+xIs it true that they are about to implode financially? I heard from a mate South Melbourne are bidding to take-over the license. That's why all their fans have been out at the tennis matches carrying on. Watch this space...

There is a thread on aleague twitter, that has a foreign defensive midfielder trialing for WU, and Jertec is on his way out.

OK, Lou Sticca was talking up WU afew months ago on a football podcast, not long after he has abandoned ship. Also, Hutcho has gone, and more than likely Anastasiadis may leave soon as well. Canberra Utd's jersey would be green, and the expansion hopeful, would be on the lookout for a buy out situation if WU goes that way. Unless Rudan has bad b.o, with everyone bailing, I would have to agree that there is something brewing over there. I would imagine that the Tarneit Stadium is on the nose and this is the Primary reason for this situation. We can All thank the politicians, take note. I'm sorry, without any clarification, this WU franchise is going to be taken over, it will become official in the near future. No one coming out to explain the latest Stadium situation, and without bullshit, the fans will rightly speculate and the truth is coming out with every week. No more Nomad Utd pls. The fans deserve more respect from the slithering snakes.

Legitimate question, is it a coincidence that the IBAC drama over at the Casey council and the deafening silence on the Tarneit stadium and the WU money rumours are all playing out at the same time?

Deep down, I'd say most of us thought it was a stretch, that anyone would invest $180 million of private money to build a stadium out in the middle of nowhere. When you consider this was the primary reason they were given the green light over Dandenong and South Melbourne, you'd have to say that the FFA and board have had the wool pulled over their eyes. Add to that all the secrecy surrounding who the financial backers were, and it adds a bit of whiff. Speaking of stadiums, let's not forget that South Melbourne has a long term lease over one of the best boutique stadiums in Australia, in a location where Melburnians will travel to willingly for a night out.

That may have been the line that the FFA put forward, but the stadium had little to do with it. At the end of the day, WU were chosen for three reasons. A, they offered the most money for the licence, B, they met the requirement of being from Melbourne and C, they were not South Melbourne. The stadium just helped fit the FFA's narrative and sell the decision.

Remember this well from the 6/12/19 Press Release: “ Preparing planning permissions and works permits is the next phase in the project’s development, and we look forward to this. We are focussed on working together methodically and diligently, so fans across the West will have a world-class facility in their own backyard to enjoy the unique atmosphere of their team, Western United, playing in the Hyundai A-League." Permission and Permits for Shovel Use I take it

Late last year they said the completion date could be pushed out an extra year . That timeline almost definitely confirms that completion would be for the 23/24 season.

They managed to piss off the Swans and Lions out of that area but that's as far as they got as it's up to the clubs to agree. The HAL has a better geographical opportunity.

Besides tbe big games everything was either played at suburban grounds and or the g or waverly park

It's the most optimistic claim I've heard in a long, long time. They have not even started the planning process, and they hope to lodge an application, avoid any negative public action (such as going to VCAT), secure the planning approval, then provide final plans, then secure the building approval, then provide working drawings for building permits, then tender, then appoint a builder, then have the builder ready to actually commence, all within 5 months? If they said mid next year, I might believe them, but I really don't see how they can make the statement they have made and expect anyone to believe it.

From day 1 this franchise has been a complete fraud, a massive disappointment, a laughing stock and drain on the league. You simply cannot argue otherwise. South or even Team11 would have been far better choices. But hey a couple of extra million in the FFA’s bank account is all that mattered at the time. Fuck them, its actually quite enjoyable watching this disaster unfold.

I'm getting more and more critical by the day, but if the first sod is turned mid year then it would surely be ready for the 2022-23 season as they'd have 27 months to complete it. But again, thats "if" they start mid-year.

But again, thats "if" they start mid-year. Even then it's very unlikely. They estimated 3 years, which is about right for a project of that scale in this country. Parramatta stadium took 3 years and that was on an existing site with all of the infrastructure already in place. Tarneit is in a paddock with zero existing infrastructure. The 23/24 season would be a reasonable estimated timeline. If everything goes smoothly, it may be ready for the 22/23 finals.

Crowds are terrible league wide, but 8k in a 50k stadium that often has the worst playing surface in the comp is just embarrassing. I'd take South Melbourne in South Melbourne over Brisbane, City or W.U. any day of the week.
