Redlands still suffering from a massive injury list but still 2nd in the league. At 3-1 Redlands could have gone on and won 5-1 but it all changed 2nd half. Still don't think that Olympic will win the league long way to go yet but fair play to them tonight we collapsed and they took advantage

Edited by passandmove: 17/5/2013 10:37:35 PM What makes you think they wont win it? They've choked before, Redlands, Strikers, Sunshine Coast and Fury will all have their portions of form and things will change. They do have a very potent attack but really their defence is very dodgy last nights game could have easily been 7-6 (both teams have issues with defence) however Redlands whole championship winning defence from last year are still injured but I think this is Olympics best? Time will tell but they did deserve to win last night so credit to them and they sit 9pts clear. As for Redlands when the best 11 are on the paddock we will be flying!

Quote:Brisbane City 5 (Dougall, Frazier 2, Sakurai, Murray) def Northern Fury 0Brisbane City 1st team continued their best senior winning streak in years, recording their 7th straight victory over a talented Northern Fury side. Fury came into the game on a high after defeating 2nd place Redlands in Townsville and a spirited performance vs league leaders Olympic the week before. The first half ran at a frantic pace with both sides having their share of decent opportunities- City build up play well from the back, Fury looked ominous with electric paced fast breaks. A set play saw a Ken Dougall first time volley from a Nathan Bird corner that wouldn't have been out of place on the EPL highlights reel. This was then followed up by a goal of equal quality from Eric Frazier giving the Spencer Park faithful an absolute treat. Half time 2-0 City. CIty were adamant to close off the game in the 2nd half and were keen to prove they mean business. However Fury obviously thought otherwise as they threw everything at the City defence and dominated early in the 2nd stanza. Balance of play slowly returned to the home side as more and more passes began to stick with Antonio Murray adding City's 3rd to heap more pressure on Fury. Fury began to press more and more as they tirelessly worked on pressurizing the City midfield and defence how held strong. City continued to gain the ascendency with Eric Frazier grabbing a brace and defender Yoshi Sakarui scoring his first ever goal for the club. Final Score- Brisbane City 5 Northern Fury 0 Given little hope by outsiders this season, City continue to go about their business quietly (although not so quietly anymore) and now see themselves in equal 2nd place with the Brisbane Strikers. They are under no illusions about how tough the following month is going to be: 4 Away games vs four of the toughest sides in the NPL: Redlands, Moreton Bay, Olympic FC & Strikers. But all teams need to face each other and seven straight wins regardless of the opposition in no mean feat. In seasons gone by City would drop points against teams they shouldn't have, so its a huge leap forward to be able to grind out results when required. Out of todays 5 goals, only 1 came from the leagues leading marksman, Antonio Murray. City now have scored the 3rd highest number of goals (35) and boast the 2nd lowest number of goals conceded (16) Next weeks clash with one of the favourites to win the competition, Redlands at the Cleveland Showgrounds is bound to be another great NPL game and one which our boys will be well prepared for. https://www.facebook.com/BrisbaneCityFC?fref=ts

Like you say that's the way it goes sometimes. Next home game is the derby. Will be a cracker!

Great result for the Strikers on Sat night. Was a little nervous about that one but 3-0 is a superb return at a difficult away venue. Chatted to the Strikers coach today who said that they were deliberately a little more direct than usual. Whatever the tactics it seemed to get the desired result.
A pity I couldn't get there. Fury is definitely the "to do" away trip of the NPL. Hopefully next season I can recruit a few vocal Strikers supporters to make the trip and throw a song or two back at the F-Troop. ;)

Redlands Utd 3 Strikers 0
After a close 1st half the Reds took control and cleaned up against a rather beleaguered looking strikers team devoid of ideas.
For Redlands slowly but surely the injury list is improving and the 2nd half of the season looks promising. The Reds will be there when it counts.

Quote:Roar Skipper An NPL Fan Socceroo and Brisbane Roar captain Matt Smith has given the thumbs up to the National Premier Leagues after watching his former club Brisbane Strikers play against Redlands United on Saturday night. The two time A-League Grand Final winner braved the wet conditions at Cleveland Showgrounds alongside hundreds of fellow Queensland NPL fans as the Devils defeated Strikers 3-0. Despite the constraints that international and professional football places on his time, Smith explained that he was “very impressed” by what he had seen and been told about the new competition. “This is my first NPL game due to family commitments and obviously (commitments) with the Roar,” Smith explained. “But I’ve heard through the grapevine that both Strikers and Redlands play a good brand of football and that’s certainly in evidence. There’s some good strategies, some good tactics and there’s some boys that can play,” Smith enthused. Smith admitted he was not an impartial observer though and was unashamedly lending his support to his former club. “Before I played professionally, I played at the Strikers. I made quite a lot of good friends in that particular team and there’s a couple playing tonight – I came to support them,” Smith said. “I’m always in contact with Largey (Striker head coach and technical director David Large) and obviously the captain Chay Hews is one of my best friends here and Jonti Richter as well. “So it’s nice to come down to support them because they come down and support us during the A-League season.” Smith’s rise to the top ranks of Australian professional football serves to inspire many young players, their coaches and parents, right across Queensland. The English-born central defender rose through the grades with now NPL clubs Palm Beach Sharks and Brisbane Strikers before drawing the attention of A-League club North Queensland Fury –reborn in the NPL as Northern Fury FC. Smith said his time in Townsville had demonstrated the importance of the regional teams to Queensland football. “What happened with the North Queensland Fury (in the A-League) was a bit of a shame,” Smith explained, “There’s a good community base up there.” Smith however acknowledged the work of his former Fury teammate and now Fury player-coach Gareth Edds, saying he is “doing a great job”. “It’s good that regional teams can build competitive teams and it’s important for the league that the regional teams are competitive, particularly in Townsville.” Smith explained that he wasn’t the only member of the Roar squad to keep tabs on the NPL. “Although the A-League boys don’t come out and watch every single week, they certainly know what’s going on.” “I know Shane Stefanutto is a keen follower of what’s happening within Brisbane and south-east Queensland. We’re often discussing in training who’s doing well and who’s not.” “We’ve got Luke Brattan down tonight too, his brother Zak plays for Redlands; I know that he goes and watches all the Redlands games which is great.” Smith also said he was looking forward to the Roar’s preseason fixtures that include matches against his former clubs Strikers and Sharks as well as fellow NPL clubs Western Pride and Brisbane City. “We’re playing a number of preseason games, both against Brisbane clubs and NPL clubs, so that will give a good opportunity for players to play and certainly show us what they can do.” “At the end of the day, as with myself, all you need is a club or a coach to give you a chance.” “If they can do that in the preseason matches and play well in their competitions then they can be recognised through our scouting networks.” http://www.sportingpulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?client=1-9385-0-0-0&sID=269940&&news_task=DETAIL&articleID=24069784
