Not saying I don't agree with you but, if the identities they are associating with are known criminal identities it will potentially damage the clubs 'brand'. I would assume that it would be a standard clause within the contract that the player must not knowingly damage the clubs (and AFL's) brand.

That would be at the discretion of the club and thus I think probably too open to interpretation. There would be a clause regarding brushes with the law and/or bringing the game into disrepute but that would be the extent of it.

That doesn't change that they SHOULD NOT BE COUNTED in membership sales.

Do you have any proof that they are? I see lots of people on here claiming it, but I've never seen any hard evidence that it's a fact.

How else could Collingwood have 80,000+ members and still fail to sell out games?

They do have a lot of fans across the country, not just in Melbourne. I think you'll find whenever they play interstate, there's always a higher crowd than average for the team they're playing against. Plus there's probably a large amount of smaller game memberships.

Either way, that's not hard evidence. It's worth noting that on their membership packages page, Pet Memberships aren't even listed as a package. They're listed under add-ons, alongside merchandise, etc. Hardly seems like something they'd count.

Of course they are not counted - you'd have to be a dill to honestly believe it.

As you say, they are sold as a merchandising items.

The AFL publishes a full annual report every year - very easy for people to check the section on memberships.

Update on the Murray Newman trial:
Quote:

Eagle Murray Newman claims he was scared when he hit man

West Coast Eagles footballer Murray Newman claims he was scared and intimidated by a love rival in the moments before he punched him, breaking his jaw.

Mr Newman is on trial in the Perth District Court accused of causing grievous bodily harm to Brett Marris, then aged 20, in November last year.

Giving evidence to the jury on Tuesday, Mr Newman claimed that on the night of the fight, he did not deliberately seek out Mr Marris to exact revenge for sleeping with his girlfriend when they were on a break.

But he had "brushed shoulders" with Mr Marris as he left the Library nightclub in Northbridge.

Supported by teammates including Nic Naitanui, Josh Kennedy and Sharrod Wellingham, Mr Newman said he had feared for his own safety from the larger Mr Marris, who was with a friend.

"I felt scared because they could turn against me," Mr Newman said.

According to his evidence, Mr Newman was grabbed around the throat by Mr Marris - which is when he hit out to defend himself.

Defence lawyer David Grace QC told the jury they should question the reliability of Mr Marris' evidence, while saying threatening Facebook messages the footballer had sent the victim before the alleged assault were "immature".

Weeks of threats from Mr Newman on Facebook included messages such as: "start digging a grave".

Mr Newman also called Mr Marris a "little girl" and asked why he did not want to meet "for a crack".

In another message, Mr Newman said: "I won't rest til you ey (sic) hurt."

In his closing address, prosecutor Michael Perrella said Mr Newman's claims of self-defence were a "complete red-herring", and questioned why he not mentioned being grabbed by the throat to the police.

"It is an attempt to portray himself as the victim to take your focus away from the fact that he was the aggressor," Mr Perrella said.

The trial continues.

Yeah that must've really f*cking scary when you and 3 teammates were facing those 2 guys. I imagine your 201 cm, 109kg Fijian mate was absolutely shitting himself.

The list of the top 50 sports programmes on Foxtel in 2013 is now out:

http://www.tvtonight.com.au/2013/12/pay-tv-2013-top-50-sports-shows.html

I put this up on the Fox sports thread, but I thought I'd copy here as well because the results would be of interest to AFL fans.

As one post says: That’s pretty remarkable that 5 of the top 12 are AFL games that Foxtel simply simulcast.

AFL - 19
Cricket - 13
RL - 12
RU - 4
Soccer - 2 (including the highest ranking show)

The Swans got in there 7 times, which seems a fair effort.
Carlton: 6
Essendon: 5
Storm: 5
Collingwood: 4

What exactly is a "stragetic partnership reserve" should they rename that "club bias fund"?

Additional grants to clubs would all be categorised under the "payments to clubs" expense category, which hit $200 mill in 2012, well above basic payment of $10 mill per club.

The strategic partnership reserve could take any number of forms, including private-public partnerships with 3 levels of government to improve infrastructure.

that would depend on whether it's part of a strategic partnership
some facilities, the AFL can invest in directly
with others, for example facilities owned by government, it must work in partnership with government

That's because it's on eof the very, very few sporting bodies which operates under a salary cap and has all finances declared to it.

The NFL releases one as well. And it makes far more sense than the drivel spreadsheet you posted.

This is an interesting article on what Australians were googling the past year:
http://www.news.com.au/technology/what-do-australians-search-for-on-google/story-e6frfrnr-1226786762352

Under 15, there's a comparison of the AFL vs NRL.

This is what it says:

15. BATTLE OF THE BRUTES
Which Australian footy code is officially the most popular? The AFL. By a mile. Before you go off your rocker, soccer fans, even "football" didn't come close. We checked.

Yeah, wouldn't want to put "soccer" and "Football" on that graph and show the inverse relationship to trends in AFL searches.

2014 membership figures (with comparisons from one year ago)

Notable comparisons:
Adelaide up by 10,000
Port up by 19,000 (no doubt, effect of Adelaide Oval move, as predicted)
Essendon up nearly 7,000
Geelong up 6,000
GWS down 1,000
Hawthorn up 7,000 (on already huge membership numbers)
Melbourne up 3,000
North up 4,000
Richmond up nearly 14,000 on already huge membership numbers
Sydney up nearly 3,000
even the doggies up 2,000 following 3 poor season
Gold Coast being up by 1,500 is also worthy of mention (only 2,800 behind Brisbane)

total AFL memberships up by 150,000 to this point in time compared to last season - big move in anybody's language
750,000 memberships looks a real possibility

West Coast Eagles record an operating surplus of $4.1 mill
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-01-11/eagles-soar-offfield

That's after allowing for a royalty payment to the WAFC of $2.9 mill and rent of $3.5 mill (also paid to the WAFC).

The club also registered a record membership level of 59,009, up from 57,478 in 2012.

An interesting prospectus from the Croatian knights:

they are attempting to build the very first Australian Football oval in Easter Europe.

It's a reminder of the difficulty enthusiasts face in other parts of the world in playing the great Australian game.

that's $7,300
Europeans often use the stop where we use the comma and the comma where we use the decimal point
so it's not a massive amount of money, but for a new amateur sport with zero resources
it's a big step
