Well, nothing from Tarneit, but a few socceroos have come out of North Geelong, like Skoko, Spira and Horvat.

I was thinking current players as future signings.

Please don't lump Geelong into this abortion of a franchise - Geelong is not a part of Western Melbourne, despite what the marketing shills want you to believe.

If theyre playing in Geelong (and probably becoming geelong when the stadium doesnt get built) might as well engage with it

Honestly just make it a Geelong team IMO

Lol from Lara perhaps - you're not getting those times from Central Geelong and further south. Not to mention, there is no train station at the stadium site, so rail travel is moot in the discussion.

I don't know how to post screenshots here, but if you went to the PTV site and punched Geelong to Tarneit into the journey planner, it says 31 minutes (35 minutes to South Geelong where Kardinaia Park is located). admittedly trains aren't as frequent on weekends (every 40 minutes i think), but that will change once the line is electrified and quadruplicated. And there will be a train station at the site, thats why this specific site was chosen.

it takes 30 minutes to get a VLine from Southern Cross to Tarneit. it Takes 30 minutes to get a VLine from Geelong to Tarneit. Tarneit is exactly halfway between Geelong and Melbourne. So I would have to say i disagree with your assessment.

And while Geelong is predominently Victory, the region is still a natural target demographic for this team. spending their first couple of years in Geelong should help them build a Geelong support base.

Which is issue at hand.
The whole region has already been exposed to HAL football with the Victory being so accessible to the games for so many seasons.

It's not inconceivable to think that there could be a station there by the time the stadium is built. However, that means the government needs to build one. Who knows if that is a realistic expectation or not. Then there is the issue of it being only VLine, so trains are approx 40-50 minutes apart (at best). Lines would need to be electrified to get any real increased frequency. Public transport options to and from Tarneit will be rubbish for a long time to come.

Im sure he would have been earmarked for the head coach of team 11 as Im pretty sure he is a south east boy, but would Scott Miller be a good candidate for manager of this side?

WMG playing in Geelong is the equivalent of the Brisbane Bears playing in Carrara/Gold Coast.

It's not going to end well.

@ newton circus.

Agree with you on naming. Queensland Roar was well intended and followed an established principle for teams up here (Reds, Firebirds etc) but hindered the club’s ability to find an identity.

When it changed to Brisbane it had a kind of identity crisis for a few years while it tried to be Queensland and Brisbane but was not actually either.

So yeah, get it right first time. Get fans involved too.

I understand trying to reach out to a wider fanbase, and it has proven to work for A-league clubs in this 'unique Australian sporting landscape',  (WSW),
But I'm not a fan of football club's name being anything apart from the city where their home ground is based. Melbourne City, South Melbourne, Syd FC, MV, are all sensible.

But to create a franchise name with the intention of monopolizing the whole market, and preventing any future bids / growth is just wrong. It shows no vision and the FFA should not allow it.   Tasmania United, NZ Knighs, West Melbourne, Queensland Roar...    ?
If the stadium is based in Tarneit or Hoppers Crossing,  then call the Club Werribee something... attracting the fanbase from Weribee, Hoppers, Truganina, Point Cook, Laverton etc.  Leave some room for another future Inner Western Suburbs team (Footscray, Sunshine, Keilor area).

I know it sounds pie in the sky,,,  but you gotta have some vision if we're dreaming of a 20 team A-league + 2nd division B-League.

Western Melbourne but they aren't gonna play in Melbourne for another 3 years - going to be some rough crowds at the start at the very least. I can't fathom who thought this was a good idea. At least there stadium is going to be 15k boutique though.

They will go for the animal theme i rekon, to attract Western Bulldogs fans.

Imagine the the Shitzus played their inaugural season in Footscray at the the bulldogs Western Oval.
You can call them the 'BullShits'

Terrible decision.
Besides having it’s own stadium it is the worst bid.

The west has footballing hotbed in Sunshine, Footscray, St Albans etc but there is no way fans will travel out to Tarneit to games.

SE Melb has its own identity and is much further sprawled that the west. It’s already established as a region and continues to grow at accelerated rates.

IMO of the 3 from NSW/ACT... The best one got up.
From VIC the worst one got up. Not only will they be playing in Geelong to start... who knows how long the stadium will take. Not only that the stadium is in the middle of now where, with not even a great population and transport.

What a disaster this bid is, I think it is heart disguised imo. Team 11 or South would've been much better

i can tell you a few things. black and blue (a teal shaded blue) seems to have a bit of appeal to them. So does gold (due to the 19th century gold rush in the west of Victoria). Tarneit, Werrribee or Wyndham will not be part of the name as they want a name that represents the West of Melbourne and/or Victoria. West or a variation of west (western, westgate, westside) will almost certainly be part of the name.

Why would people in Warnambool give a shit?

A new team playing out of an AFL stadium in Geelong for the first three seasons (and potentially longer) is a terrible outcome in my opinion.

Canberra is more than twice as large (in terms of population and player base) and already has a football specific stadium. Yes the West Melbourne corridor is much larger and growing - but it remains to be seen how that population will be engaged by a new team based over 40 minutes away.

If anything it should be Canberra, SWS then WMG once they've got a stadium to play out of (if you truly believe it is a more enticing bid than South East Melbourne.

Actually, that's a good point, hadn't thought of that, the owners will own it all, and if they can afford it, will run a football club on the side

From your posts you seem butthurt that the west Melbourne bid looks to be getting up, bagging the area, bagging their intentions ect. Wonder why.
