Well you have to understand that when the original star wars came out it was one of a kind. It was revolutionary in movie making history and it's special effects and it wowed audiences all over the world.

Then empire strikes back came out. Now Empire Strikes back is for me my favourite movie and i consider it definitely in the top ten films to come out. Empire Strikes Back is what pushed the Star Wars name into more than just a movie, it forced itself into a cultural icon.

Star wars then inspired games, comics, etc moving into different audiences that may not have cared for movies. I got into Star wars thanks to the Force Unleashed the game and then turned myself into a massive fan of the movies and revenge of the sith was an ok movie.

I guess to answer your original question Star Wars is just simply such a good and joyous part of peoples lives, what makes the originals so iconic is the simple tale of friendship and adventure and with characters that we can relate to and love.

As a proper Star Wars nerd, this new stuff is breaking my heart.

The absolute destruction of 30 years worth of cannon is just something that I'll never get over.

Look on the bright side mate, you're more than likely going to get 30 years more of new content. Hell probably 50.

And the new books that have already come out i have really enjoyed, especially Lords of the Sith.

Think of it like a fresh restart. I really do think it was needed as the EU was going nowhere. And it's not as if the EU was burned to the torch. You can still read the books and comics that you loved before.

Fair enough. No one's ever explained it to me properly. I just get the usual "you have to see it " or "youre one of those people who deliberately don't watch it to make a point" and i genuinely don't. However I'm not into sci fi, i struggle to watch movies that don't have a realistic Element and I'm just more likely to watch a history documentary. I think If i watched it id hate it... which would make this people where everything is star wars even more frustrating. Give me a football game or the history of tuberculosis in eastern prussia anyday. Haha

Getting good early reviews, wouldn't be hard to top the prequels but

He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

Seeing it at 7:30 tomorrow night. Going into complete social media blackout starting midnight tonight  Have been able to avoid spoilers to far, hopefully that can continue.

Gonna try and get through as much of the 'Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens' stuff as I can between today and tomorrow.

How does one film simultaneously encapsulate the essence of a nearly 40-year-old franchise and jettison into a brand new horizon?

That’s been the question on everyone’s mind since Disney acquired Lucasfilm and promised to take Star Wars into uncharted territory without George Lucas at the helm.

The concept of moving forward without Lucas – or even moving forward at all – was understandably met with some skepticism and concern given the uproar that occurred during the franchise’s last revolution in 1999.

There’s no doubt that some diehard Star Wars fans will take umbrage with The Force Awakens for what it lacks. However, it’s safe to say that all audience members should approach the film as if it’s a standalone, or even reboot, within this known universe, versus a strict sequel.

Yes, a few of the major players are featured. Yes, there are a slew of new characters. And while this movie might have just as well been titled, “Star Wars: The Next Generation,” it still holds true to all of the nuances of the original that many remember with fondness.

John Williams’ epic score is maintained throughout, guiding the story in all the magical and familiar ways that made Star Wars so memorable in the first place. Williams’ music direction serves a purpose in one way that perhaps J.J. Abrams’ complex visual direction seems to strategically avoid. He’s not mimicking Lucas’ style or approach, and fans would be foolish to believe that he would’ve tried.

Even taking into account all the bells and whistles that modern-day box office blockbusters can afford, and grading all seven films on a suitable curve accordingly, The Force Awakens may be the most cinematically appealing outing of the franchise yet.

Filmgoers and TV fans should quickly recognize Abrams’ unique stamp of character development, action and humor. Sharing writing credit with Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) and Michael Arndt (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), Abrams introduces several new characters and plotlines that all tie into the fabric of the Star Wars universe.

The actors portraying those new characters certainly don’t disappoint. John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, both of England, play Finn and Rey so well, it’d be tough to see how even nose-in-the-air fans could reasonably complain. Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver are also welcome additions as Poe and Kylo Ren.

It should be noted how much like a Marvel film The Force Awakens appears to be, mostly in the development, construction and casting of a diverse ensemble, as well as how those characters interact throughout the story. It’s certainly to be expected, considering both Marvel and Lucasfilm are owned by the same parent company, but it does lend itself to a very homogenized style of storytelling – admittedly, one that audiences don’t appear to be tiring of anytime soon.

The first hour of the film is probably its strongest, as it sets up the story and introduces the audience to the new world since we last left Han, Leia, Luke & Co., but the pacing is strong as it follows through on the second half with a complexly woven arc.

The story is fun, the characters are enjoyable, the action is engaging. The film isn’t flawless, but what tentpole movie is anymore? Even better is the fact that non-Star Wars fans can come into the story at Episode VII without missing much of a beat.

This film is highly recommended for audiences of all ages, as it hits all the right notes and masterfully remains swear-word free. It’s absolutely a crowd-pleaser, with twists and turns that set up the next installment very well.

Going in, many may feel the brand fatigue that comes with millions of dollars’ worth of advertisements and product placement leading up to the film’s release. Rest assured, however, that once the lights dim in the theatre, all that marketing stagecraft will fall away to reveal a truly engaging flick.

This review does have spoilers of the beginning of the movie so i i'll just link it.

Quote:
Kylo Ren is probably the most conflicted and emotional villain the series has ever had and his performance was outstanding. After many wooden villain performances in the franchise, this was powerful and moving. It also helped that his mask is off a lot – which is a welcome change and helps us see his vulnerability.

Great to hear that we finally have an engaging Star Wars villain other than Vader and the Emperor of course.

Star Wars is back.

This film made me laugh and made me cry and really had characters you could root for, i really had a blast. A very fun, emotional movie that for me puts it in third place on top of ROTJ and behind ESB and ANH

-Kylo Ren is a great character and villain, the film does a very good job in making you hate him (not in a bad way like bad writing) Great character.

-Harrison ford take a bow. I was so skeptical coming in of his performance but he brought his A game. Old han is my favourite Han. Seriously could win some awards for that performance.

-Rey and Finn are great characters in there own right, but Rey is clearly the main character and the heart and soul of the story.

-Han and Leia's scenes together are extremely good but very saddening. A Lot of shits gone in there lives the past thirty years.

Spoiler
RIP Han Solo, what a great arc you had not only in this film but in all four films. You went from a criminal into a heroic father who stepped in the face of death to try and bring back the son you lost. My god i was so close to flat out balling at that scene. Very powerful stuff, and one the greater scenes in the franchise. Anyone else i need someone to help me with my grief.
