Not sure it was exactly double but you're pretty much spot on. The bang for our buck is far smaller than it used to be, and real estate is the biggest factor here and by some margin.

I remember you saying something along the lines of "A Gen Y person has Buckley's of buying his own home" - that's pretty much correct. The middle class has gone backwards in this country and that does nothing good for Australia. I actually blame the excessive influence of the corporate world over government here - governments Labor AND Liberal.

what beats me is the banks were advised by Rudd to lift liquidity rates on moartgages and introduced mortgage insurance that covers the bank....!!!!!

It was around THREE TIMES the annual salary actually. In 1993 my parents bought the house I grew up in for 110,000 which was slightly above the market average of $91k. My father was earning roughly the average salary (circa $32k).

In 2007 that house was sold for $508,000 and again in 2010 for $570,000. In 2012 the average wage was $69.5k, the average house price in 2012 was $534,000, more than SEVEN TIMES the annual salary. And yes, for that reason some 90% of Gen Y will never own their own home.

The issue is that so many baby boomers have stacked their retirement funds into property investment that they'd never allow anything to be done about it.

My bad, i completely forgot that Abbott and the Liberal party have never ever told a lie in their entire lives.
