Just showing the other side to your argument - they were Dormund players. Personally I wouldn't compare players to Juric. Amini has played pretty much no senior football (barring a loan at CCM) in 3 years.

That is ludicrous for a 21 year old.

You sir are a moron.

By your reasoning anyone not playing in one of the top leagues in the world isn't playing senior football? Every game Amini plays is against men in a competitive league. No different to Luongo.

He'll be back at CCM within the year.

Amini plays for the second side in the third division.

He's probably the team's best player.

He has sat on the bench for the first team in the champions league this season.

Last season, when he started dominating, he got injured at a bad time and missed the last half of the season.

Remember Jason Culina? When he was Amini's age he couldn't get a game for Ajax and had to go on loan to the second division where he played like 12 times in one whole season.

He went on to become one of our greatest ever midfielders.

Similarly, when Grella was Brillante's age he couldn't get a game on loan in Serie B and sat on the bench there. Brillante is a work in progress but he has already played a few games this season for a bigger club than Grella or Bresciano ever played for.

We are expecting too much of these young midfielders at their current age.

Also, a year on loan back to an a-league club could be quite beneficial. Look at Behich who is now starting for his club in Turkey after being loaned back to the a-league for a season.

Why are you taking my comment as negative?

I'm just saying with his contract due to expire and he is seemingly nowhere near the first team (bench appearances aside), it is my opinion that he will be back in the A-league either at CCM or another team within the year.

or to put it in to perspective Mario Gotze had played 80 games for Dortmund and scored the winning goal in a world cup final by that age..or Reus had played about 90 bundesliga games for around 30 goals.

Lets compare like for like.

In my opinion, Germany are the greatest football nation ever. We are so far off that level its not funny.

Very, very few Australians have played regular top flight/highest level football before they were 20.

The three I can think of are Kewell, Aloisi and Craig Moore. And he played for Rangers. There may be more but I can't find any.

Notable mentions should go to Zelic who was 22 when he was playing for Dortmund, Viduka who was 20 when he was playing for Zagreb but was 25 before he played EPL.

Looking back, Its looks like Craig Johnston was playing for Middlesborough when he was 18 but I'm not sure if that was top flight. Either way, he moved to Liverpool when he was 21.

We just don't produce world class teenagers like the superpowers do. Hopefully one day we will.

In international football terms, 21 is not insanely young. It's young, but not insanely young. There are many world class footballers have been playing first team and national team football for several years by the age of 21. Look at the age of many players in the Bundesliga, EPL, La Liga, Serie A, etc. Look at Germany, Belgium, etc.

21 is insanely young for Australian footballers, but not by international standards.

The reason I raise this point is that it's unhelpful to our young players if we hold them to different standards compared to club coaches. I'm certainly not suggesting that 21 is too old to be playing for the 2s, and trying to break into a first team. But the problem is that while we may think it's insanely young, their coaches won't. Not when they have 16 year olds in the exact same position. I think it's better if we look at things through the lenses of international coaches.

By the same token, the reason that we don't have players like Messi, the German players, etc. is that our best players aren't getting to Europe early enough. I don't have a problem with comparing our players with the best in the world. It gives a sense of perspective. Why shouldn't we compare our players with the best? Because we don't like what we see. We don't have less talent. We just don't have the coaching or competition to enable our best players to get to that level fast enough. That means our players, if they want to be able to develop the technical skills and tactical awareness to compete with those brilliant players, should ideally go to Europe in their early-mid teens. The problem is that if a player goes to Europe in his twenties, he's several years behind European players, in terms of technical development and tactical awareness. It also makes it next to impossible for him to become world class. In order to become world class, they have to risk it and go to Europe young.

I get that pursuing this course of action isn't as safe as staying in the A-League and developing there. Doing that gives mroe chance of making it Europe, but it means they probably won't go further than being a solid performer for a reasonable team. The guys who really make your jaw drop go to Europe younger.

Good stuff, Sains! =d>

Sains and Wilko have been killing it with their clubs lately. In combination with Maty Ryan at the back who they both know well, we're looking OK for CBs when you throw Spira into the mix.

We have 3 really reliable CB's now. Wilko, Sainsbury and Spira. Makes me wonder if Ange's methods are paying off, would they have been doing this if he hadn't capped em and gave them some incentive ... that's the question

You make some good points.

The whole overhaul of Australian football development over the last decade is an attempt to rectify the exact concerns you talk about. By trying to improve technical development for children so they are not so far behind their European counterparts.

It is probably still to early to see if it is working.
