to the tainted bid for the 2022 World Cup.

ASIC regulations require corporations, including those limited by guarantee, to maintain all financial records for seven years after financial statements are lodged.

The seven years is up for 2010-11, the final year of grant monies from the federal government, in November 2018.

Surely that’s just a coincidence. Isn’t it?

Weasel words. He isnt gone if the recalcitrants veto the CRWG proposal.

The guy is deluded. He said..'we're the only independent thinkers'.......Like it's a virtue. But what does that even mean?........The fact you have skin in the game apparently means you can't think independently to benefit the game?So if you are an ex player, club owner, referee or fan ,it means you shouldn't have a say because you can't think independently?...Clearly ridiculous.

Lowy is confusing independence and conflict of interest. This has been apparent for a long time.Conflict of interest is the problem. You have rules in governance to avoid conflicts of interest. You dont need to be independent. It's a meaningless statement.

Having a congress made up of people who know nothing about football and have no pecunary interest is not a model for success. In business ,if you want to be successful you have management that knows a business inside out and has a direct interest in how it performs, for example ,by way of shares in the business. An independent director for example that has no skin in the game would not care that much and would not know that much other than broadbased metrics.(just like we have now people who are out of touch with what the real football people want).
That's why you don't want soley independent board or congress members.

Coming up for 14 years and still only 10 teams, stale and boring, says it all really.

Continuing down the same path would get us no where, it had to happen for better or worse like you said.

Yeah agree, more so the last 2 seasons have asked for some bold moves, but nothing has happened.

Not even an explanation , even if it was grass roots they put a lot of funds into.

My thoughts is something fishy is going on with money splurging at the NT level. He certainly looked happy when he mentioned this

This would be good news if there were reasonable alternatives, but the anti-Lowy forces are just as bad and probably much worse. Any cut to the national team and development funding will be disastrous for the game here, but the greedy franchises and the old soccer farts (apparently in ascendancy again) refuse to see this.

The a-league will always be crummy and insignificant by international standards, with or without a salary cap and pro/rel. The socceroos and matildas are what really matters in Australian football. For all their faults and dictatorial tendencies, at least the Lowys understood this. My main worry is that the new order cuts the national teams adrift just so horrible people like that Griffin clown can increase their revenues. That's the last thing I want. Frankly (Lowyly?), I prefer the status quo.

Always wondered this. Why does the Lowy cult fund the NT's ? Surely this should be the job of the federal government anyway (fucking perplexing).

Because the teams are starved of investment. Investment in players. Investment in infrastructure. That $6 mil in the bank gives the teams a cash flow they sorely need. For bigger loans, bigger investments.

FFAs corporate (for-profit) structure is completely fucking wrong, wrong wrong wrong wrong. Correctly labelled a franchise, there are so many many other designs of a business model. FFAs is truley the fucking wrong one.

First, seperate the fucking NTs from the A-League. I would say let the government part-fund the NTs. These sleezy Lowy grubs need to get there hands off the cash themselves.

A-League should be a self-governing structure with its own leaders. It's own cash, A-League money should never be used for anything else , your starving the clubs and double-barrel shot-gunning the league in both feet.

This will end similar to what has happened with Lucasfilm:

George Lucas makes prequels - people hate them and his writing/directing

Lucas then gets doubtful over his vision and ability - sells willingly to Disney

Disney produces the abominations of Eps: 7 & 8 - fans realise George was actually trying his best, balancing his vision with fan expectations and economic reality.

Fans with brains want George back - but it's impossible as he's burned out personally because of his prior treatment

Disney continues making garbage films that shit on your childhood

You'll all want the Lowy's back one day.

He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.
