Without checking for conformation, i'm sure the Mel/Syd game is the highest rating general season aleague game since the league's inception. No idea of the ratings for the other two Saturday games, as the top 50 are not yet published. The Sunday games will be in next week's ratings period. Terrific start to the season. Those ratings dwarf round 1 last year. Thanks for posting Skeptic.:p

Metro ratings only
2010 40.Live: Football: A-League Sydney V Mel V Fox Sports 3 32,000
2011 4 Live: Football: A-League Melb V V Syd Fc Fox Sports 1 110,000
Only a 300% increase in Metro ratings in 12 months ... and, last year's match was the Grand Final rematch.
But, Harry missed the HAL launch so he's a greedy, selfish bastard who doesn't put anything back into Australian football.

Look really good. Does anyone have a link to a databse or info on games last year? I remember most being from the 40-80 range with the top being the derbies or big matches. Id imagine everyone would be very happy with these, especially considering its combined with healthy crowds across the board.

One would have to be happy with the mel/syd figures. It will be interesting to see if and/or how quickly and to what extent the HK novelty wears off.

Just goes to show. If Fox puts the money in to bring marquee's back they will reap the rewards.
Time for the league to be properly funded.

While the HK factor will definitely wear off eventually, it'll still go strong for this year at least I think.

Funny how there is a 'novelty effect' for Kewell when statistics contradict one's position, but not a 'disinterest effect' for international friendlies when statistics support one's position...

Let's not forget the MVFC v SFC match was broadcast at the same time as the ENG v FRA Rugby World Cup semi-finals.
I reckon most "novelty/theatre watchers" of sport would have been tuned to the RWC QF rather than the H&A domestic league.

Scrap the a-league marketing budget [if there is one], remove the international players slots and have all aussies and 2 marquees only.

Wow, see that's the exact kind of thing we need on FTA in a years time, and that audience would triple or more! Brilliant stuff, hopefully a similar audience for this week's F3 Derby, Melbourne Derby, Adelaide-Sydney game and south Queensland derby!

EPL game was on at 12 at night though? Also, I bet the figure is wrong by miles because all the pubs I went to had 20 people at least watching and loving the game!

the high end of this seasons PayTV ratings is very promising and exciting but the lower rating games still aren't making the top 50 which is concerning.

And expectation should be extremely tempered at this stage. After only two rounds, only two games have shown an improvement, both MV and both at a time of high anticipation of HK's early aleague games. Others have been as normal from past seasons which is very poor relative to other sports. And the Socceroos continue to be disappointing. Edited by skeptic: 17/10/2011 10:59:15 PM

Quote:Viewers tuning in Michael Lynch October 19, 2011 MELBOURNE Victory and Adelaide United as popular as English Premier League giants Liverpool and Manchester United? It would seem so, at least in Australia. The English pair might have enormous global reach, but on Fox Sports, the two A-League teams rate on a par with the European giants. An average audience of 126,000 tuned in to Fox for the Liverpool-Man United clash on Saturday night. Twenty-four hours earlier, the Adelaide-Victory game attracted an average audience of 125,000. A week earlier, 155,000 saw the Victory take on Sydney, a record for a regular-season A-League game. According to Fox, the average viewing figures for round one of the A-League was 73,000, while the average audience in the two rounds so far is 64,000. It's early days but that is a significant rise on the average viewing audience of 45,000 for A-League matches last season. The numbers are music to the ears of Football Federation Australia chief executive Ben Buckley, who soon will be hunkering down to begin talks on the sport's next television deal. The current one expires in 2013. ''We think starting the season in clear air after the NRL and AFL has helped with the promotion and publicity for the league, and we worked hard with the fixture to schedule attractive games to start the season off,'' Buckley said. ''It's a positive trend and a reflection of the greater emphasis on constant kick-off times, which make it more feasible for fans to go to matches or watch on television. It's also testimony to the general excitement around the game. In the past the emphasis was on viewers watching the Socceroos; now there is a shift to the A-League. We need both elements of the game to be strong.'' Read more: http://www.theage.com.au/sport/soccer/viewers-tuning-in-20111018-1lyn1.html#ixzz1bATs8Pny

Very encouraging figures. It's been disappointing over the last few years to see the numbers lagging so far behind the rest.
I'm not so interested in the MV vs Syd figure, or the AU vs MV, it was the others than were rating well on the opening weekend that encouraged me the most. They weren't the result of novelties - they were good marketing by Fox and good general interest built over the off season (and 'dead' space in the domestic sporting market).
The next tv deal will be driven by the ratings... The higher they are now, the better the deal will be then. Fingers crossed the figures stay high.
