Gold Coast football bid had nothing, and Ben Manion told me its still Football Queensland goal to have a GC A-league team by 2016, whether its a bid through Palm Beach or a completely different consortium.

Yeah i have heard the same thing. Can anyone confirm?

will still be part of the C.O.E but playing in their local league.

Edds up for new job
LIAM BUTTERWORTH | November 10th, 2012

NEW Northern Fury head coach Gareth Edds has a vision to build a pathway from the ground up to help develop the best football talent in the region into technically gifted players.

The former North Queensland Fury vice-captain was yesterday named the inaugural coach of the first team for next year's new Australian Premier League and wants to help talented young footballers stay in the region and improve their game.

Edds, who holds a UEFA B coaching licence and spent 15 years playing in the English lower divisions with Nottingham Forrest, MK Dons and Tranmere Rovers, said he would draw on his experience to help develop the region's best and brightest. While the Fury board was still working on locking in trial games for the first team, Edds said he wanted a balance of a competitive and developing talent in his team.

"It's a bit of both and those are things we'll talk about down the line," he said.

"At the end of the day you need to have technically gifted players to play and you need to create that.

"You can't keep spending money and things like that, it needs to be created and developed and harnessed."

After signing with the Fury A-league team for what was to be their last season, Edds remained in Townsville with his family and created his own football skills academy.

Edds said he had no doubt that the region had enough depth to produce quality, competitive footballers.

"With guidance, the right training I think we can do that ... help them reach their potential," he said.

Former North Queensland Razorbacks coach Ken Mitchell, who has taken on the job of Fury technical director, has seen the influence Edds had on the region's up-and-coming players while playing with the Queensland State League team in its last season.

"With the profile that the player has, coming from England where he played in the championship, playing at Wembley and then playing for the North Queensland Fury here where most of the young players we had in the side would have idolised him and then to be playing alongside him ... so he did have that hero status," Mitchell said.

"He eventually had that mentor status and now with the situation of him being the coach, it's just an extension of when he was a player."

Fury board member Greg Redington said Edds' experience as a player was the thing that got him over the line ahead of a host of other quality coaching applicants and former A-league players.

He said they had also fielded applications from around the country for the general manager's position, which they hoped to announce next week.

Edds will continue to run his academy along with the part-time, paid Fury role.

Absolutely fantastic attitude to the development of talent
This may be the first time in the history of townsville football that the very best players are chosen.

SA is going to have 30 teams split into a 16 & 14 team divisions, if you squint you can pretend that it isn't identical to what the set up was going to be anyways

Yeah but I'm still getting fucked around as a fan either way. Should I go support Palm Beach and then turn around and say fuck you to those guys and go support a new APL side with the hope of them becoming an A-League team? I'd support both if the bid went straight to the A-League but I'd rather see a club build from the bottom up. I mean, you can understand my predicament.

It doesn't matter, I miss football and I'll watch the local club.

This.

There will be very little difference (other than letterheads, etc.) between the old system and the new system. What really, desperately, needs to be done is a reduction of the talent pool. We don't need 'elite' leagues in each state producing 12 teams in QLD, in NSW, in VIC, in SA, in WA, etc. The last thing we need is an already thin talent pool being spread over 60-80 teams. We need them squashed into a second tier of 8-16 sides, playing nationally. Raise the standard of the team a player is in, and of the opposition he plays against, week in, week out, and the player has far more chance of becoming a better player.

It doesn't have to be a national comp. The smaller states might not like it, but if the NSWPL and VPL joined up, it would still have the effect of focusing the talent in one comp. We all know there isn't the money to support a second professional league, but start small with league in the most populous areas and let it grow organically.

The arses of Ipswich have broken wind
putting clubs interests before players
why was a franchise given to a zone when gc and sc zones lost theirs

Brisbane focus upsets APL club
Comments (3) » David Lems | 22nd Nov 2012 3:00 AM | Story Tools

Claudia Baxter
RE-ELECTED Western Pride chairman Kym Wickstein has been impressed by the numbers and standard of players trialling for next year's Australian Premier League state competition.

However, he's adamant the recently formed Pride franchise will field only one team in each grade from under-12 to open level.

Three Brisbane clubs have requested each APL syndicate enter two teams in each division to accommodate their extra playing numbers.

"We've been vehemently opposed to that,'' Wickstein said after the latest Football Ipswich AGM at Ebbw Vale.

"We believe that would dilute the player strength in our feeder clubs.

"It (extra teams) is not going to happen at Western Pride. That got resounding support from all clubs at the AGM.''

Football Ipswich, representing the major regional clubs, runs the Western Pride franchise.

Wickstein retained his leadership role on the executive, with vice-chairman Todd Hunt and secretary Wendy Spencer.

Former vice-chairman James Buchanan has become operations manager, forming a vital link between the executive, feeder clubs and teams. He'll also oversee game day needs.

The executive will continue to work with Western Pride general manager Pat Boyle.

"The clubs are happy with the direction that we are going,'' Wickstein said.

However, Wickstein said that direction did not include a second APL team in each age group or playing teams in a new zonal structure in East Brisbane, North Brisbane and South Brisbane.

"We're not going to be part of it,'' the chairman said.

"The application was one team per age group and we've done our financial plan, our budgets and our whole submission based on that premise, and we're not going to steer away from that.

"We have got a strategy in place that was agreed to by everybody that we will have a bye or forfeit those games against those second teams (should that happen).

"We will advise the Football Federation of Australia the reasons why an elite club is forfeiting games.''

Wickstein said other APL clubs outside the Brisbane area were also focused on providing one quality team in each division.

However, Wickstein said the addition of an under-20 team next season was welcome.

"We had 36 under-18 players trial last night and we know there's six boys away on schoolies,'' Wickstein said.

"The standard is pretty high.

"The player strength was that good that we're not going to advertise for under-20s. We're going to fill that from the under-18s.

"It's all about development of the younger players anyway.

"It's really pleasing to see the kids coming back to play in Ipswich. On average, we're getting 35-40 per age group.''

Thats interesting, the original plan as per FFA was for each club to have one team per age group not two.
In Victoria the APL concept is under attack because of the restriction of one team per age group. We have been told "Non Negotiable" by the FFA.

Seems there is favourtism.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON APL TRIALS & SKILL ACQUISITION PROGRAM
Date:
23 November 2012
Regrettably, a memo dated 16th November, in draft form awaiting my approval was released to three clubs holding licenses in the APL, and has been subsequently copied and distributed within football circles. THAT MEMO IS RESCINDED.
We have amended our procedures so that future communications will only be distributed to the football community under the authority of the Board or the Chief Executive Officer.
After spending time in Sydney this week, Han Berger reinforced the integrity of the APL as unashamedly elitist. Member Federations were reminded they should never use their discretionary authority in a manner which could dilute the quality. To that end, it was inappropriate for Football Queensland to entertain the suggestion that three clubs be allowed development squads to participate in the APL. That said, Football Queensland has previously given undertakings to those clubs making application to join the APL, that where they had teams of players who were talented enough to participate in the next level, competitions would be provided to satisfy that need.
We spoke with Football Brisbane seeking their cooperation on this issue. However, with the restructure of the Brisbane Leagues, the first opportunity for these teams to compete, should the Clubs make application, would be Division One, which we consider to be the fourth tier (APL, BPL, BJL and Division 1). Football Queensland also considered creating a next level League, and inviting other Clubs to participate, but we deemed this would be confusing and disruptive to the BPL and football generally.
We acknowledge that there is confusion and changing information in the market and would advise that Football Queensland will now conduct trials to determine the quality of players available. We will then either assign those players to the three Clubs who previously indicated they had the required depth of talent to participate in the APL or reassign them into other APL Clubs should they have the requirement, or finally place them into Community Leagues. This process will be managed under the control of the State Technical Director.
Those trials will be conducted on Saturday 1st December at Olympic Football Club, Goodwin Park, Cansdale St, Yeronga, Qld, 4104.
