It's not exclusively a football thing. You'll see that sort of behaviour at nearly any team sport. I've seen a woman punched in the face at an AFL game. I've seen a group of blokes wearing KKK hoods at a cricket match against South Africa. Haven't been to many NRL games, but I'm sure some NSW/QLD people can insert similar stories here. Obviously, I've also seen fights at the football. I'd say it's not necessarily a sport thing either. I remember going to nightclubs and pubs when I was in my twenties and there was always bloke's itching for fight. Unfortunately there are just douchebags in the world we live in that ruin things for the rest of us.

Go to any nightclub strip in the country on a Saturday night and watch the peacocks strut. 5pm Saturday night walking down Rundle Street headed to the fringe there was a bloke losing his nut starting a fight with security guards. It was 5pm and 80% of the people on the street were families and kids walking to see a show.

It's cultural. Look at Horda hooligans, they sat in a different position at Aami and watched the Melbourne Darby. To not expect trouble at a football match is naive.

But why does football attract those types? Like I'm interested why groups of blokes name go into active then carry on like that. Like the ones booing glover why? We need David Attenborough to do a study or something

Perhaps something to do with the fact he was guilty of incitement by throwing a flare into the crowd and did not receive punishment?? Most logical people see that he deserved some punishment there. Surely.

Whether it was intentional or accidental, Glover threw a light flare into the crowd and got away with it. Any opposition fans would behaved in exactly the same way if it had happened at their ckub. MC included.

Did you go to the derby? Was there any trouble?

Like the ones booing glover why? Seriously? Booing? Naughty naughty boys!!! Maybe coz he is the opposition keeper and maybe also coz the dude pegged a flare at them fairly recently. Or maybe coz he is the worst keeper in the league and maybe the dumbest yet is protected and gets games for Australia because of who he plays for.

He threw a fucking flare into the crowd mate. And the league did nothing. Did you expect us to clap him for a good effort? He will be booed, abused and hated by us for the rest of his career. Get used to it. Although admittedly I wished the chant relating to him was about the flare and not the bucket… But clearly the intention was to put him off his game (and it probably worked).

Photos released by police of the alleged pitch invaders they wish to speak to include some men wearing clothing with marked links to active Melbourne Victory extremist groups previously shut down.According to The Herald SunThe Herald Sun, sections of the pitch invasion mob can now be revealed as members of hard-line supporter groups that have terrorised the league for more than 10 years
@ MCG You need to delve into the background of these extremist, the demographics, what the norm is to them........what their father and grandfather brainswashed them with etc. This may well help towards answering some of your questions.

Sport is passionate for viewers and when you mix alcohol with that passion when people are together you get some poor behaviour. Then you have the small number of flogs who just want to misbehave so they do. It doesn't matter what you do they will still be flogs. The flogs seem to have this view that the event is all about them so they whinge and complain about the slightest thing they don't like and tell everyone that they are speaking on behalf of the fans which they aren't. Most people would much rather that they p*issed off out of the game.

Desmond Morris did a study decades ago. Called The Football Tribes or something similar. Do you just want silent theatre goers at matches?

Why? For some perhaps status? Teens/young adults rebelling against nanny states or perhaps in some cases fullfilling a lack of "belonging" due to individualist competitive freedoms allowed by capitalism?

+xWhy does modern football pander to bland family friendly woke virtue signalling ? Sucking the passion out of the game. Why do you need to punch someone when you go to watch sport to deem it a successful night out? Read what happened to LFCs kid. Would you be happy if that was your son or daughter? Doubt it. They're just fuckwits that would shit themselves if they had to fight someone one on one. Gutless flogs.

Gutless flogs. correct, I'm all for showing passion and general fun banter amongst opponents but aggro violence is full on BS and not to be tolerated and IF I had my way if there I'd want them charged/fined and banned especially when that occurred on the street not at the game/stadium. Stuff these small minded flogs, looking at that small % of WSW ones might I add. (yer every Club have their share of cancer of trouble) At another derby at Bankwest had the wife and daughter, this flog in red black gear with his wife and small child was playing the death stars at us a number of times and starting talking shit towards us, like WTF is it with some of these flogs. Feck going to Bankwest ever again - that behaviour isn't about showing supporter passion its down right pathetic insecure childish behaviour.

+xWhy does modern football pander to bland family friendly woke virtue signalling ? Sucking the passion out of the game. It find it amusing when people use the word “Woke” as a put down. It’s not. It really isn’t. If you haven’t noticed, Australian Football is “Woke.” That’s a small part of the attraction for me.

Its a slur that would require those "for it" to explore its meaning and then reflect on their fakeness and hypocrisy. They don't do self-reflection and awareness, so of course they won't use the word to describe what they're doing. As for being inconsequential, it becomes consequential when you miss out on tertiary place, or a job or a promotion because you happen to be the best candidate but the wrong sex or race due to "equality". The "do-gooder" themselves made me laugh, the slur was deserved.

You'd also be hard pressed to call me "woke" so I REALLY don't care. I'm just having fun because if you think doing good is bad then sure, your slur makes sense. At least the word woke is made up. You can't misappropriate the word good after 5,000 years of having one meaning aha PS better qualified people through all of history have missed out on promotions to someone less deserving. If this happened to you or your kids then I'm sorry but we all get judged on something by someone and quotas literally existed in roman society so I think you're ultimately doomed to lose your battle

I think I've made it pretty clear I'm no woke warrior. the other thing is it's like people think any of this is new. All that's changed is the technology to give you tits or a beard and that you have a device in your pocket that alerts you when one child in Arkansas has a crisis of identity.

And it is because the movement is inauthentic and the people are hypocrites. Agree. I live in a part of Europe at the moment where there's a distinct absence of wokeness in every day life. It's a tremendous relief from what you cop in Australia. I choke on my food every time I turn on Australian news. Too much American crap in the Australian media is the problem. Murdoch has a lot to answer. It's at every English speaking country mostly but also at other westernized countries, but far more moderate. You turn on the CNN, BBC these days and you'll vomit. Much like our ABC. Thanks the heads up Tucker. I try to get the best news from inforwars, OAN and Fox. No narrative there, just straight facts. "I live in a part of Europe at the moment where there's a distinct absence of wokeness in every day life. It's a tremendous relief from what you cop in Australia." PSG
Hahahaha someone should tell our dear friend that a mountain village in Turkmenistan isnt "really" a standard part of Europe. Despite the usual fascist right wing minorities the rest of the continent is very much about respect for other people..... the 1940s and 50s are OVER.

Throwing up in front of women wasn't a good look for a young bloke.

Get out of your theia Aglaia's front room in Koukaki (if you are indeed in Greece) and go out and speak to the rest of the country..... its NOT the 50s anymore Toto....

I said it was a relief not to be exposed to such wokeness as a compliment. You think the symbolism of being woke is progressive or good lol? Stop turning it around to some imaginary comments I supposed to have made and get rid of that massive chip on your shoulder. Greece is an incredibly nice country and I have fantastic Greek friends and work colleagues to make it even better. 5 months here now and my missus and I couldn't be happier.

What if I told you I was referring to Greece? They seem to be much better here than 'youz' Greeks in Melbourne. ROFL I would be extremely embarrassed and ashamed for the Greeks you interact with on a daily basis Paulie... I would also be disgusted that you are trying to portray such a beautiful country and progressive, friendly people as the backward conservative neanderthals you want them to be.... Get out of your theia Aglaia's front room in Koukaki (if you are indeed in Greece) and go out and speak to the rest of the country..... its NOT the 50s anymore Toto.... It was you that mentioned something derogative you donkey a mountain village in Turkmenistan This is not SM Hellas we're talking about.
Now now Paulie, don't get your knickers in a knot.... If you want to learn Greek words to try on your "fantastic Greek friends and work colleagues" why dont you google translate some phrases like: "tinpot effnik Greek club" "pumpkin seed eaters" "a club called Hellas doesnt "fit" in our society" Machine Gun Con at it again What did your imaginary Greek "friends" think of your xenophobia Paulie? Ask them what they think of ELLAS MELVOURNIS and how you are glad we are not allowed to be in your plastic ponzi league. Have fun. Top 6 play-offs and bottom 6 play-offs is not ponzi?...ROFL to a chaotic league. Every 2nd Greek you meet knows someone or has a friend that knows someone, who's living in Melbourne. I kid you not. And they don't think very much of 'youz' in Melbourne. I didn't have to ask. Shut up mate If you prefer to hear just from the idiosyncratic Anzac hater Mono, go right ahead.

It’s not. It really isn’t. If you haven’t noticed, Australian Football is “Woke.” That’s a small part of the attraction for me. It is. It really is. I had no intentions to give you a heads up on anything Munzie, what I said was my opinion as a discussion piece with someone else. I'm not interested by some of the media you mention either......but at least they don't cancel opinion to an extent like the woke others!

Tend to agree that flogs are attracted to football. In small numbers yes. People saying look over there are avoiding the issue. There are dickheads at the NRL and the AFL but they ain't wearing all black, organised and looking for trouble like wannabe ultra wankers. More isolated incidents.

It's just schoolboy fantasies, like going to a Harry Potter convention and dressing up, in this case, they are living out their fantasy of being a hard core ultra. When they turn 35 or so, they might grow out of it.

ill note it is certainly not just 'football' and it isnt even just at a professional level ive seen parents at local tennis, AFL and football punch on with each other, abuse the ref with language you should not use around kids, and lose it at other kids at young as 12 years old for not playing well ive even seen shit behaviour at athletics and swimming which are shit sports but that is what being competitive is as times...i guess However, with all that said football is one of the few sports in the world were your team can dominate a game and still lose - it is incredibly emotional and can be incredibly frustrating - fans often bring a lot of energy and passion when things aren't going their way can channel that into rage it is a sport where banter is 'part of the culture' no so much in Australia becuz the competition is shit but if you watch any fan channel it is literally mega phone scream from the roof tops when you win and hand your head in shame if you lose....
these Kangaroos can play football - Ange P. (Intercontinental WC Play-offs 2017)

Every sport has its flogs but not every sport has exposure to the mass's like football does OS let alone the small amount it gets here. Where there is crowd/s there is always those who are not there for the actual specticle but to hang amoungst each other, drink be loud and be out of out arseholes. Are any of these flogs actually/really into the football game they attend ? Like jumping up and down, screaming amongst each other, shirts off, seriously how do they keep up watching a game through its phase's of play only when something occurs do they jump scream to carry on like flogging DH's. Tribalism is great but its always these flogs who take it past the boindaries for what ? macho man crap ? Just the recently played derby at Bankwest, my 18yr old daighters boyfriend and mate we're lined up and beaten up near parra station - they didn't do anything but that they we're far behind the Cove mob just 2 of them so easy pickings by the flogs. Bruised up, lost mobile they ran for safety. F T B sounds close to the ground down there with the MV support base, seriously how many of them are there just for the social side/piss and muck racking if you don't mind ?

Off topic but one of my best Football mates came from Greece in his early teens with his family...
AnyWho, we where playing a local game and a bit of a grudge match.... 20 minutes in my mate gets sent off along with a player on the other side for fighting... half time we said what happened... and I quote and this cracked me up... he said he called me a pommie C.... and we said but you are a C on the field... and he replied but I am not a pommie....
KInda like MSC was posting... the Greeks are far from being backwards and lets be fair they are where democracy started... my mate was more offended at being called a pommie that he was at being called a C...
Sorry off topic...

The poor Ities where living in huts when the Greeks had to establish cities on the 'ol boot and show them how to make olive oil, bread, wine and cheese. The Portuguese had to discover America so they could cook passata with their tomatoes from the "new world" and Marco Polo outright stole noodles from the Chinese..... to "invent" pasta. I must say, you buggers did get pretty good at making the most of what you were taught. hahahahahahahahaah

Thread about flogs in football evolves into a who's food is better thread. Wasn't expected that. I like Greek food and Italian food. Both delicious. Although I do wish more Greek places offered pork souvlaki. Why is it always lamb here. What's wrong with our Aussie pigs?

Although I do wish more Greek places offered pork souvlaki. Why is it always lamb here. What's wrong with our Aussie pigs? Is there any better encapsulation of strayan sokkah? For what it’s worth, my 2c on the actual topic at hand. firstly, this sport is a global platform, and therefor its fan culture is relatively international/global. so that fact that the subculture developed somewhere meant that it was able to spread everywhere, ie “The English disease” etc. obviously there were historic/cultural reasons why it developed, but in reality there doesn’t need to be a “reason” any more than there’s a reason why people graffiti trains. it has nothing to do with the trains themselves, but the subculture now exists in affiliation to train systems around the world as a concept, and will always be taken up by a new generation of youth attempting to emulate those who came before them because it seems cool to them. some will quickly grow out of it, others never will. for me, you’ll ever truly rid the sport of hooliganism just as you’re unlikely to ever to completely rid railway infrastructure of graffiti, all you can do is manage it and keep it to as low a level as possible.
As a side note, in my personal opinion we do a poor job of managing it in this country. most people in Australia either fit into the category of those who grossly overstate the potential for trouble (a riot could start at any place, at any time and for any reason at any sokkah game), or those who understate it (they think it’s a media beat up, or that “we don’t have hooligans in Australia that’s only in Europe”) etc etc. police are over zealous, but are disorganised, inconsistent and have no idea how to take effective preemptive action. Many don’t even know what a soccer hooligan is, they just see “sokkah supporter being rowdy = hooligan”

Interesting take mate and in regards to you mentioning the "English disease" I was living in Greece at the time of the Hasel riot in 85 and remember the media being almost shocked when a touring mob of Dutch supporters where arrested for throwing oranges with razor-blades in them at Greek fans in Athens... Headline that sticks out in my memory was something along the line of "English disease? ... how did the Dutch catch it?" We are certainly not alone in the world in having football hooliganism problems in this country....... only difference is that instead of "the English disease" here it was always "Effnik Sockah"

Spent my first 2 months in Greece eating at some restaurant, every night. Now it's only 2 - 3 times a week. So I can say with some authority I was blown away by the variety and delicious food. Italian food is quality of the highest order however.

I'll be here for a while. Need to learn more than 5 words however. My favourite food in Brazil was picanha. Those Brazilians (and Argentinians) sure know how to cook up meat. Great food all over the world.

Then go to the San Siro and watch wild massive ultras going off. Pavlos good your soaking in the greek way haha Deep into it mate. Love the country and I hope it never changes. I'll be here for a while. Need to learn more than 5 words however. My favourite food in Brazil was picanha. Those Brazilians (and Argentinians) sure know how to cook up meat. Great food all over the world. mate the latinos and surrounds sure cook meat superb ! I know and eaten the above and the portugese are famous for espetada (again quality rump/sirloin) I cook this at home many times with my inlaw relos. My ongoing travels to Chile and Mexico for biz rank right up there with those mentioned above. The euros won't change their dna but sadly getting poorer, good learn the lingo hahaha Flogs good and bad eat so damn well we got to get back on topic !

+xThread about flogs in football evolves into a who's food is better thread. Wasn't expected that. I like Greek food and Italian food. Both delicious. Although I do wish more Greek places offered pork souvlaki. Why is it always lamb here. What's wrong with our Aussie pigs? Don't even get me started on lettuce in a Gyro.... hahahahahahah

Though I don't tar them all as such - its always the small %. Same applies for SU58 god luv the club, I've been to quite a few away games and one at Christie not long ago that again a few of those flogs ruin it for the well behaved ones from both sides. 1 smoking 1 bringing a slab or 2 in, then what happens. Mind you we see similar behaviour at the big grounds in Al/ALM I've gone to over the many years. Where is the line drawn, you can't stamp this out completely unfortunately.

+xI refer you to Frankfurt "fans" in Naples now Feel free to piss off to the cricket and stand there with bogans sinking cans dishing out racist abuse all day before bashing people in the car park when they’re not looking 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️

Seeing the scenes in Napoli, its obvious that football has a cultural problem when it comes to fan hooliganism even though they represent small minority of fans it just gives everyone else a bad name for egg ball code fans to call out on.
Frustrating.

+xEurope (and the western world) is a very angry place right now Agreed of course, but imo these scenes can’t be equated with the current political/social situation. If anything these sorts of incidents are less common today in italy than they have been for 50 years. Even 15-20 years ago they were an almost weekly occurrence at some clubs

It's always funny actually. Been watching some footage. Large groups of these hoodie cladded tough guys charge a police line with numbers of like 200-30 in their favour, get within a metre of the cops, slow down, pick up some random debris and throw it limply at them.
