Hi Guys, Sorry I have been away for a bit but just to give you an update, we are presently negotiating with a few people that seem to be fitting the criteria so its all looking hopefull at the moment. In response to Geust and Charon in wanting to know what skills , basically I am no expert in the game other than your usual social club soccer but I do see a problem with the differences in our sport technically compared to overseas nations. I stumbled upon another forum at sbs which was addressinfg a similar topic and I found one of the posts by "decentric" seems to be on the right wavelength. You can read the post here : http://www21.sbs.com.au/wgforum/viewtopic.php?t=102156One of the quotes : "I also teach specific and incremental dribbling and turning techniques. The standard inside of the foot, followed by the outside of the foot body swerve, the Matthews cut, the Cruyff cut and a simplified version of the Zidane 360 are the first techniques I teach. I use Brazilian Soccer Schools DVDs to impart more advanced dribbling and turning with the ball techniques of varying complexity. The Brazilians use over the ball sideways technique a lot, which is rarely used in context in England or Australia, or even on the continent. One of the state female players has an array of effective skills she has learnt from a Manchester United DVD which she is going to lend me. All these techniques need to be learnt slowly, then sped up still in isolation from other players. When players can do them at a quicker rate, the next step is to do them with the head up. Finally being able to practise them with an opponent to gauge effective distancing is recommended. When this is done repetitively and successfully, a technique has been transferred to a skill, according to FFA vernacular." You can read more at the above link but the above quote highlites some of the skills we are searching for and assume there would be other skills no doubt . Perhaps we need to grab one of those brazillian dvd's and go from there.

Hey Mot, with regard your original request for someone to teach....let's call them advanced skills. Are you seeking someone to teach 'moves', the ball mastery stuff with flicks 'n tricks? And I don't mean those terms in a derogatory manner, hell I grew up when 'a turn meant nothing more than a turn of speed. If that is what you are after there is a very well put together DVD set recently produced by the coaching group previously licensed by Football NSW.

Back to the topic at hand...
I think the major problem in Australian youth is the fact that we DO have fathers who never played at least semi professionally teaching 6-10 year olds bad habits that they themselves picked up. for instance, from the age of 10 kids should be nearly finished learning the needed football skills - moving the ball when you recieve it, use of both feet, even simply the ability to create enough space to say put in a cross or have a shot. Say im Craig Foster if u will, but if you wonder why we have only made the world cup twice ever, it has to be brought all the way down to the ground. 8-[

What type of skills you need taught. Most the guys here have played or coached and know some drills and that way it won't cost you any $$$$$!

442 forums doesn't seem to be a good place to find a skills coach.

G/day, I think it would be compelling of me to clarify the original request here so we don't get side tracked in that it was a request for a "skills" coach rather than a "coach" per.. say . We currently do obtain the services of an excellent coach that is teaching the kids some of the basic aspects of the the game which more than covers their ongoing understanding for their age in terms of basic skills and tactics etc. The guy we would be looking for is one that has the ability to provide some extra special skills and/or drills with skills that they may perhaps already possess themselves. The kids at this age are eager to learn new things and it is the best time for them to develop some of these skills. The sport is non completive here for them until the age of ten ( in Europe I believe it is eleven or twelve ? ) and this is basically to detract the kids from any competitive influences that may slow down their development, but you try telling a kid that its ok to lose so long as your having fun and learning ! they all want to win and they will all play in a way that suits them in order to win which may not necessarily be the correct way if you know what I mean.
A brilliant player may have a gift which he can share to youth but because he may not make a brilliant manager or coach his talents are left on the park. The problem with it is that as soon a high level player decides to do something for youth its usually in the form of an academy which then it evolves into a business with $$$ which then loses its appeal to be individualised or personalised.
By the way we are still looking for a skills coach

That is true to a very minor extent.

My son had a coach who apparently played in the NFL. He'd put shit on his best players if they made a mistake and never gave positive feedback to the most competant players. Somehow my boy made it through that season and is still playing. You need to be very careful about who you take on as a coach, be sure that he has some quals and experience. Players don't always make good coaches at any level.

in his own mind...he was. He used garbage on how played ac milan reserves, i could tell he was full of shit from the get go. I think he just lied on resume to get the nod.
In the interview with arsene wenger in the latest 442 rag, they mention that himself and alex ferguson disnt set the world alight as players, but at least they played at a high level.

Quote:Just because a person has played at a relatively high standard, does not guarantee that they can coach, especially kids!!
Also, paying for coaching does not guarantee that the level or standard of coaching you receive is any better than a parent with a good understanding of the sport can provide.
I wish you luck in your search and hope you find what you are looking for. i can vouch for this man.. The shittest coach i ever had was apparently a brilliant player.
