Anyone who thinks that the Republic of Australia will be celebrating gay marriages by Christmas is kidding themselves; a Liberal PM is a Liberal PM, and Turnbull will be giving himself a hernia with the Olympic level backflipping he'll be doing on his more liberal opinions when he didn't have skin in the game to placate the party base and keep his leadership.

Not a clear enough majority. Will be plenty of pissed off libs backgrounding against Turnbull which is a shame. The government needs a good clean start. 70 odd votes would have been better but happy with Turnbull in any case. Shorten is the next to go.

Apathetic governing, looking after seats and each others interests, whilst the public continually buys their shit and doesn't demand any better.
The level of apathy among the population will be our nations downfall. The general public dont care about politics unless there's something in it for them.

Yes, I said that, but I also said that as the leader of a conservative party he'll have to backflip on a number of those libertarianisms to keep his job. The only question is whether he'll do it before or after the election.

Its a move to win an election, stuff like gay marriage should stay with the socialist alternative groups for all im concerned! BUT! Australian PMs need to be wily like Howard, he could hold down a job through all that party backstabbing! He kept his friends close but his enemies closer!

Still, as PB said elsewhere, it's a great opportunity for Shorten to provide a real alternative, because now he can't just be a slightly more acceptable Liberal Party; as that is what they have done by (narowly) installing Turnbull.

Its a move to win an election, stuff like gay marriage should stay with the socialist alternative groups for all im concerned! Ignoring the fact that you are a troll, according to current polls, if there was a public plebiscite on marriage equality tomorrow it would pass no worries. Just one of those issues (like a right to euthanasia) that the elected representatives of our country somehow lag behind the public's view. Of course, influence from the religious lobby takes it's toll on democracy. Condemned666 wrote:BUT!
