GabMVFC wrote:How did you guys end up choosing which science you want to do at uni? I have my heart set on doing Bachelor of Science but I don't know what to major in when I love physics, biology and chemistry equally. Pick all 3 sometime in first year and decide afterwards? Should still be able to accumulate enough credit points by the end of the degree for your major. I found the chemistry pretty different (better) compared to HSC chemistry. Probably worth looking at career options and where you might wanna finish up when deciding Edited by jparraga: 23/7/2014 01:35:16 AM

Hi all Advice for potentially going to uni as mature age student Currently all of my cents are diploma ( management & project management) and with 10 years experience in IT...I struggle with exams but seem ok with assignments. Thinking of a commerce degree @ open universities or look at MBA through a college. Both will need to be part time What are your thoughts

Anyone working in the engineering industry here?
Thinking of going into a Bach. of Engineering after I finish VCE, but the ATAR is quite high (91.5 for entry into Monash - my goal). Do companies pay that much attention to your uni in this field? Obviously, the more prestigious uni the better, but is there that much difference between putting Monash and RMIT on your resume?

I don't see which uni you go to as being that big a deal.

The good thing about Monash is that they have a general first year engineering course, then you decide which specific path you go down. Does the specific engineering field dictate the uni choice? pv4 wrote:I work in MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, mostly in the mining industry.
I don't see which uni you go to as being that big a deal. But if you look at a resume, and you see a top-tier university vs. an average one (don't know the names of unis in NSW) doesn't that make a difference.

Most unis tend to have a pretty vague first year, it's still good to have an idea though because if you do the general first year and decide to do chemical, you waste one subject at my uni. I just finished mech this semester, time to get a job #-o . It's ok - pretty challenging but sometimes interesting, what would you say you're good at/like?

I'm doing all math/sciences for my VCE, so I'm pretty good at those
I enjoy that sort of stuff, so engineering is the only thing that really appeals to me.

I enjoy that sort of stuff, so engineering is the only thing that really appeals to me. I am from QLD so I'm not really sure what a VCE is, anyway it doesn't matter, just take from this what you will. Basically the university I went to (University of Queenland), engineering is really quite difficult because they make it very theoretical, many people in first and second year get caught out and change course or leave university because they can't handle the increase in difficult of maths and engineering physics. So I asked what you were good at before, what I mean to say is like specifically what areas of physics and/or chemistry are you good at? You have to do a range of it in mechanical but you would not have done some of these at school - fluid mechanics, thermodynamics (heat transfer/ energy etc), some electrical, statics, dynamics etc. I chose mechanical because I'm not excellent at electrical stuff but all the others I am quite good at. Maybe have a think about that, but you'll get a taste of each one at uni anyway. Most engineering degrees are pretty good for employment prospects, though I am here with my degree without a job! Things will be better when you finish though. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

Went back to Uni today. Had a 9am lecture. All sweet. Has a fucking 5 hour gap till my next class. Good time you'd say to print off learning guides, buy books, maybe do a bit of reading of course content? Nope, nup, nil, fuck nah, fuck that, bugger off, damn no. Pissed off up the local with a mate at 10.30am. Was drinking there till approx 6pm this evening. Still rather inebriated. Oh The Mill, how the last 6 weeks have been tough.

When are you free next week? Has been too long. At Uni Wednesdays & Thursdays. Generally free in the late afternoons. Off Mondays and Tuesdays. Just quietly, I hear a Sunday session at Bar Century calling. Mind you, you did mention the Tollgate has their pool tables back. And those $10 burgers are hard to say no too. :-k :-k :-k I'm also thinking about getting a Sunday Afternoon lawn bowls pissup organized. Somewhere Central so we're all no hopping across Sydney.

Parra RSL is cheap for lawn bowls but you need 10 people.

Only got two classes plus industry placement for my last semester of uni.
Had Advanced Radio today, pretty chilled. Just had to go into the Uni radio station, re-write radio news articles from other stations for our news reader/teacher. It steps up a gear by the end of the semester though, you end up writing 4 stories an hour by the end of semester.
Also doing journalism features on Thursday mornings, have to write two feature articles for the paper and that's pretty much it.
Got into The Sunday Times Sport section in Perth for industry placement as well.
