+xInteresting dynamic this weekend... City should get a bigger crowd than usual this weekend 2 v 3 on the table. WU playing first game at Whitten Oval on Aus day.. who will get the bigger crowd? I don’t think we’ll get a bigger crowd if people aren’t following the team they won’t know it’s 2 vs 3 so they won’t show up. Western United is a new area they would need to get more then 8k for it to be a success I reckon

Weather forecast is good at 26°. Kick-off is 6pm Sunday, but Monday is a public holiday so it shouldn't deter families. The long weekend could also encourage some more travelling AU fans to make the trek across to Melbourne. They are coming off a solid win on the weekend where they scored some great goals. GA Adult tickets are $20. Easy access via public transport. With all those positives, if they get less than 5k, then the future is really starting to look dire.

20 years ago if Perth were coming to Melbourne to play us on a 6 game win streak or a solid run of form it would be a guaranteed 11-12k, and that’s without freebies. These are the games where City should be getting 5 figure crowds 2nd v 3rd on Saturday night.

Edit: Read the whole stinking thread and didn't notice it was mostly 2 years old. Own goal... The comparison with rugby league is a meaningless statistic in any state. The game has such a different context for fans and is a completely different experience. League thrives on the fact that every player is involved in every play, and every play could result in scoring. There are sufficient moments of strength, skill, teamwork, aggression, thugishness and stupidity for every fan to have something to shout about, for or against, every minute of the game - and having a few beers at the same time makes it an experience that does not require much cultivating. To say that Melbourne is an intellectual and discerning watcher of sports is nonsense (and no-one has said that) - there are as many people in Melbourne looking for a weekly fix of gladiatorial combat as a vehicle for releasing emotion as anywhere else. "We hate rugby in Victoria" is obviously a bullshit statement - you posted the statistics that prove that yourself. City are more likely to bring in neutrals from all over the country playing and developing as they are - yes as distance followers so no stats for gameday - than either of the other Melbourne teams. Whose football is more likely to bring someone back for a second viewing if they get stuck in front of a screen and have to watch whatever game they can for their football fix? City is one of those teams. If there was a statistic for "if my team doesn't win which team(s) would you prefer to win instead" then City is likely to appear frequently in that list playing as they are and being as they are. If CFG are big enough to carry the financial load of Melbourne City without needing a strong local showing to offset some dollars then their success may be in developing the sport and their following elsewhere. Good football is worth watching as long as it is not a team you dislike. MC can be a flop or not, depending on what you base your idea of a flop on. As a 10-15 year evolution of a team, they are maturing and thriving in many ways in a football sense. I am not from Melbourne so you have cleverly excluded my opinion as valid when you said I will never get it. Maybe that is true in the context you used it.
When I wear their colours, I am the club.

Honestly, City are at a crossroads, and ultimately need their South-East move to pay off.
Even as a City supporter in the Northern suburbs, it’s clear that the South East presents many more opportunities, but ultimately they will only maximise the value from it if they can build a stadium out there.
If WU can get their stadium built they will be fine. Victory will be fine once they get their issues sorted out too. City playing in the South East, and potentially adding SE at the start to represent the area specifically would finally give it a point of difference.
Must say though City have put a lot of effort into community engagement over tune, but it hasn’t paid off. Heart may have been a disaster on the pitch most of the time (Thanks JA), but there are many that loved the club that now have zero interest in City. The price of progress I guess.

Hey Heart_Fan If a new Melbourne Heart Club was formed at the bottom of the Vic pyramid and worked there way up to say NPL level, would you or any other heart fans jump back on board? Also do city own the IP of Heart?

I struggle to buy the argument that a stadium is suddenly going to make WU fine or even remotely popular. They’ve played all over Victoria already and nobody seems to give a stuff.
City are ahead by default, the south east move offers no guarantees. I’m not sure on field success guarantees anything either, this is already a strong on field club that made last years grand final. To make a genuine dent I feel like heart/City needed to deliver the on field goods back in 2010-2016. Not that many fans out there really to attract. People who care are already on board.

Well if there were fans before then they can return. Why they have left does not have a single answer and doesn't make them "non-genuine".

It can wait - as long as the stadium doesn't include a athletics track and is not owned by the government.

Oh shit, better tell Whyndham council to stop working on the "government owned" training pitch then.

Anyone got updated images of the WU facility?
Lynch claims the turf has been laid which i find extraordinary if true. They look miles off at this stage.
Wouldn't surprise me to see them play all away games and in Tassie for the first two months of the season to buy more time for their "facility" to be finalised.
I would hate to be a member of this club because their communication is just non-existent

Keep in mind, this is just a couple of training fields with a ~1000 seat stand and basic club rooms, etc. WU Update from February: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4lv8ZKGxwMIt'll be interesting to see how they handle memberships. We would have to assume temporary seating will be installed during the season. Members aren't going to pay the prices they have been if they aren't guaranteed a seat.

Yep, understand its a basic build and set-up, but surely they want to sing from the rooftops regarding the progress they are making?? They are saying a 5k to 8k capacity so would have to be a minimum of 3 or 4k seating. The article states they will be temporarily constructing stands. I.e Macedonia Park. If the last few years has taught them anything, it is that they need to keep the capacity low. 5k should be the capacity. Derbies throw a spanner into the works though. They have had so much time to study what other clubs have done, that they just need to get things completed from their end now. It is as simple as that. As a betting man and getting back to the topic of the thread. I would say that Citys 10-12k Dandenong stadium will be up and running prior to the completion of the acutla tarneit stadium.

Hahahahahahahaha Is that the same "attempted" - to have a 15k stadium up and running within 3 years of being granted a license?
- to play 7 home games at Lakeside Stadium
- to be "ALL WEST AREN"T WE?"
I hope the council hurry's up and builds the farkin thing for them, its gonna be hilarious watching them try and establish a NFL style "tailgatting party" out in the middle of a paddock .... Ill bring the snags..
