Both these rumours have been doing the rounds at the moment. Both look good, so I'd be happy with either.

It's probably something else entirely. But of those two options... AL for Canberra or whatever they call themselves these days are conspicuously absent from the NSD EOI list.......

Auckland!!! Get fucked.

#nixout

What a fucking joke.

And Canberra will be a disaster on par with WU and Macarthur. If you think crowds for those 2 are dire wait until Canberra gets up and running.

NZ? NZ?

You have to be kidding me.

Genuine question - what benefit to NZ sides bring to us? Surely it can't be that much money.

And there you go.  Tell me with a straight face there will be pro rel when teams are paying $25 million for a license.

It won’t come cheap. Townsend confirmed the APL would be asking for expansion fees of about $25 million for new franchises, which is in line with recent club sales and the valuation of the whole league by Silver Lake’s $140 million private equity deal for a 33 per cent stake in the competition. It would also provide a much-needed boost to APL coffers. A mix of local and international investors is APL’s preference, Townsend said.

Both cities have been designated “preferred market status” by the APL.

Auckland over a Tasmanian!

Cannot for the life me understand this fixation with Auckland.

Tasmania would be a colossal failure. Imagine playing out of monster AFL grounds with only 3k attending. Have you watched WU when they play games in Ballarat and Tasmania? Absolute crickets.

TASMANIA WILL NEVER EVER WORK

(unless they build their own boutique rectangular stadium)

Auckland is an inspired choice. A super derby with Wellington is an intriguing prospect, they could easily get crowds of 30k+ packed into Eden, or sell out Sky stadium. Tasmania wouldn’t even get 3k.

Not hard to imagine at all.  Western United have been doing this for 3 years.

Auckland is an inspired choice.

Maybe.
It may be the only way that NZ will ever get enough traction to start its own league.  A single entity playing in a foreign competition will never provide the impetus.  If competition builds there, then there is fair chance you could build a competition there.

Unpopular opinion:

this hastens p and r with the caveat that liscensed clubs probably get protection from dropping below the second division and we will probably have some weird rules protecting nz

you will never have p and r before you have two divisions of 16 clubs and this probably gets us there within 5 years

Next two years there will be a ridiculous increase in opportunites for young aussie footballers. This is unambiguously good news imo

Respectfully this is terrible take. No way in the world is this good news for pro rel.

I half believe they're setting up the NST for failure.

They're definitely heading more down the MLS route.

$25 million for licenses this time, $30 million for the next round?

I guess your worry is that they will require promotion candidates to pay a liscense fee?

i doubt it personally

No that's not it at all. My worry, and my expectation is, no owner would agree to a pro / rel model where they could lose their entire investment. Let's face facts, if a big club is relegated it will likely fold or be gutted and sold on for a nominal fee and exist as a NST team in name only.

Now you can say they can force pro / rel and they can but the owners will not let that happen.

The APL have looked at the Dolphins success and thought, let's have some of that.

The best thing to do would have been run the NST and promote the winner for the next 4 years to get to 16 teams. That would have been hands down the best way to get to 16. No relegation until 16 teams are reached and then in year 5 away we go.

So picture this: suppose next year there are 2-3 teams getting bigger crowds than the worst a league clubs. With preston in the nst and wun/macarthur in the top league that is all but gauranteed

there is a big push from fans for promotion and relegation to happen in year one.

James Johnson and dt put cold water on it saying the nst is still getting established. Years 2 and 3 the same things happen and the nst has expanded to 16 clubs. There is no longer that excise and there has been 3 years in a row where the best nst teams outperform the worst a league clubs.

3 years of political pressure from fans when the fa, rather than the apl or the clubs, has the final say will force some compromise

If the apl and the fa were a single organization then id share your cynicism. But I dont see how you avoid p and r if the top nst teams outperform some a league clubs several years in a row

Put another away, the over performance of preston and the underperformance of wun/macarthur as well as the fa separating from the a league and forcing the nst to be pro from day one and 16 teams from year three means that p and r is all but gauranteed

it will no doubt be a weird hybrid system with inequitable protections for some clubs, but jt will happen imo

also, the a league will have 100 mil in their coffers to help smooth over any initial rocky seas from p and r

Muz, forget it its never gonna happen.

look good luck to them.......
We are never gonna have a eco friendly system whilst we have this league at the top and divide of the below, it was a given since its start that niavely I had hoped one day this could be overcome but never to be.
So be it, roosty is right Tas will never work as a franchise Club and bugger these large stads might I add, its a struggle as it is right now.
We we're never gonna fill these large grounds but for the few big games, football here is suited to the 10/20k grounds at most.
A Tas Club throwing their hat in the ring for the NST is whats needed there so as to grow the game/presence from ground up and would work as long as they have the funds.

So how are the crowds gonna be when Auckland play WU or Bulls let alone the other lesser lights.
Canbra, now that is another prob as they mentioned due to the current ALW formed down there with Canbra United, so they are going to have 2 Canbra entities, they are working together to resolve the issues, haha like Maccas/KFC's.....we have done our population studies.
Another complication due to this competiton.
Seriously this is getting as good as the Gov layers upon layers we have in every State down to local councils.

We're spiralling deeper down the rabbit hole, please NST get up running and work, the game and real supporters need this big time.

Im a little baffled by this, in one way its great for the game but in the other way what does it mean for the NSD especially teams coming those markets? The a-league expansion looks bringing in new entities whilst the NSD is focused more on helping existing teams make the jump into the top flight.

I think there needs to be a blueprint on not only expansion but also on promotion and relegation and how this will be achieved in the future, the FA need to show some leadership with this in the future once the NSD comes in next year.

Either way im happy for Canberra, I think an Tasmanian team would have been more interesting than helping NZ football out in my opinion.
