Most recent Asian Cup as well.
Arnold has failed on the international stage both with the national team and with clubs he has been head coach internationally (Japan and AFC Champions League)

His tactic of passing the ball around and backward , sideway with no a single shot must stop. It was really painful to watch.  U won't see a combination play like in European team under him.

Caught out way too many times. These players are all better at club level. This possession based stuff is too slow. We have plenty of players who are fit and good on the ball. If the tactics are quick movement and linking together they'll surely create more chances. Arnie just screams out 'Ryano!' and hopes Grant can get something in. We need to start our fittest and sharpest players. The A League players and Mabil aren't that.

Last time at this stage

SA 13
Japan 13
Aus 10

The KSA game n Adelaide was the catch up which then the Saudi loss vs UAE kept us alive after our Japan loss.

Arnie’s lineups and subs are questionable. Why is Leckie starting when he’s not match fit? Why bring on Macca when we are just pumping crosses into the box?

Ange is doing well at Celtic, has won the J-League and Asian Cup.

Seems like the decision to push him out for Arnold, who has an extremely underwhelming CV, was a good one.

Arnold deserved the job with the success he got with footballers locally. He also deserves the heat coming his way for some pretty poor performances.

Third for us is fair, but I cannot stomach Saudi being better than us. They are absolute hacks and pea hearts who will mostly likely get pumped at the wc.

Our problem is hubris, we think we are better than what we are.

Results and tables don't lie.

We are where we are for a reason, excuses can be found, but in the end this is our level.

The only solutions for better performance, is better players. And that takes time.

Whoever succeeds Arnie(preferably a foreign coach, but that's just my opinion) ought to commit to trawling through A-League youth squads - heck even NPL if needs be! - in search of any diamonds in the rough(which despite it all, I'm still sure there are); that and continuing to seek out dual-nationals eligible to play for us.

At the end of the day, we need to leave no stone unturned.

Its not just about player identification.

Its about having a robust domestic competition, the larger the better.

We suffer domestically in that we don't have enough games in our National League, we have VISA players taking key positions on the field, we don't have enough clubs in our 1st Division and we don't have a NSD.

We then don't have the players pushing on to the big five leagues, at the biggest clubs

This flows on to the MNT, and I can see the same issue into the medium term with the WNT.

It isn't an issue with Arnie's game plan. It is the cattle on the park.

Probably his worst selection decision is  picking Matt Leckie, who has no current match fitness, in the front three.  He has scored only 15 goals from 68 appearances. Leckie has plenty  of other all round attributes, but converting goals isn't one of them. Again in two games, Saudi and China, we watched Leckie fail to convert goals from reasonable  chances in good positions  in the pen box.

If Leckie is one of the top three in the attacking front line, then maybe we aren't good enough to qualify for the World Cup? Both Ange and Arnie have stuck with him.

Sorry but this is the sort of whatabboutisms that drive me nuts in politics.

Not to mention there were PLENTY of people sticking the boot into Ange as well

I mean, he quit in the end because of it aha

Obviously our players are average in the grand scheme of things.
I don't think you'll find many here disputing this.
There are systemic problems at every level.

BUT

Arnie's selections, in game management and tactics have cost us vital points now.
This cannot be denied despite having all the problems listed above.

He has fallen into the familiar trap all coaches seemingly do of having players he thinks he can rely on and giving them game time over players fitter and/or in better club form.

True, but no one looks at Ange's qualifying campaign as a raging success to be fair. I mean we were a goal post away from missing out all together. So to compare both campaigns to say this one is more successful isnt the right approach.

In truth, missing out all together might be the thing we need for the long term as much as it will suck. It will incentivise FA to go after a more top level coach, teach the players that WCs are not a given and most importantly encourage us to look at our development and pathways and hopefully improve them.

Part of being a good coach is identifying who is and who isnt cut out of international compeition. Lets analyse some of Arnie’s player selections.

Grant - unfit A league hack. Had a cool mullet and mo though so must be a good player. 🙄
Behich - terribly out of form and lost all speed
Irvine - the ultimate pure hack. Not a shred of technical acumen. Couldnt even get a contract in the SPL but is the lynchpin of the midfield.
Leckie - unfit A league player played out of position as a makeshift forward
Duke - plays in a league the equivalent of conference north in England
Jeggo - bless his cotton socks but he might as well be a ghost.

So Arnie is pumping out starting XI’s who just frankly do not belong in the team or anywhere near the international set up. Its a proven theory that A league generally players cannot rise to international standard and has left behind a trail of carcasses who tried but failed.  Now lets have a look at some of the players Arnie has left out.

Karacic - in the throes of a serie B campaign
Dougall - key player for mid table championship team
Elder - one of Hull’s best and most consistent players
Mcgree - winning rave reviews for championship team
Rukavytysa - easily our most accomplished and consistent goal scoring forward outside the A league
Mooy - class is permanent
Devlin - winning rave reviews for Hearts

Now none of these players, based on raw ability or current form, would set the world on fire, however its incumbent on the NT coach to get the player selection right. That is the first rule of coaching, pick your best players who play at the highest level and are in form and fit. Has Arnold succeeded in picking his best team? The answer is clearly no. The side Arnie puts out would struggle the Phoenix let alone China’s best. Maybe he picks the above players and we still lose. Thats ok, its called trial and error, but I would bet that a team full of in form European second teir players has a better chance than a team of A league misfits and unfit hacks.

Arnold has to go. Not only did he fudge the player selection, he has the Socceroos playing the worst football I can remember. Disjointed, ugly, insipid, listless, pure undiluted hackery. With this hick in charge we are not going to qualify for the WC.

Arnies Football has never been exciting football. At SFC ,it relied on squeezing the opposition into mistakes and pouncing. It relied on clever skillful players who could punish mistakes.
At international level,Arnie Football for Australia doesnt work against more skilful opponents.Maybe Arnie knows this. But it really looks like there is no real solution when opponents are good.Just pass and hope for our players to invent something.Meanwhile the opponents are playing the waiting game on our mistakes.
Where to from here ,I dont know. But we wont be beating KSA and Japan anytime soon and if we cant beat China,Oman and Vietnam will be problematic now we are out of form.

Not being able to beat a crap team like China at home is an embarrassment.
That alone is enough to start looking for a new coach.

Probably a good time to not qualify, will make some of these boys realise its not a given. Hopefully make them more hungry or the game dies.

I get that Arnie has more points than Ange, but at least with Ange's style I could sit and watch the game for 90 mins, cant watch this crap atm. The fact leckie started tonight has made my mind up, he had two absolutely great chances too that a decent forward would bury in a heartbeat.

We have to make the league more competitive, has to be 2nd division with pro/rel if we ever want to get good.

really should have thrown the kitchen sink at Carlos Queiroz when he was available. Knows the region very well, a very very experienced coach.
