THE AFL has recorded a 400 per cent increase in positive tests for illicit drugs.

Twenty six AFL players tested positive to illicit substances in 2012, a rise from six the previous year.

AFL medical director Dr Peter Harcourt said cocaine was the drug that players most often tested positive for.

Three AFL players are now on their second strike.

The league has also closed the self-reporting loophole, with players now permitted to self-report illicit drug use only once in their career.

There had been fears players were self-reporting drug use repeatedly as a way to dodge drug strikes.

These tests are for illegal drugs such as amphetamines, not performance enhancing drugs.

The AFL is today releasing the latest drug testing results and updating fans on the work of the illicit drugs working group, formed after a summit on February 1 prompted by Collingwood president Gary Pert's warning of "volcanic" behaviour by players.

The contentions three-strikes policy is set to remain but clubs will have more freedom to target test their own players.

The AFL carried out more tests in 2012 - 1979 up from 1489 - but the percentage of failure still increased from .4 per cent to 1.31 per cent.

The failed test percentage is the worst since the second year of testing (2006).

AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou and AFLPA boss Matt Finnis both described the results as disappointing.

"The rise in detections in 2012 reflects both an increase in the number and effectiveness of target tests conducted as well as the well-documented jump in illicit drug availability and use in the broader community,'' Demetriou said.

''The AFL playing group largely falls within the high-risk 18-30 male age group and individual players are not immune to peer group pressure and poor decision making.

"However, the use of illicit drugs in the AFL playing group remains substantially lower compared with the same age group of males in the wider community.''

None of the 26 positive tests in 2012 was recorded on match days.

The AFL announced several changes to its illicit drugs policy today:

- Players will now only be able to self-report illicit drug use once in their AFL career, closing a potential loophole.

- Clubs will be able to request target testing of their players.

- There will be an overall increase in target testing.

- There will also be an increase in hair testing during the off-season, when there is an increased risk of illicit drug use.

MORE TO COME

Good to see the message is getting through and yet the AFL still defend the 3 strike policy, start banning players for 1 strike and you might start to see some improvement.

Education does not work, if it did no one would take the stuff whether you played AFL or not. Take away their 200k to 400k wages and then the message may get through.

It is not good enough just to say well it is a community issue, that is a cop out.

It is not just AFL, football, Rugby and the other sports should have a 1 strike and you are out policy, simple then you will see some action.

It will not improve when you know your chances of getting caught are already low and then you have 3 chances on top of that.

By the way I have always supported North Melbourne, but just have a passing interest these days, as I prefer the A-League and do not like the way AFL has treated football and cannot stand the AFL media (bar a couple such as Caroline Wilson who actually have the guts to say how it is). They play a good brand of honest football and always have, the shinboner spirit, I like that in teams I support.

A North Melbourne fan who enjoys Caroline Wilson? That will just about do me. She has continually made unfair and factually incorrect statements about your club in recent years, especially aimed at James Brayshaw, who whether you like him or not, is doing a pretty impressive job.

I agree with you.

I don't know why people have a problem with the AFL's three strikes policy.

It seems an enlightened policy to me, and other sports agree by having copied it.

I honestly don't get the AFL drugs system. You get caught taking illegal drugs three times and you're in trouble, but twice is perfectly fine. They're professional athletes, as a professional athlete they shouldn't be talkie illicit drugs. It's part of their contract FFS.

[/quote]

James is doing a impressive job, you reckon. I reckon we would have been better off in the Gold Coast than playing games in some half built park in Tasmania where no one cares. That AFL money sweater would have been great for the club and they should have moved to the Gold Coast.

Before you give me a membership update, tell me how many are 1 game memberships to boast that number?. James became president in 2007, when our home game average was 28,077 and in 2013 we are currently averaging 21,826. The growth has been outstanding.

I do not see a premiership and we keep losing finals by 100 points, not his job but he put the coach in.

Are they better off financially, well as long as the AFL wants to keep them alive, from the notes to the financial accounts 31/10/12:

"The financial report has been prepared on the basis that the Company is a going concern.
Notwithstanding the fact that the Company has positive net assets of $7,135,723 (2011: $6,447,893), the Company has a net current liability position of $7,921,910 (2011: $8,880,532). The Company’s ability to continue as a going concern and meet its debts as and when they fall due is dependent on the Company:
a. Continuing to generate sufficient revenue from operating activities to enable the Company to generate a profit and positive cash flows from its 2013 operating budget (2012 operating profit of $1,193,080).
b. Receiving continued financial support from the AFL including Future Funding payments, the continued guarantee of the Company’s borrowing facilities totalling $4.6m (currently drawn to $3.75m) and the availability of credit. As part of this commitment, the AFL has agreed to continue to provide certain financial assistance to the Company including funding assistance in 2013 of $3.045 million from the Future Fund and, where necessary, advancing monthly distributions to assist the Company with any cash flow issues."

In 2012 they made a profit of $687,830 and $1.4m of that was from a government grant.

Not exactly right.

It's an escalation process and it's treated as a medical problem.

After two strikes, you have medical and club involvement.

A footy fan that enjoys Caroline Wilson is baffling to me, she doesn't 'tell it how it is' she thrives in the realm of slander and baseless rumour. She continually targets individuals (Brayshaw, Hird, Dane Swan etc) without a shred of evidence, it just seems like because she's got a vagina she thinks she has to be the biggest cunt in the game to stand out.

Not sure about North being robbed, had the eagles been able to kick straight game would have been over at 3/4 time.

The two frees in the last 90 seconds have been paid every game for the past season or so...

I'm surprisingly keen for tonights game despite the likely chance that we'll get absolutely steam rolled, although I'm stoked to see Luke Ball back as he's a champion bloke and is essential to the way we play.

Yeah. That was bad. The only thing I can say is that the camera angle wasn't straight on, and the angle that was shown would make it appear further over than it was/wasn't.

Our defensive pressure was immense. We had nearly double the amount of tackles, and I think something like 25-4 tackles in defensive 50's. We pressured you guys all day, and you guys just didn't know what to do when you didn't have men in clear space.

Hopefully this is a turning point for us this season.

Essendon didn't go full throttle and paid gave up top spot for it today. I was at the game and right in line with the goals and it was a behind, the goal umpire even signalled so from what I saw, absolute disgrace of a call.

That's exactly my concern with this review system. The goal umpire signalled a behind, trust his/her judgement ffs. Plus they use the technology and even when its close to being conclusive don't go with the footage. Its a joke. That said though that one decision doesn't change the fact that the Lions were the better team.

From what i've read, the boundary umpire stepped in and said it was a mark, so that's why they went with the review. It wasn't just the main umpire over riding the Goal Umpire.

Worthwhile mentioning that that 7mate rating in Perth won the ratings for Perth for the whole night, beating the main channels, for the second time this year (and the 2nd time in history).

What's the Buzz: The AFL's $197M debacle

PHIL ROTHFIELD THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH MAY 19, 2013 12:00AM

IF it were a business and not a sporting franchise, the money being burnt on the struggling GWS Giants would be bordering on a scandal.

Today, we can reveal a staggering $197 million is being invested on the AFL easybeats, a team that attracted less than 2,000 paying customers to last week's capitulation against the Adelaide Crows.

At the same time, traditional old rugby league venues such as Brookvale and Leichhardt ovals are being neglected and left to rot by state and federal governments that don't care.

The governments have funded a $60 million Skoda Stadium redevelopment for the Giants' exclusive use, the $27 million Blacktown complex and the brand new $10 million Giants training base at Homebush.

On top of that, AFL boss Andrew Demetriou has thrown in $100 million over the next five years.

Such an enormous outlay would be almost understandable if the facilities were being properly utilised by Sydney sporting fans.
After 18 months, GWS have already bailed out on Blacktown as their headquarters.

Their average crowds are fewer than 7,000 at Skoda, even allowing for thousands of giveaways for every game.

From last Sunday's crowd of 5830, as many as 2,000 were complimentary tickets, 1,500 GWS members, 2,000 sales and 330 corporates.

At the same time, rugby league clubs are attracting up to 20,000 fans to suburban grounds. Yet the facilities are a disgrace.

Brookvale Oval is now a crumbling , decaying old footy park - yet it is home to one of the glamour teams of the NRL.

It has two old red brick toilet blocks to service the entire hill area. They have been there since the ground opened.

You stand in mud in the queue to use them. Old food outlets, long lines, poor parking - you name it and Brookvale suffers from it.

The likelihood of Tony Abbott becoming Prime Minister in September will help the Sea Eagles' cause, although the O'Farrell government will only spend money on major venues such as Parramatta Stadium, ANZ or Allianz from here on.

So the AFL easybeats keep receiving their Giant handouts - and league fans are left with a giant snub.

What's the Buzz: The AFL's $197M debacle

LOL. Yeah Phil that's why Penrith, a club that's been in the NRL for 50 years, got just 7800 on the same day GWS got 5800. Add two Sydney clubs in Wests Tigers and Cronulla getting just 9000 to a derby while Parramatta got just 11000.

Smell the fear! :-"

Btw Phil - Essendon are ploughing $15 million of their OWN money into their new training facilities at Tullamarine. So there's a lesson to NRL clubs.
