For Gyfox:

Quote:
Direct Free Kick

A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following seven offences in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:

• kicks or attempts to kick an opponent

• trips or attempts to trip an opponent

• jumps at an opponent

• charges an opponent

• strikes or attempts to strike an opponent

• pushes an opponent

• tackles an opponent

A direct free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following three offences:

• holds an opponent

• spits at an opponent

handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area)

A direct free kick is taken from the place where the offence occurred

(see Law 13 – Position of Free Kick).

Penalty Kick

A penalty kick is awarded if any of the above ten offences is committed by a player inside his own penalty area, irrespective of the position of the ball, provided it is in play.

Quote:
Sending-off offences

A player, substitute or substituted player is sent off if he commits any of the following seven offences:

• serious foul play

• violent conduct

• spitting at an opponent or any other person

• denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area)

• denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick

• using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures

• receiving a second caution in the same match

Quote:
Handling the ball

Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with his hand or arm. The referee must take the following into consideration:

the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)

the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)

the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an infringement

• touching the ball with an object held in the hand (clothing, shinguard, etc.) counts as an infringement

• hitting the ball with a thrown object (boot, shinguard, etc.) counts as an infringement

After re reading the Laws of the Game I am now no longer sure if Kewell's incident was even a penalty.

It also does confirm that Cahill did not give away a penalty.

The thing about football - the important thing about football - is its not just about football.

Sour grapes from Serbia. That was never a hand ball, and they know it.

They deserved to miss out on the 16.

should just stfu about the penalty. we had plenty of chances and shouldve been up 3-0 in the first half. i am extremely bummed coz we only needed a goal to progress. and tbh i cried after the match, but thats just passion. but shit happens in football. we gotta turn our attention the euros and restore some national pride. what i hate tho is when people who didnt watch the match, only saw the result, jump to conclusions about what went on. they dont know that we dominated for the most part, and i ended up copping so much shit from school today from such people.

How the hell could anyone call that a handball, FIFA even reminded the referees at the start of the world cup that ball to hand incidents inside three feet were not to be given as free kicks. All those wanting to call it a handball are the same ones that want to kick the soceroos and drag them down no matter what the circumstances are, yeah just like you liverpool. Serbia got all the soft free kicks in this game. I can honestly say that if the shoe was on the other foot i would never have expected to get a penalty for that. Get a life you fucking eurosnobs.

They certainly got a few soft free kicks. I thought they would have complained more about the offside than the hand ball as I thought that was very close and they only showed one reply. It was almost like we have a reputation for foul play. Mmmm yeah maybe we do. We also should have a reputation for not chucking ourselves on the ground when ever someone comes near us but that also didn't seem to sway the ref and we didn't get some free kicks I thought could have gone our way. Lucas started to show a bit of it when he got whacked (accidently) in the back off the head and fell down holding his face. You're a danger to yourself and a burden to others. Or is he? Will it take a change in our football culture so that we do fall down and milk free kicks. Until then are we some niave football back water that will never make the semis? F!@^( hope not.
And why the hell did he take Krasic off? Maybe your tactics didn't go as you'd hoped so you might like to blame someone else?

Are they blind. That was not a handball at all. He didn't even have his face in the direction of the ball let alone his eyes and movement toward. WTF.

The off sides were close but correct.

The ref. decisions agaisnt us tonight were still very harsh, in fact we couldn't tackle at times because that is a free kick!?

If anyone was treated harshly its us not them. Lucky they didn't get a red for the studs up late tackle on Wilkshire. It would have been red for us not dought.

I'm sorry, but stop diving now. The games already over.

There was no basis for the Cahill incident to be called handball.

Handling the ball
Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with his hand or arm. The referee must take the following into consideration:
• the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)

• touching the ball with an object held in the hand (clothing, shinguard, etc.) counts as an infringement
• hitting the ball with a thrown object (boot, shinguard, etc.) counts as an infringement

Firstly he made no play at the ball with his arm ie contact was not deliberate and secondly the distance from his opponent was such that it was "unexpected ball". the ball did make contact with his arm but that does not constitute a foul unless the contact was deliberate. No competent referee would call it as a foul.

You really should read the Laws of the Game. If Kewell's was handball and it stopped a certain goal then the referee has no option but to issue a red card. A yellow card is not an option for him.

It was clearly not handball. One of the factors that the referee is required to take into account is the distance from the strike of the ball to the hand/arm. In this case in was fractions of a second and therefore was ball to hand.
