Yeah this point really stood out, Mulvey saying that the QAS is outdated and in need of help, sounds to me like we may have ourselves a youth academy soon!

So my take from the tweets. Would be great if a few of the lads at the Forum could go into more detail.

Quote:
This year - 15,000 attendance.

Just looking at our fixtures this will be quite tough, hopefully we can achieve this.

The QAS stuff could be huge for the club, anymore details?

Quote:
(MM) We needed to regenerate. I gave SD a list of 3 players I wanted to bring to club. Liam Miller was one, Matt McKay was another.

This is very very good to hear. We'll be a strong club with our GM and coach working together.

Quote:
Salary cap is the issue

Not to surprising given our squad.

Quote:
I'm not afraid to bring youth in.

Excellent.

Good to hear about the kits any more details?

Quote:

:d

Quote:
Now time for us to ask questions!

The fact that they wanted to ask questions is really positive. Shows that they're really serious about this engagement.

Quote:
Do we need to change our logo going into our 10th year

Maybe only a minor change.

Quote:

Good stuff. :d

Pride mentor roars ahead

HAVING completed a successful debut National Premier League season with Western Pride, Kasey Wehrman could have opted for some time off.

However, he couldn't be happier with a recent decision to broaden his coaching experience and help the Ipswich region develop A-League talent.

The former international footballer has been appointed an assistant coach with the Brisbane Roar youth team preparing for the new season.

The prospect of having many days off has disappeared.

However, Wehrman sees several benefits in his new role.

Apart from reuniting with his former Queensland Academy of Sport coach Mike Mulvey and another Ipswich product Jason Kearton, Wehrman can build stronger ties between the state NPL competition and A-League.

"I've been lucky because I've known Mike since I was 13 or 14," said 36-year-old Wehrman.

Mulvey helped Wehrman and his family relocate from north-west Queensland to Goodna, where the rising teenager's football career flourished.

Keen to now develop his coaching at elite level, Wehrman sees working with Mulvey, youth team head coach Jeff Hopkins, Roar conditioner Ken Stead and Kearton as a terrific opportunity.

"It's really good," said Wehrman, who played more than 140 national/A-League games and 80-plus matches for Australian under-20, under-23 and Socceroos sides between 1995 and 2012.

"I'm invited to all the senior training and all the meetings.

"It helps me with the learning and I can keep an eye on the youth team boys. Help them out as much as I can.

"Kennie trained me before I was at the Olympics (Sydney).

"I've known Jason Kearton around the traps."

Like Wehrman, Kearton played at international level for many years before returning to Ipswich.

"We've got a real good combination going on at the Roar of all different coaches from different levels and different areas as well," Wehrman said.

"That always helps when it comes to Mike because he's a big supporter of Queensland players and Queensland coaches."

Wehrman will continue his role as Western Pride head coach for the second NPL season next year.

Pride finished in eighth place with eight wins and three draws, having beaten competition leaders Olympic in their second last game.

"The Pride's been like a real surprise," Wehrman said.

"We probably achieved a lot more than we thought we would accomplish in the first year.

"I hope to go on and make that even bigger and better next year."

Helping the Roar continues Wehrman's progression.

"That's been a real icing on the cake," he said.

"On top of that, there's a few cherries on top where I've got to now - work with a full-time professional team, helping develop their youth players coming through and working alongside Mike and Jeff, who have been around a long time. And Kennie has been up and down through all the different categories of coaching as well."

The Roar youth team is being picked this week before Wehrman helps his Pride side prepare for its game against the Roar senior side on September 18.

As for a break, Wehrman accepted that would be shortlived between the NPL and A-League seasons.

"It doesn't matter. I'm doing the thing I love and that makes it a lot easier," he said.

Queensland Supporter

FOR someone born in England, Mike Mulvey has become a loyal Queenslander.

Just ask Western Pride and Brisbane Roar assistant youth coach Kasey Wehrman.

Having recently been added to the Roar coaching staff, Wehrman is excited about working again with his former Queensland Academy of Sport mentor.

Since moving to Australia, former QAS, Gold Coast and now Roar head coach Mulvey has shown his true football colours.

"He's born in Manchester but I can tell you now he's an out-and-out Queenslander," Wehrman said.

So pretty much what you read on twitter is what happened at the fan forum. Two points I didn't see twitter address, I might have missed it.

Club will not be a club to sign big names, but rather players that fit the culture and style of the club. The club do not want to be a club that needs media attention for the names it brings in, but want that attention for its brand of football and, hopefully, a growing fan base with the best club culture in Australia.

Kit will be released on the 9th/10th September. Its the final year of the Puma deal and the club will be looking for a new supplier for next season, and that search starts now.

What I liked from the forum was how open Sean was to the fans. He showed a genuine interest in changing the culture that existed that made the club closed off and come across as snobbish. he wants the club to be a fans club, be open to the fans and decisions such as club song, club logo etc etc will only be made with fan input. There is a real willingness to change the way the club works to be more of an open club that engages its fans and makes them feel part of the club too.

Mike spoke with plenty of passion and you can see his desire to win and do so playing an attractive brand of football. Definitely someone who loves his football and takes his job very seriously. The thinking from the club at the moment is on another level from what ive seen in Australia before, and quite frankly its advanced compared to the other clubs. Its a promising sign, I just hope it stays forever.

What I forgot to mention was that Sean mentioned that Man Utd were meant to play a second game in Brisbane, but the Newman government refused to come to the party with the cash.

Any idea which particular kit manufacturer they're looking at after Puma? And that really sucks about the government not wanting to fund the Manchester United game, which is stupid. Look at how much revenue it generated for the New South Wales government.

They not looking at a particular manufacturer. They looking at all of them. They want a manufacturer that will provide top quality kits, not just for the players but for the fans as well, so no more sublimation and cheap quality material. They also want one that will be strong with our identity and colour scheme. ORANGE IS NEVER GOING. They also want the supplier to be able to provide a decent variety and be able to provide it at a cheaper price.

Newman is cutting everything. Would have been massive to have United over, but then again, I wouldn't have had the chance to see Sydney if they did come here.

Thanks for taking the time to post those tweets roar_brisbane, the things that excite me the most are talks of a new logo/name/colours, I would like to see one maroon kit(wondering if this will be the 3rd kit)and a logo with a lion inside like Hull does with the tiger and scrap the Roar nickname. That's just my opinion though. I think all clubs should have a discussion on targeted area, logo, name colours etc.

I really liked what mulvey had to say about entertaining the crowd and playing their brand of football. A bit disappointed about not having a big marquee as you guys have such a big stadium.

Yeah that makes sense. Just as long as they're a good football brand, I'd be happy with that. Hoping for Adidas or Nike though. They both seem to bring out a good range for their A-League teams. And they're slightly cheaper than ours, although fairly similar.

And makes sense. Half the reason the game generated so much is because so many people travelled interstate or came from overseas to see the game.

It's positive that they are talking to the fans of the possibility of potential changes.

Personally I'd prefer only minor changes to the logo, Get rid of the blue and red on the mane and make it all black.

Would be completely against the scraping of the 'Roar' name.

I've been a fan of Mulvey since day one, can't wait for this season.

Thank you for that.

What I forgot to mention was that Sean mentioned that Man Utd were meant to play a second game in Brisbane, but the Newman government refused to come to the party with the cash.

You gd fn kidding me. NO WONDER - That explains it!

Well, well, HOPEFULLY 'LESSON LEARNED' from the QLD State Govt. - Hopefully they looked on with ENVY as Sydney and Melbourne hosted sold out games, huge crowds and huge net benefit to their local GDPs!

IF NOT, then slow bloody learners, and sorry to say, but 'backwards hick state' stereotype re-inforced - thanks to bloody Liberal state govt. who cut everything and lack the foresight to invest in an initiative like this which was proven to 'pay off', elsewhere, in rival states.

But again, surely they do - IF a Barca, Real, Arsenal, Chelsea or the like come - The proof was in the pudding this pre-season and all attempts should be to replicate!

It's incredibly hard for them to change entirely. The longer it's run, the more ingrained, especially as they seek to actively grow the fanbase now, on the back of a successful few seasons. The recognition of the club only grows and so does association of the name and colours.

While, yeah, 'Roar' sucks, sounded plastic and was also 'forced' on them due to the Brisbane Lions merged club (Thankfully really?), I guess you kind of have to live with it?

Then again, IF done right, with plenty of fan consultation, engagement, it COULD be possible. It depends on momentum and if there's a 'clear alternative' name.

Point of reference - With the establishment of the Wanderers, the Fan Forums there both suggested the name 'West/Western' Sydney' and also the nick, 'Wanderers' via local history.

IF a similar movement, initiative would come from fans, rallying around a local name, with deep history, that may further unify the Brisbane football community, then maybe THAT'S when such a move/brand tweak could work?

The Wanderers got their name from the first recorded match in the West Sydney region, which featured a 'Wanderers' side, maybe Brisbane could do similarly? From the reading, seems just a simple tweak down to 'Brisbane FC' could be enough to do the trick?

FTR I always thought a 'Brisbane FC' just sounded alot more epic, or held more gravitas, for some reason.

Going by below, 'Brisbane City FC' seemed a prominent early club, though I see a current QLD NPL club has that same (Former NSL at one point), club with Italian roots, established in 1952.

'Brisbane United FC' is also a possible name, once of the name of an NSL predecessor to the Brisbane Strikers. Though rather generic I know, atleast no other clubs would have the name and it would have SOME meaning, I guess, in terms of seeking to unite the Brisbane Football club under a wider banner than 'the Lions/Roar'?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_association_football_in_Brisbane,_Queensland

BTW Really fascinating - note the 'rivalry' with Ipswich early days and note how Ipswich was more dominant right through to the 60s! Sounds as if there are 'rich grounds' for that second, 'Ipswich-based' A/ or A2-League side and alot to draw on!

My goodness... one of the earliest clubs 'Bundamba Rovers'.... = future 'Ipswich Rovers FC'? :o  Or even 'Ipswich Bush Rats FC'! :o

You touched on it earlier that it gets harder to change as the name gets ingrained in the culture and that's the thing it already is ingrained in our culture. We've won games, lost games, hired coaches, sacked coaches, played in finals, won titles, sold out stadiums as the 'Roar'. We are the Roar. I don't see why we have to be something we are not, we aren't the Wanderers. We aren't starting from scratch, we have our own history already and I'm not prepared to re-write it. I'll be strongly against any move to change the name.

The Bush Rats would suit Ipswich perfectly.

I would much prefer Umbro, but they dont do kits anymore, well i dunno about in Aus, but Europe they are done. Nike and Adidas seem too generic with their designs and very boring. Plus their kits seem baggy when the players wear them.

I cant think of many other brands that stand out. Mi-fit do a good Wigan kit and Macron have done well at Villa at this year. If Puma used their European expertise here theyd be ok, still not too sure though on who i would go. Nike are fine if they dont go generic and instead do something original like they have with Everton away.

Good points Roar_Brisbane, all true. Though a slight change down. 'officially' to 'Brisbane FC' is still possible (With same colours etc), perhaps? Not unlike how the Dallas team did in the MLS and many English clubs have changed logos, names, colours in some form or another via new owners.

Even Roar did, when the QLD teams came in, to changed from 'QLD Roar' to 'Brisbane Roar'. Still, it's a bit of a bridge/gap to still cross and would need a groundswell from the fans to change it, as the CEO said.

What are the club’s plans to reach 10,000 membership target?

Sean Dobson:
• 10,000 is an optimistic target. Currently, we are tracking towards 8,500 but this is still a good step forward from two-three years ago.
• I still believe the strongest push for memberships is strong team on the pitch which is coming together.
• The ONE GOAL program is playing a big role in building support for the club
• To be honest, the majority of our marketing budget was spent on re-signing Matt McKay

What do people think of their responses this area?

This is clearly abbreviated, but interesting to read. Not all that convincing but atleast we heard where they are coming from. Good to hear they actually ARE tracking for 8k atleast, which would indeed be impressive for the Roar, given where they are coming from. Easily a new club record. They can always build towards 10k and beyond next season.

Roar are just getting into this 'Memberships business/game' it seems. Slow to get into it, but they will learn and hopefully further improve and refine their practices. To see the work Heart and others do, down south - Hopefully Roar, Glory and others are taking tips!

How can we increase the atmosphere at Suncorp Stadium?

Sean Dobson:
• (This season) we will trial a few programs, out of the Den and active supporter groups, to see how we can try and minimise restrictions
• We want to give freedom to the Den to express their passion in any way they see fit.
• We are looking to find a commercial partner to help bring the price of the Den memberships down.
• The Den is what drives our match day atmosphere.

What do people think of this?

TOP initiatives IMHO! Cost clearly a concern but also the expansion and improvement of 'The Den' should obviously be an integral strategy, given the examples of Victory, Wanderers, SFC and co. Glad he recognises the important role the active support brings, atmosphere wise, in the club's ability to engage a wider fan base.

Clearly the CEO and club are engaged with the impact the two visiting teams left and that's good to see. Hopefully they can lobby the state government more strongly, next time, on the back of 'this evidence' from south the border!

I think we will see the logo change a fair bit. The blue and maroon will go from the logo and we will see more of a badge or crest come in.

The fans are quite serious that the club needs to look and behave more like a professional football club rather than a sunday league team. Many of the people at the forum are of English/irish/Scottish descent, so there is this feeling that they want their club to get to a stage where we have the heritage and prestige of European clubs rather than gimmicky franchises.

Randomly switched over to ABC in the car today and Mulvey was on.

By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.
