Hey do you reckon the A-League could put a team in Liverpool in England. Heard we don't have an A-League team there. What the fuck is going on with that. David de Boob you idiot.

There are kids in Africa that have never heard of the Wanderers. Africa must be in line for a franchise by 2018.

I agree. The only thing is that I think when FFA say they want another two teams they want to do it fairly risk-free.

Me, I'd like to see Illawarra, Canberra, North Qld and one other team in first.

While i agree in part, this league hasn't been successful by playing it safe. In saying that there have been some failures as well, however usually with great reward comes great risk. I would also like to see Wollongong back in the national comp under the guise of Illawarra and Canberra.

I think a part of the problem with the discussion surrounding expansion is that far too many, including those running the game, are thinking far too short term. These things take time, its not a question of will crowds come etc within 2 years, its more like 10 years plus. Investments such as these are long term, and provided correct planning takes place it is possible to turn an Illawarra or Canberra team into a powerhouse given the time. If 10 years of the league has taught us anything its that we have a long way to go and although we are all thinking we have reached great heights, this league is still in its infancy. Let the thing have its time to grow.

I hope FFA have learnt from the Heart problems that you can't have a team that is neither fish nor fowl. There needs to be a strong area identity differentiation in order to create a strong new HAL club.

A "Southern Sydney" entity would have no real point of differentiation from SFC and therefore kind of pointless.

OTOH Wollongong/Illawarra is a football region with its own identity and quite big on local parochialism. And the numbers are there to make it at least as viable as CCM.

Again, South West Sydney is a massive and growing market, forecast to grow by an additional 300K people in just over a decade. THERE'S YOUR MARKET FOR A NEW TEAM RIGHT THERE!

We have to have somewhat different expectations for different areas but while the St George and Shire areas aren't screaming out for their own team/s, Illawarra, South West Sydney, Canberra and North Qld certainly are.

I still don't know why we don't use the NYL as a way to "trial" new football markets. Imagine a Tassie, Gold Coast, Coffs/Mid North Coast, Geelong, Albury/Wodonga supplying teams for the NYL? Local players only, any age. Great experience for the young NYL boys, great opportunity for FFA to see which areas could warrant expansion, great way of promoting football in regional areas.

I believe it would. There are still a lot of unconverted football fans here. It's hard for them or they refuse to identify with a team from the city and they aren't from the west. You'd also bring in a fair few "non-football" fans just because this team is from there area and patriotic about it.

To be fair, they got better crowds in Melbourne than they ever have in England, so obviously they should move to the MCG permanently.

Unless you put it in Campbelltown then the South West is already taken by WSW.

Of course in Campbelltown, that's where the growth is forecast. It will pull some WSW fans away of course, just like Wollongong would pull some SFC fans away. Only natural.

But it's good for football.

Could they change it so the A-league clubs play in the A-league over summer and there national premier league over winter like they do in Brazil then the players would be playing all year round. And teams that should come in are a NT team it would help the game up there some thing the AFL don't have

A-League All Stars in Wollongong camp

The A-League All Stars, featuring Italian superstar Alessandro Del Piero, will set up camp in Wollongong before their blockbuster clash with European giants Juventus next month, in a massive coup for the region.

The Mercury can reveal WIN Stadium will be unveiled on Thursday as the host venue for a six-day camp ahead of the All Stars' one-off match at ANZ Stadium on August 10.

Del Piero will be part of a yet to be finalised 20-man squad which will arrive on August 1 and play a friendly against the Young Socceroos on Tuesday, August 5.

The visit will also include a free fan day before the South Coast Wolves NSW National Premier League fixture against St George on August 3.

As Football South Coast continue a bold push to be part of any expansion of the A-League, Wollongong received a further boost, Sydney FC to take on the Newcastle Jets at WIN Stadium on January 3.

The news comes less than a week after the Wolves landed a home tie against A-League powerhouse Central Coast Mariners in the inaugural FFA Cup Round of 32, to be played on August 20.

Football South Coast CEO Ann-Marie Balliana declared it was another massive endorsement of the region's future A-League prospects.

"This is huge for football here given that we are talking about a training camp before a historic match against Juventus. It is a huge honour for football here to be having the best in the A-League on our doorstep," Balliana said.

"A big part of this training camp will be engaging with the football family. We will look at engaging every single member of our football family, whether it be players, volunteers or our clubs that make it possible week in, week out.

"We want to use this as a celebration for football in the region, especially the rich history we do have with football here."

WIN Stadium has previously hosted A-League preseason, W-League, Matildas and Young Socceroos fixtures and Football South Coast has been locked in negotiations for the All Stars camp and Sydney FC game for the past two months.

"We know the South Coast has always been on the radar of the FFA for either W-League or A-League," Balliana said.

"I think the FFA has learnt some pretty good lessons from A-League teams that haven't quite worked out as planned.

"There is no doubt in my mind that they have a plan.

"They know how they want to approach an A-League expansion and obviously we hope the South Coast will be part of that in some way, shape or form."

The All-Stars - who will be coached by Adelaide United boss Josep Gombau - have a healthy 32-player preliminary squad which will be whittled down to a final 16 through fan voting before Gombau adds another four 'wildcard' selections.

The squad features a list of high-profile players including several Socceroos from the 2014 World Cup campaign.

"It is a huge opportunity for us to celebrate the success the Socceroos did have at the World Cup in the way that they performed," Balliana said.

"It is going to be a great thing for the kids in particular to have access to our Socceroos' heroes."

^^^ I wouldn't hold on to that too hard. Three years ago it was Sydney FC territory, now it is Wanderers. With Pirtek too small to take all the potential fans in the west even with the upgrade and with the region growing from its current 2.1m by 50k a year for the next 25 years at least there will be another team somewhere out in the west sooner rather than later.

If not the gong then surely they have a backup plan in place. If the contract is up for renewal in 2016 does this mean Phoenix have at least 2 more seasons, or one? Will be interesting to see how the AFC see it this time, they seem to be clamping down on a bunch of other things.

Expansion will happen in pairs, don't think we will be seeing an odd number of teams unless something cataclysmic happens. Totally fucks with scheduling.

They are certainly testing the water in Wollongong. They took a Matilda's game to Wollongong in November 2013 and got an ok crowd. South Coast Wolves have been getting 1000 people or more to some games. If they get a good crowd for the Wolves FFA Cup game and the Sydney FC game, the calls will get louder.

I agree with people who say Wollongong would only work as a stand alone club, not a hybrid club like the Dragons NRL club.

Wollongong people are a parochial lot, with a similar population to Newcastle (and the Central Coast) yet it doesn't have a regular sporting team in any code. They only get a handful of Dragons games at WIN stadium every year, and already struggle enough to support them. Whereas Central Coast get 13 A-league games, and Newcastle have both the Knights and Jets.

It's just a shame that it's not a region of a million people, because it would be a no- brainer if it was.
