I like Maritimos new stadium, just under 11,000 built for €35mil, cost probably higher due to being on an island in the middle of the Atlantic. Would be perfect for a smaller A-League/potential A2 club.

agreed SutherlandFan, another rippa small stad.
I know where that is having visited Madeira, my inlaws are from there - Funchal is the capital.
Beautiful place and football is everywhere, its CR7's home.
35,000,000 Euro equals AU$58,654,296.68 :)

I think we all know that. Doesn't mean it's not a model worth discussing.

2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games beach volleyball venue at Coolangatta Beach. 4k capacity, $11m AUD in 2018, including media and player facilities and broadcast quality lighting, plus the complexities of building on the beach and remediating it afterwards. Obviously a smaller footprint than a football field, but with all the aforementioned facilities provided the only extra costs are more seats, which would be a smaller part of the cost.

The UK has so many lower division and non-league clubs needing to build facilities cheaply that they actually do have companies offering prefabricated stands, for as little as 1000 quid a seat. It would be nice if the NPL scene could develop something similar, which would avoid fiascos like this:

Brisbane Roar think they can get a 15k seater stadium done for $60m. According to a mortgage calculator, at 4% interest, paid back over 30 years, that would come to $3.4m per year. At present they need 13,000 fans to break even at Suncorp, so they are basically losing money from playing there. Let's say they can get 13,000 at a new ground. Then that's:

13,000 x average of $20 per ticket x ca. 15 home matches per season = $3.9m per year.

Concessions, corporate hospitality, advertising and naming rights would be on top of that (say, maybe $2m all up) and there would also be the potential for hiring the ground out for other events (NPL finals, international matches, concerts, etc.).

If a boutique-sized stadium can be built economically then the finances of teams owning their own grounds actually start to stack up.

Mudgee stadium was built in 2010 for $9M in 2010. Including lights and playing surface.

Only 1000 seats but a nice little stadium.

Those stadiums are great but to reduce onsite labour costs the way for cheap and most importantly sustainable built smaller stadiums in Australia are modular designed stadiums.

Bear stadiums are amazing ranging from 5k upwards.

you could easily custom design their modular stadiums to suit.

https://www.bearstadiums.com/en

not sure what other companies are offering similar but I’m sure we could get a good price.

I suspect owners aren’t going to jump into this type of commitment until there is stability for their investment, ie:
- a medium term (5 years+) plan to reform the league
- clarity around the operating model
- secured revenue from a new brodcast deal
- (and I hate to say this one) potentially long term guarantee of being in the league in the form of another 10 year license renewal meaning no relegation

Yeh Bear Stadiums are really the way of the future.
they are modular so you can easily upgrade and continue to grow the stadium.
They can be tweaked or have add ons so stadiums can look different from each other as well.
i am in no way affiliated with Bear Stadiums just was researching affordable stadiums and came across these beauty’s!
They are made from timber which is amazing and keeps costs down.

the range can work from NPL teams starting off.
To mid range NSD sides to 20k ALeague designs!

Does anyone else know of affordable stadium designs like bear stadiums that can deliver stadiums this way?

Love for a Club to cost a stadium like this to be built in Australia and see what the price comes out too.

very interesting to see!!

thoughts?

Yes, I am seriously referring to the recent evidence of a 4k seat outdoor stadium that can be achieved cheaply and up to international broadcast standard in Australia.

I was there for the semi finals and the atmosphere was terrific.

I’m not sure what the price would be here and how the company ship and make the prefab bit I will endeavour to email them and get an Australian dollar amount approx.

im really interested to see how it stacks up to conventional stadium construction costs

Interested to see how you go.

Being an Italian company they have probably had a hard time thanks to Coronavirus, and I imagine that their sales people would be coy on a pricetag, but it'll be good to hear more.

Thanks. It’s quite a nice design in its own right and the scalability makes it a good option for lots of clubs. The only reservation would be it being wood which might freak some out.

I'm fascinated by the wood design, for aesthetic, affordability and sustainability reasons.

Pity it's all imported though, using local responsibly harvested timber in a place like Tassie would be a big selling point.

If memory serves me correctly, the Brisbane Strikers were proposing to build a 12,000 - 15,000 capacity stadium for $15 - $18 Million back in 2004 when they applied for the HAL. Land costs excluded.

Would imagine it would now cost some $30 Million for the same thing, which is the entry point for a minimalist but functional, fit for purpose stadium.

In a resort somewhere

Awer Mabil's home ground, MCH Arena in Denmark. 11.5k capacity, built for A$17.5m in 2004. Would fit in the area reserved next to Dandenong station.

Unfortunately something like that would cost $100m here.

A couple of UK stadiums I like are both from rugby league, Warrington (15k) and St Helens (18k). Not sure how to post images, but check em out.
