Star Wars director JJ Abrams to defy bosses over shift to London Abrams to build facilities in Los Angeles to limit disruption to his family over Star Wars shoot Ben Child He said earlier this year that Disney's decision to shoot upcoming Stars Wars: Episode VII in London "really does make me insane". Now it appears JJ Abrams is looking to minimise the amount of time he is forced to spend in the UK after the film-maker reportedly began building new post-production facilities in California. A source told the Hollywood Reporter that Abrams is building a green room, sound studios and other upgrades specifically for Episode VII at his Bad Robot production company's headquarters in Santa Monica in Los Angeles county. The move means the film-maker would be able to complete a large portion of necessary post-production work in his home state. The Super 8 director has shot all his previous films in Los Angeles, where he lives with his family, even covering costs out of his own pocket to remain local for this year's Star Trek Into Darkness. Disney and LucasFilm ultimately opted to keep faith with tradition, however. All six previous Star Wars movies have included UK production time, in studios such as Elstree, Shepperton, Leavesden, Ealing and Pinewood. Abrams signalled his irritation with a decision that would force him to uproot his young family in June, remarking of his children's reaction: "When you're 13 and 14, it's like, fuck that, I don't care what the movie is." Bad Robot's upgrade will transform the three-storey, 18,000-square-foot site into an impressive production facility. It already features editing bays, a props workshop and a screening room that can double as a set, as well as Abrams' personal suite of offices. Abrams was rumoured to be walking away from Episode VII in July, with some commentators suggesting that his reluctance to relocate might be the source of the Star Trek director's discontent. Disney and LucasFilm fiercely denied the reports. The Bad Robot upgrade would nevertheless appear to be a useful workaround. Star Wars: Episode VII is due to shoot in London in early 2014, with a release pencilled in for the following year. http://www.theguardian.com/film/2013/sep/12/star-wars-episode-7-jj-abrams-la?

NEWS Disney exec talks Star Wars origin films 13 September 2013 You must do what you feel is right, of course… Disney’s Chief Financial Officer Jay Rasulo has been speaking to the Communications & Entertainment Conference in Beverly Hills and during his presentation, he talked a little about Disney’s plans for the Star Wars franchise: “Of all our worries, ‘Star Wars’ is not one of them”, describing the franchise as an ‘evergreen property’, he continued, “the market is extremely hot for everything ‘Star Wars…The sky’s the limit…There’s incredible flexibility. It’s an unbelievable palette to create from.” Rasulo also confirmed Disney’s plans to release a ‘Star Wars’ trilogy film or ‘origin story film’ every year, beginning with JJ Abrams’ sequel in 2015. In amongst the discussions on merchandising, licensing and theme park opportunities, he did concede that the primary aim was “to put out a great film”. That’s good to hear but there were no details regarding which characters might feature in those films nor whether there was a danger of ‘Star Wars fatigue’. Interestingly though, after The Lone Ranger gave Disney a financial knee to the crotch earlier this summer, Rasulo did state that, “there needs to be a cap on [the budgets of] tentpole franchise movies…Going forward, we will see a cap on spending on those movies.” However, The Lone Ranger’s biggest problem was not the budget, but the quality. Make good films and audiences will come. As long as the new swathe of Star Wars films are more like Empire Strikes Back and less like Krull, Disney should be fine. It’s a fascinating and crucial time for the future of the Star Wars universe. Source: Variety http://skymovies.sky.com/disney-exec-talks-star-wars-origin-films?

About to order the 'Last of the Jedi' series. Hard to get in Aus.
I have the first 6 or so, but never got the last 4. Was a great series. Jude Watson did wonderful things for Star Wars.

Star Wars auditions to be held Press Association – 57 minutes Star Wars bosses are holding open auditions across the UK and Ireland to fill two roles in the upcoming movie. Casting sessions for director JJ Abrams' Episode VII will start this week at locations including London, Glasgow and Dublin, according to reports. The casting call was announced on the Twitter account @UKopencall, which described the Disney project as being a "major Hollywood movie". With little known about the eagerly anticipated film, the announcement gives fans the first details about characters and the possible plot. The first character is a female, aged around 17 or 18, who must be "beautiful, smart and athletic". She is said to have been young when she lost her parents and has become "street smart and strong" from having to make her own way in life. The male character is described as being between 19 and 23 and must be "handsome, smart and athletic". The announcement says he "doesn't have the strongest sense of himself" after growing up without a father figure. The characters are called Rachel and Thomas, but it is not known whether the names and details of their lives have been altered to disguise the fact the casting call is for Episode VII. The auditions start in Bristol on November 9. Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill are expected to return in Episode VII, with Benedict Cumberbatch, Alex Pettyfer and Michael B Jordan also among those rumoured to have roles. The film is due to be released in 2015. http://uk.movies.yahoo.com/star-wars-auditions-held-101427847.html?

.. New 'Star Wars' film to be set 30 years after 'Return of the Jedi' ReutersBy Lisa Richwine | Reuters – 14 hours ago.. By Lisa Richwine PORTLAND, Oregon (Reuters) - The highly anticipated next instalment of the "Star Wars" franchise will be set 30 years after "Episode VI: Return of the Jedi," Walt Disney Co.'s chief executive officer Bob Iger said on Tuesday at the company's annual shareholders meeting. Disney purchased "Star Wars" production company LucasFilm for $4.05 billion in 2012 and announced it would release three new films in the popular sci-fi series. Fans have been avidly awaiting details of the next film, "Star Wars: Episode VII." "Return of the Jedi" was the third film in the first trilogy of "Star Wars" released between 1977 and 1983. The series is set in a galaxy far, far away, in the past. Iger did not reveal any casting news, other than to confirm the return of the robot character R2D2. The official Star Wars website posted on Monday the new films would feature "a trio of new young leads along with some very familiar faces," and that filming would begin in May at London's famed Pinewood studios. Rumours have swirled for over a year on whether some of the franchise's stars, including Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, would return. Trade magazines have reported that rising stars including Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong'o and "Girls" actor Adam Driver were being considered. The "Star Wars" franchise was created by director George Lucas and comprises six films that have grossed more than $4.4 billion at the worldwide box office since the first film was released in 1977. "Episode VII" will be released on December 18, 2015, and will be directed by J.J. Abrams, who helmed the recent "Star Trek" film franchise reboot. Ewan McGregor: 'Star Wars fans are f***ing w***ers, I've seen Phantom Menace once' Don't expect Ewan McGregor to be walking the red carpet when Star Wars 7 arrives next year, he seems pretty pleased that the franchise is behind him. Because this isn't one of those comments taken wildly out of context situations, here's his exchange with Details this week verbatim: Star Wars fans are notoriously intense. Have you had positive experiences with them? I don't have any experience with them. I've never been to one of the conventions. The people I meet are the f*ckers who want me to sign Star Wars photos so they can sell them on the Internet or the people at premieres who are crushing children against barriers to get me to sign their f*cking picture of Obi-Wan Kenobi. They're not fans—they're parasitical lowlifes and fu*king w*nkers. In almost every online ranking of Star Wars movies, Phantom Menace is rated as the worst. Do you defend the movie or agree with people who think it's a piece of crap? I watched it once, at the premiere, so I'm not in a good position to judge. They had a tall order, the three films I did. The fans waited so long and wanted to feel like they did when they watched the first film, but they were grown-ups by that time. I don't mind the criticism. I've heard it to my face. The same fate could befall the latest round of star actors who have taken the plunge with Star Wars (Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver etc) though the early signs are good for the sequel. Director JJ Abrams seems to get that fans are looking for practical effects rather than a ton of CGI, and the appointment of Lawrence Kasdan suggests the script will remain in the same vein as the original trilogy. http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/ewan-mcgregor-star-wars-fans-are-fing-wers-ive-seen-phantom-menace-once-9821520.html

So he didn't say fans were wankers at all... He said that the people who pretend to be fans for their own selfishness are wankers.

At the end of RotJ, the Emperor and his 2ic were killed alongside their greatest weapon, but the Empire themselves would still be around.

I never read very much of the post VI stuff, mostly read the Pre Episode I and the clone wars novels.

I'm a little bit stunned that anyone else actually read all those EU novels! I really thought they'd play a bigger part in the new movies since from the beginning the EU was tightly controlled so that the story was linear. If a character died in one novel, they couldn't come back in a story set later in the timeline etc. I guess it wasn't all as 'official' as I'd hoped.
