Then things need to move on to punishing the players individually. They'd have to do it pretty sharpish to give time for Essendon to have their appeals process heard before the finals.

There's medical people and staff to take care of the banned/not banned stuff. If you're a player, surely you'd trust the doctor/fitness guy/sports scientist? It is their job after all.

When a player admits to taking a banned drug something needs to be done. I really do not understand why Essendon is even still playing this season.

That's not how it works under every sport that signs up to WADA (which the AFL does). Players are ultimetely responsible for what they take. I think it was such a drastic betrayal of player welfare that Essendon must be made an example of... like Storm in NRL Essendon must be punished severely so other teams don't think to follow this path. I think points deduction, fine, draft picks and suspensions to key personnel would suffice.

I know a bunch of people have been upgrading their memberships to ensure voting rights for the current Board spill that's going on. I'll probably be upgrading my Vic membership for next season as well.

12k at a GWS game? That's barely their cumulative crowd for the whole season.

Bombers won't be playing finals football. I think most teams in the 8 are hoping the Kangaroos don't sneak in, they could do some real damage, especially week 1

It won't matter any way. The roos will give up a lead against Collingwood again and Carlton will get up against Port.

$2m fine, loss of premiership points, loss of their first 2 draft picks, Hird suspended for a year...
I think the AFL might actually have gone too far. I mena, I know that the AFL are trying to make an example of Essendon, but in the highly unlikely chance that another club is caught in a similar infraction then how can they punish them any harder?

Edited by afromanGT: 27/8/2013 08:46:35 PM Not quite, not loss of premiership points, they keep the points, but are automatically placed in 9th position and therefore cannot contest the finals. All their stats, brownlow votes, etc are unaffected.

God damn, if only we didn't have to travel to Geelong. Makes games like Round 1 against the Dogs and the numerous close losses where we just faded/start poorly really hurt. Still...I can't help but ridiculously optimistic.

This just sounds a bit iffy to me. I do hope a full report is eventually released to the public by ASADA. Seems pretty soft to me.

They've been removed from the finals a week out, been given a 2 million dollar fine which would cripple many clubs, have lost their club legend coach that is loved by the players for a year and docked their first 2 draft picks, which clubs like Geelong and Sydney have shown to be critical for continued success. These decisions put together effectively shut Essendons premiership window. I'm not saying its unfair but its certainly not soft :d

But if this was to happen for instance in a sport like cycling we'd be seeing harsher penalties especially for the 'coach'.
