On that score Labor will be out on its arse. Agree. Australians are a pretty self-centred, materialistic lot considering how financially well off we are. Hence, its not surprising the large percentage of climate change deniers are conservatives. It is perceived to prevent their ability to have even more. Look, we're all just families sending kids to school, working hard and trying to go on a holiday once in a blue moon. You make it sound like everyone is living in a Toorak mansion. Most people live a pay-to-mortgage existence. That's largely because the average house price has gone from double the average annual salary 20 years ago to NINE TIMES the average annual salary today.

Another day, more Tony Abbott gaffes. Kevin Rudd needs to "man up". Probably not a good call after following a female prime minister. Gay Marriage is just a "fashion of the moment" apparently. Shrugs off the 'sex appeal' comment as being a "daggy dad" comment.

Righto. they really aren't that much of a deal...... Second one is, don't really see the problem with the other ones, especially the man up comment. When you're going to question someone's strength of character you've got to find a better way of doing it than saying "man up" when you're already being called a misogynist and he's following a female prime minister.

Not sure it was exactly double but you're pretty much spot on. The bang for our buck is far smaller than it used to be, and real estate is the biggest factor here and by some margin. I remember you saying something along the lines of "A Gen Y person has Buckley's of buying his own home" - that's pretty much correct. I remember you saying something along the lines of "A Gen Y person has Buckley's of buying his own home" - that's pretty much correct. The middle class has gone backwards in this country and that does nothing good for Australia. I actually blame the excessive influence of the corporate world over government here - governments Labor AND Liberal. It was around THREE TIMES the annual salary actually. In 1993 my parents bought the house I grew up in for 110,000 which was slightly above the market average of $91k. My father was earning roughly the average salary (circa $32k). In 2007 that house was sold for $508,000 and again in 2010 for $570,000. In 2012 the average wage was $69.5k, the average house price in 2012 was $534,000, more than SEVEN TIMES the annual salary. And yes, for that reason some 90% of Gen Y will never own their own home. The issue is that so many baby boomers have stacked their retirement funds into property investment that they'd never allow anything to be done about it.
