6 Week Cycle Concept- Periodising Training (for preseason) Dean May, Tassie NTC coach, men
Dean May's presentation involved two sessions - a lecture and a practical session
Dean is one of the most confident coaches in the country. Krones knows of him. He has been an army instructor, like Ad Derkson from the KNVB. He frightens all youth players, like Ad did in Canberra!
He stood and delivered with an intimidating style, firing questions at specific members of the audience, not me, because I asked most questions and made most comments from the floor over the course duration. He expressly targeted V League coaches and TDs about what they were going to do for preseason training. There is still an epidemic here of players training without the ball, even in season. He took the piss out of football coaches doing push ups, sit ups, tuck jumps, burpees, boot camps, sprints, distance running, etc.
I don't think anybody else thought it was funny, but I thought it was hilarious. He asked coach after coach, what they were doing for their preseason sessions. Like the KNVB instructors and now FFA instructors, he is fanatic about getting players fit, by playing football, using medium sized games and SSGs. other FFA instructors hold teh same views, but they usually prefer the softly , softly approach - not Dean.
He showed pictures of clubs round Australia running on sand dunes for training. He castigated sports scientists in Australia who quote basketball players or any other sport besides football for trying to dictate what footballers should do.
DM's outside practical sessions were outstanding. Whereas most other coaches, excluding Norm Boardman, appear nervous, Dean loves lecturing coaches on his sessions. He is extremely confident and really is an excellent coach. He is currently assistant for the Olyroos or under 20s, I'm not sure.
Also, as Steelhinho said his instructor did, he stated that he would visit any club anywhere to assist with training, or welcomed any coach to attend his NTC sessions. I'll be taking his offer up. His team plays the best football in the state - proactive or circulation football, win, lose or draw.
