sure there is. Discretion being the height of valor and all. I think you've confused "overt desire" and "underlying primordial instinct".

There's nothing underlying and indiscrete about a boner, and we've all had those.

All normal functioning people are driven by sex, some more than others but the desire to breed isn't a choice it's an innately programmed need. There is a cluster of personality disorders in which the sufferer does not have any need for sexual gratification, but I framing "universal truth" in the context of a person who is socially and psychologically normal, and has normal biological and hormonal functioning.

First paragraph and already in trying to disagree you've ceded my point that it is not a universal truth, trying to hide those who don't adhere to your view in the category of abnormal (subhuman!)

Secondly, you should really take a long hard look at yourself if you are equating aspects of sexuality that differ from your own as disorders. Asexuality is not a disorder, just as hyper-sexuality is not a disorder (or even, tangentially, homosexuality and bisexuality.) Everyone fits on a vast spectrum of sexuality, and it is no less right to not be driven by the urge to mate. You may believe it abnormal, but it is not evidence based fact (and the prominence of differing sexualities significantly discredits the theory.)

Thirdly, you cannot prescribe your own values on a community that do not hold to them. For instance, zimbo's culture dictates that abstinence is important and, thus, women who are a part of his culture do not expect their new husbands to be Ron Jeremy in the sack and that is OK. He (and they) should not be shamed for how they want to live their lives by someone prescribing their own absolutes about sexual function.

rusty wrote:
The problem with your claim is you do care whether you have sex now or in ten years, the conscious want can't override the base instinctual need for sex. Sex is healthy and it's medically proven people who are having regular are happier and this spills into other areas of their lives giving them a holistic sense of well being, and those who aren't getting any are more prone to depression and anxiety. The biological basis for "virginity" is completely absurd but it can be important in a psychological and cultural sense as it interplays with themes such as masculinity, power, self esteem and social acceptance, justly or otherwise. Our self image and worth isn't entirely internally driven and is shaped by social expectations of our gender roles and whether our lifestyles conform with those values we place on those respective roles. It can also be important in a sexual sense as experience is necessary for skills and competence and this can improve the value of our relationships and the romantic, pair bonding experiences.

No, I don't. Don't pretend to have more of a grasp on what drives me than I do. It insults me, and makes you look like a closed-minded fool.

Studies have shown that orgasms produce hormones that elicit a positive response in the brain. However, studies are not empirically absolute on absence of sex leading to mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. There is correlation, but any academic worth their salt (or other component compounds) knows that correlation does not equal causation. It is far more likely that absence of sexual activity increases the likelihood of depression and anxiety in sexual and hyper-sexual individuals but there is no evidence that it holds for all people.

I at no point have suggested that sex is unhealthy, or that anyone should be shamed by losing their virginity. My argument is you should not be stigmatised for not valuing sex or, indeed, valuing your virginity. Following that point is that there are many, many people who do not value sex as highly as you do. You should not be shamed for this, but nor should they be told they are abnormal. They are as normal as you are.

I was actually reading up on Tinder the other day, it sounds like an elegant approach to the dating-help market.

For the uninitiated, you fire up the app and it will show you someone in a pre-defined distance (though no exact location) You see a photo(s?) and some basic info about them (basically the same level as a dating site/FB info page)- if you like them you swipe one way, if you don't you swipe the other. If you swipe to like and they swipe to like you, you can chat to each other and meet up if you so decide.

Digital-assisted dating takes a bit of the charm out of taking a punt on just talking to someone, but that aside Tinder is one of the better implementations.

Nah. It had been going badly for a while because we've both got issues that we need to deal with, but despite me helping him he started taking all of his hurt and frustration out on me. It just hit a climax yesterday where he was flat out abusing me, and I deserve better than to be treated like that. I care about him a hell of a lot, but it's time that I started caring about myself too. Calling me fat was just one way he was trying to hurt me.
