Wollongong really is a beautiful stadium. Was there for the Young Socceroos vs New Zealand last game, and sitting in that new grandstand, even right up at the back you feel right on top of the action. And should the action get a little dull on field, you've got a beautiful view of the ocean to gaze at. :lol:

I think the Civic stadium was originally going to be 30,000 expandable to 45,000. This seems to have scaled back with the permanent seating now set for between 20,000 - 24,000.

Well tbh I think 20,000 is a better size stadium for the needs of the city now and into the medium term, it would be good if the area is developed so that it can be expanded when needed down the track. They keep referring to the new stadium as a boutique undercover stadium.

Some artist impressions of how it will sit in the area:

As far as the roof goes they are looking at Docklands Stadium and Dunedin Stadium as the two alternative possibilities.

The Civic stadium will be awesome! It will completely change the face of high-end sport in the ACT. Much better than Bruce Stadium which is surrounded by trees and carparks

Yep they point to one of the main objectives with building a new stadium in the city is tol bring a lot of extra revenue to supporting and surrounding businesses in civic. People would be able to frequent the bars and pubs beforehand, go to a game and then go get dinner afterwards, all within walking distance. The public transport infrastructure is already in place and will only be improved with the introduction of light rail to the stadium. It makes match days a whole experience not just drive in to the game and drive out and back home. It brings a lot more value to the project and Canberra as a growing city. There will also be multiple new hotels a stones throw away from the stadium for any visiting fans as they have also been earmarked in the City to the Lake master plan.

Once the FFA cup is done, the FFA need to introduce youth teams for Canberra and Wollongong with the vision to entry in 2017 but start the fan engagement process asap. Canberra should probably wait a further year for the new stadium but get Wollongong in asap while the time is right. Once we've got to 12 solid clubs and an improved TV deal preferably with a Friday and Saturday night match on FTA as well as 50m+ per season, we can see how the Cup teams are faring and npl can be created properly with the 14 best areas represented.

Adelaide city
Northern Fury
Ipswich or Logan
Cairns
South west Sydney
Penrith or one of the most deserving Sydney clubs
Cronulla or another best option Sydney club
Dandenong
Geelong
Hobart
Ballarat or a regional Victorian club
A new Perth or Fremantle side will need to bee looked at by FFA and deemed a good option or not. If not, Melbourne knights or south instead?

There's a 12 team first and second div by 2020. The two most successful 2nd div clubs can be promoted after a few seasons, and two new clubs in their place.

Some very interesting points. I agree that for Canberra and Wollongong to work as with any new A-League club. The need for developing the clubs over time is essential. I love the idea of introducing Canberra and Wollongong to the NYL first and then building up community support from there. What the Fury is doing up north is the right steps for teams to take. Build the clubs up and then put in for admission into the A-League. It builds a much stronger case for entry. Canberra is also lucky in the fact we have a very successful W-League team that also helps to build up a case for entry. Add NYL to that and you have 2 of the three ingredients for a complete Australian professional football club.

Don't get me wrong, I think a Wollongong club would be a great venture to take too, plus I love the idea of a Tasmanian team.

pretty sure its been said in an article that south coast wolves are almost likely going to be rebranded by the current owners as the wollongong wolves next season for the nswpl. and with that the current team should be used since they hold all that history

Does that have something to do with the fact they would have had to wait to be able to rebrand to the Wollongong Wolves due to the copyright of the name being held by the old club?

I did read somewhere that the South Coast Wolves was a 'phoenix' club born out of the financial demise of the old Wolves.

Back to Wollongong Wolves. Name has history and just looks right. South Coast is one of those bland conceptions from marketers who are terrified of people who don't even live near the teams feeling left out like Northern Fury or FNQ Heat rather than just Townsvile Fury and Cairns Heat.

I may change my mind in a year or two down the track amore information comes to light but at this stage Wollongong would appear the clear front runner for the A-League.

Good recent crowds, fantastic suitably sized stadium, is in a football hotspot as far as participation goes and geographically perfect.

Negatives - another bloody NSW club. But so be it.

In a resort somewhere

I have "Liked" the MLS page on facebook.

Its amazing how much money they have.

At the moment they are looking at expanding into Las Vegas and they are looking at building there own stadium.

Every time a new MLS comes into the competition straight away they have their own purpose built stadium.

We could only dream of having at least one of our very own stadiums.

I think it'd be better for the club if they were the Illawarra Wolves. That way it could help encompass those people in 'Southern Sydney', (who for some reason according to this forum feel left out).

on the contrary you could ask if parramatta eels were to fold and re-branded themselves as western sydney eels to open themselves up to a bigger market, would it be as successful

Although South Coast is vague enough to cover everything from the Southern suburbs of Sydney down to Nowra I think expansion should concentrate on a specific region like Illawarra so Illawarra Wolves FC is a great name! =d>

No so much so they don't alienate anyone in the region who doesn't live in Wollongong, but to really represent the whole region and make everyone feel included.
It's also in line with the naming convention of the old Illawarra Steelers, St George Illawarra Dragons and even Illawarriors (Rugby Union). All these outfits have Illawarra in their name for a reason - to represent the wider community ;)

The FFA can put a club in the Sutherland Shire/Kogarah area not for at least 12 years after Illawarra & Canberra enter the A-League.

I wouldn't begrudge them if they went back to Wollongong Wolves, I've nothing against the team or the name, if anything I'm all for it. I just think Illawarra Wolves would be better than keeping South Coast Wolves. The worst thing for the A-League would have been if Gold Coast were still in the A-League, and the FFA brought in South Coast. :lol: Too many Coasts in the one competition. :lol:

In saying that I just want a Wollongong/Illawarra region team. :lol:

"FFA has previously stated that new markets would need to have significant population bases in the millions, not just hundreds of thousands," the FFA spokesman said.

Darwin = No
Alice Springs = No
Townesville = No
Canberra = No
Tasmania = No
Geelong = No until it becomes an outer suburb of Melbourne
Wollongong = ?

And where does that leave CCM & NJ's?

Does this imply more teams for Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane?

"FFA has previously stated that new markets would need to have significant population bases in the millions, not just hundreds of thousands," the FFA spokesman said.

...

And where does that leave CCM & NJ's?
...

Exactly where they are assuming that they continue to have owners. The quote was specifically talking about new markets. If Tinkler or Charlesworth decide to call it quits without a buyer then I would think all bets are off.

Tinkler already has, and Charlesworth is obviously open to the idea

Darwin = No
Alice Springs = No
Townesville = No
Canberra = No
Tasmania = No
Geelong = No until it becomes an outer suburb of Melbourne
Wollongong = ?

And where does that leave CCM & NJ's?

Does this imply more teams for Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane?

Geelong is closer to Melbourne than Woolongong to Sydney by about 12km, but Sydney/Woolongong has about 20% more people.

But, sort of seems that way.

But given the response by Wollongong supports, they did themselves no harm in making it known that there is a market there.

Canberra is a captive audience. They only have the Canberra Raiders and get a couple of AFL games and cricket matches there each year.

Canberra needs a franchise team, Brisbane can have the Strikers and South Coast would be sublime for their region. South Hobart to stay the same for Hobart.
