Agree. For all their apparent influence, can anyone really suggest they have displayed any real clout. Look at what the AFL can achieve? A brief state of play in football sees - Stadium deals are diabolical - The media still have campaigns against sokkah - there seems to be litttle government help in various states - The police are clearly acting on behalf of AFL interests as shown by statements last year. Where's Frank's influence going? That 1 vote at the world cup? Getting Elle to be in the presentation? So replacing Lowy with anyone else would fix all of this? I didnt say that. I'm questioning his influence, or lack of willingness to use it. But what I'm questioning more is what would having his son being freely handed the reigns achieve? I realise you didn't say that but Lowy seems to be a lightning rod for a lot of 'h8ters' here. Lowy is one chairman. The AFL has dozens across a multitude or organisations. What influence he would have would against all of them would be marginal at best. Maybe he already has tried? Who knows? The son thing is another matter entirely. yeah fair enough. But yeah if he has tried and failed then that calls into question his influence :) I think Lowy has done a lot of good, but overall, from mainstream Australia, football ( as a game) appears to be still treated much the same it was 10 years ago.

Whilst on the subject - I've said this before - we're constantly being told about the huge political benefit of having Lowy in charge at the FFA... Surely he can use this amazing political influence to push the Queensland authorities into making a sensible, mutually beneficial, stadium deal for Roar.
Edited by Benjamin: 3/9/2015 10:56:00 AM Hahaha im sorry but this makes me laugh. On the one side you are telling the FFA to give in to the demands of the PFA, but then on the other you're expecting the FFA to step in to help the Roar. Where do you think the money is coming from? If you give in to the PFA the FFA clearly will have even less funds than they have now to help out clubs such as the Jets and the Roar. So which do you prefer? Because you were previously quite vocal about the FFA giving the PFA what they want. Money doesn't grow on trees mate. The FFA clearly haven't got the funds to step in otherwise they would have. Yet the PFA are still demanding more?

How can you deny the right for South Melbourne to enter the league, with numerous corporate ties and stable management of a club playing rent free in a boutique stadium, close to the countries second largest city; whilst your club continues to provide poor press and appears to be on the verge of collapse for months?
Does it pain you that much that the community club run by migrants is better managed than your franchise? Did I read somewhere that you need a minimum of $6 million a year to run an A-League club? Is that the approximate figure or is it more or less? Back when Fury was going through its dramas, FFA quoted $5mil a season. -PB

I'm not telling the FFA to give in to the PFA's demands - I'm questioning why they have chosen to negotiate the way they have. Why agree verbally that players should share in increased revenue but then refuse to put in on paper?
And I'm not expecting the FFA to 'help' Roar - I'm looking for the governing body to ensure the best interests of the sport.Where do you think the money is coming from? If you give in to the PFA the FFA clearly will have even less funds than they have now to help out clubs such as the Jets and the Roar. So which do you prefer? Because you were previously quite vocal about the FFA giving the PFA what they want. If the FFA agreed to the main point of contention - they wouldn't be $1 worse off - it's about a SHARE of FUTURE income.
As for which I prefer - I prefer not to have the players hovering on the edge of strike action over a point that the FFA could quite easily concede without giving up $1, and I prefer not to have one of the key franchises in the league in turmoil a few weeks out from the start of the season. Money doesn't grow on trees mate. The FFA clearly haven't got the funds to step in otherwise they would have. Yet the PFA are still demanding more? Again, PFA's key demand is that players benefit when the game does - second most important is that player income be protected. As you say, FFA clearly haven't got the funds... Pity that - we keep getting told what a bang-up job they are doing. Pity we haven't got a benevolent, massively rich benefactor who could step in and save the day.

Chalk and cheese what Lowy has done for football in this country and I hope Steve continues in his father's footsteps. Nice attempt to deflect - but I've made it clear in the past that times needed to change and Soccer Australia were the inept source of the games problems pre 2003. Again, I don't want anyone 'Let' into the competition - just owners with sound business models... Which would appear to stick a knife right through Roar's heart.

They would easily make your 3.5 mil target, with 3-4 guaranteed sell outs against the other Melbourne clubs and further sponsorships. I'm not disputing anything. I'm asking. Please learn to read.

With regards to the stadium deal that everyone whinges about this article steps out the problems for Suncorp tenants. Yes the article is old but it's interesting to see the disparity between hiring stadiums in Brisbane vs stadiums in Sydney. Even if it's half what it was, and there's no evidence of that, the Brisbane deal is exorbitant. From 2011. This year's sell out A-League grand final at Suncorp between the Brisbane Roar and Central Coast Mariners cost Football Federation Australia $750,000 in event and transport charges, compared to the $150,000 fee incurred when soccer's big game was played at the SFS.http://www.smh.com.au/business/stadium-rent-to-cost-a-bomb-for-brisbane-20110719-1hn8v.htmlHave a look at what the Titans were paying what the Roosters were paying. Again, I realise the article is old, but it's the figures relative to the respective tenants that is interesting. Edited by munrubenmuz: 3/9/2015 04:04:59 PM

If you've ever followed any of the Brisbane Roar threads regarding this you'd know that a stadium cannot be privately owned if it holds more than 9999 people in Qld and has to be built by the government. (Or something like that. Somebody else will know the exact figures about that.) Not to mention the difficulty the QR and the Roar would have trying to raise $300 m to pay for a specialty boutique stadium. Edited by munrubenmuz: 3/9/2015 04:13:44 PM

11.mvfc.11 wrote:If the stadium deals for professional clubs are debilitating enough to have killed multiple clubs across multiple codes, questions surely have to be asked of the government.
What right do they have to charge over the odds for something integral to our culture as a sports nation? This is where it gets murky. Suncorp was developed to hold 50000 maroons supperters a few times a year and 20000 broncos supporter during the NRL season. Broncos comfortable get the numbers they need to turn a profit on game day. Brisbane Lions had a stadium deal that locked all QLD AFL games into Brisbane for 20years in return for rental concessions. AFL signed that as at the time a GC time was not a reality. They had to pay the GABA trust to break allow a concession for GC suns to play from the gold coast (although in the first season the GABA almost made all the Suns v Lions games happen in Brisbane). Speaking of the Suns, the AFL tipped 10mil into the Metricon stadium redevelopment assuring the club would make game day profits. So the Brisbane/Gold Coast area has 4 big stadiums. It also has 6 big teams. Lions - Broncos - Suns - Roar - Reds - Titans Only 3 of those teams get screwed because the AFL and NRL had the head start and stadiums were deals were tailored around them. NRL Titans were just badly managed and the stadium should have stayed at 20000 not been expanded to 27000 before construction. So the Government is sitting Pretty with 3 big tenants comfortably using 3/4 of it stadiums with no problems.

Also freeze out Suncorp and play all Socceroos matches there, and advise the NRL to do the same for Kangaroos games and State of Origin where possible.
Edited by 11.mvfc.11: 3/9/2015 04:06:33 PM Biggest problem is that in order to build such a stadium you would need to get planning permission from (effectively) the same people who currently control all the other stadiums in town. How happy do you think they would be to grant said planning permission? Whilst it's possible that they would be unable to actually refuse the permissions, they could very easily make them conditional of all infrastructure changes being included in the cost of the stadium (ie/ you can build you stadium but YOU have to pay for all the road changes and YOU have to pay for public transport upgrades, etc.) Unfortunately, the government over there have sport, football in particular, over a barrel. Just a pity we don't have the political influence to win through.

It would just take time and a lot of effort. If there hasn't been a public revolt over the prices they charge franchises, and the frequency of franchises folding (across sports) as a result - why would there be one just because someone wanted to build a stadium..?
