Prisoner attempts to flee courtroom PROPERTY LISTINGS Search for a property online now A FOOTBALL Toowoomba grand final replay headlines round one of the FFA cup knockout competition in the South-West Zone.
Eight grass roots teams from across the south-west have entered the national knock-out competition with Gatton and Willowburn to face off in the first round.
Gatton will be keen for revenge after the Redbacks suffered a 4-0 loss to Willowburn in last year's decider.
The Redbacks host the Magpies at Gatton tonight in what will be their first opportunity to atone for that loss.
"It is a grand final rematch we are looking forward to and we are confident our men will go far in this tournament," Gatton president Wayne Richardson said.
Willowburn will be determined to stay alive in the competition though.
The Magpies progressed past the initial rounds of the inaugural FFA Cup last year and met National Premier Leagues Queensland club South-West Thunder in what was a thrilling regional play-off.
The Thunder prevailed in extra-time so Willowburn would love another crack at the NPLQ outfit. http://www.thechronicle.com.au/news/a-football-toowoomba-grand-final-replay-headlines-/2566107/

Two of these will be played today at Barnier Park in Junction Hill. At 3pm, Nambucca Strikers will take on Westlawn Tigers with the winner to enjoy a bye in the upcoming round. The main event at 5pm features Maclean Bobcats and Coffs Coast Tigers. The winner of that match faces a difficult assignment next start, taking on Boambee Bombers who last week had a lopsided victory over Woolgoolga United. Top game of the weekend has to be the meeting tomorrow at 3pm of Coffs United and 2014 Club Coffs Premier League champion Urunga FC at McLean Street Oval in Coffs Harbour. It will be the Raiders first public showing of the new season but the Lions again displayed the ability to be among the frontrunners despite doing it the hard way against Northern Storm in last weekend's round. Down 2-0 at the main break after a lackadaisical half, coach Mike Smith first remedied the situation by introducing Ben Mackay and Scott Goddard before the final substitution of Nathan Silvy. "We had about 10 chances in that first half but couldn't convert them, whereas they had two chances and made sure," Smith said. Level 2-2 at full time, goalkeeper Ian Davie delivered the magic ingredient that helped the Lions pull off a 5-4 penalty shootout win. The championships will be trials for the combined NCIS teams, to play in the NSW Combined Independent Schools (CIS) competition. "Hosting the NCIS Football Championship allows us to contribute to and strengthen the relationships that form the foundation of healthy competition across a wide variety of sports," tournament director Will Caldwell said. "It also provides both immediate and long term benefits to our students by offering a representative pathway to CIS on our doorstep, and raises the profile of football in the schools." Apart from Bishop Druitt, schools from Armidale, Tweed Heads, Ballina, Kempsey and Lismore are taking part. http://www.coffscoastadvocate.com.au/news/top-game-shaping-up-as-a-ripper/2565768/

You could easily play a local tournament and then play off. Run it concurrent with the lower tiers' qualifications. Same with Ballarat, Bendigo and Wadonga. That way the winning side has more incentive to travel.

TheSelectFew wrote:Is the Geelong region FA associated with the FFV? Why arent more teams from that competition playing? The Geelong Association is part of the FFV, but all the strong clubs in Geelong play in the Melbourne State Leagues anyway. Some of the Geelong Based state league clubs field their 3rd's teams in the Geelong comp. North Geelong Warriors, Corio, Geelong SC, Geelong Rangers, Surf Coast, Bell Park and Lara all play in the NPL or State Leagues. The Geelong only clubs, probably feel it's not worth playing in the FFA Cup yet, if it means having to travel to lose anyway. Once the FFV gets regionalised qualifying, we might see more clubs entering. There are plenty of clubs in the Geelong, Gippsland, Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton and Wodonga leagues, even Mildura and Warrnambool, who arn't entering currently because of the travel. Jake Jones RELATED ITEMS Clinton women make it into grand final Clinton women make it into grand final Clinton to take on Frenchville for title Drama in semi-final as Clinton snatches win SHOW MORE PROPERTY LISTINGS Search for a property online now GOALS from Mitch Innocend and Brendon Hancock have given Derek Horton a classy win to return to the coaching position of Clinton's top football side.
The Central Queensland Premier League side dismissed a gallant effort by local team Yaralla to progress in the Football Federation Australia Cup.
The final result of 2-0 was a positive start to the season for both sides, and Horton thought it was a deserved score.
"For our first game, we were rusty," he said.
"We dominated and I thought we were never going to lose."
The next step for Clinton is a match against either Frenchville or Emerald, while Yaralla will prepare for the local season.
Horton said there are a few parts of Clinton's game which need improving before any further competition matches.
"Our defence was really good; we need some polish and we could have scored a few more goals," he said.
"They are a quality side though."
It was Horton's first taste of the cup since it was introduced last year, and the coach has bought into the idea behind the fixtures and wants to take Clinton as far as possible.
He thinks the side has what it takes to win the CQ Premier League as well.
The whole club is impressing Horton, a memorial football day yesterday capping off a big weekend for the boys in green.
"We had over 100 wanting to play, so when you added up the partners and kids, it was huge," he said.
"It is a big weekend of football." http://www.gladstoneobserver.com.au/news/clinton-starts-solidly-with-2-0-over-yaralla/2567398/

Quote:Cup wrap: South Springvale are back, Kings win again! John Greco By John Greco They were the fairytale story of the inaugural Westfield FFA Cup last year and Victorian giant-killers South Springvale have potentially started another cup run with a preliminary round win over the weekend. South Springvale, who made the last 16 of the national competition in 2014, needed extra-time to see off Western Suburbs 3-2 in a thriller at Thomas Street Reserve. Their win was the standout result of a weekend of matches right around the country that saw upsets and plenty of goals. Victorian State League 5 outfit Kings Domain FC continued their winning streak, upsetting Cairnlea – who are four divisions above them – 1-0 on Saturday. Sunsbury United were the most impressive over the weekend, thrashing Whitehorse United 7-1 while Sydenham Park (6-0) and Diamond Valley United (6-1) also had big wins over Old Melbournians and Old Carey respectively. It took extra-time for Melton Phoenix to beat Keilor Wolves 1-0, Monbulk Rangers were too good for Altona City 4-2 and Preston Lions edged out Knox City 3-2. Tasmania started their preliminary rounds with New Town Eagles getting the better of Ulverstone 3-2. Matches are also in full swing in Queensland over the last week with some early round shocks. A hat-trick to Darren Maxwell has seen Virginia United dispose of Capalaba 4-2, despite playing three divisions below them. Bayside United and Centenary Stormers also both bagged four goals in 4-1 wins over Westside and Mooroondu respectively.
