Impossible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PqgcG4X_SYThat video is a good example of their target audience and they are clueless on how the game actually works lol no chance.

Oh and I laughed. Why are abc promoting that dross. Afl funded or government funded? Cash for comments? What did Sarah Ferguson mean at the end that she wasn’t sure everyone watching that knew what the A stood for? Arseholes making her report such trash? 😂

God not again. They try this crap every decade or so. Been trying since at least the 80s to sell the game overseas... how's that worked out do you think? They'll keep throwing money at it. There were a tonne of American influencers at AFL matches this season, made F all impact.

Pie in the sky stuff. Only insight here is that the government broadcaster sees AFL as a pillar of Australian culture.

They struggle to sell it outside of AFL heartland even in Australia. It's a very niche sport even in Sydney, football is far bigger than AFL in Sydney.

With all respect I believe that's a myth GWS and Sydney even gold coast are getting quite good crowds comparable to Nrl more then the a league. We used to be head to head with them in attendance but now they have left us in the dust

MCG not hard to outsell APL the last number of years as you know. When you have the $$$ afl have and consistancy not that hard as well. Sure their crowds are a pass I guess - only 2 clubs, nrl has 9 odd clubs in sydneytown. We're no where like Melb re filling out grounds week in week out history shows that, its difficult/strange to explain the polar opposites our cities are. Yet nrl is doing very well for you wouldn't see any press like we do but a negative perspective. They might be doing well from your end BUT I hardly notice it in our press, hardly hear anything re that club in our west just know bit of the swans due to city based and I can count on one hand friends who are interested so buggered if I know where those crowds come from lol...... Ex pat Vics are a plenty, I think they conned/bought a % of the west support as they do freebies galore. I think its just a different day out for many here. It is niche here as robbos mentioned I tend to agree. Think they talk it up typically.

I think it would be very interesting if the AFL gained real momentum in the US. AFL is all about athleticism, so I could totally see African Americans absolutely dominating Aussies if they played the sport professionally.

thinking basketball etc yes. What they'd need to work on is gas in the tank. Most of their codes have breaks and nothing like the size of the weird afl oval ground size.

AFL should try and compete with league and union in our own backyard before trying to jump across the pond

You are 100% assured of that remaining purely hypothetical. AFL is going absolutely nowhere.

+xso I could totally see African Americans absolutely dominating Aussies if they played the sport professionally. You already have people who have never played the game before almost instantly becoming professionals - from US, Ireland and code hoppers I cannot think of any sport in the world that can happen. In the women's it's even worse

In the women's it's even worse even a "niche sport" in a population of 300 million people can generate a playing pool in the thousands.... AFL is pushing the overseas market hard in US and Europe.... who knows what the end results could look like. On the flip side they have been trying for years though so I wouldnt think it will ever go anywhere.

The reality is that the only countries that have large oval venues suitable for AFL are those that play cricket. Limits the countries quite a bit. You might find places that are willing to setup some basic suburban grounds but that's about the extent of it.
