Saw a decent point made on twitter before that the debate about gun control was effectively over after Sandy Hook. Once America decided killing children was bearable the debate was over.
Not necessarily true. Obama and the senate both passed gun control measures and its likely that the house would have as well but leader of the house John Boehner, didn't let it go up for a vote.

That's pretty much the crux of the issue. It doesn't matter if the Democrats have control of the Executive (President and co), the Republican representation in Congress is strong enough to overrule their reforms. Something as big as gun control is not going to happen whilst the Republicans dominate both the Senate and (especially) the House.

Something is going to have to drastically change in how the Democrats run campaigns before a President like Obama can really start causing real change.
Thats pretty much the case with every bill the democrats want to pass. Unless they back the repubs into a corner where they have to vote on something or shut down the government, the only way for the democrats can pass anything is to have a majority of the house, 60+ seats in the senate to overrule a filibuster and the presidency. Thats how Healthcare and the stimulus was passed before 2010 and nothing since.

Left trait? The nra have become a power on their own. Some republicans cant stand them due to the unresvered power they hold in the country. The problem is that the minoirty who agree with gun control are the ones the nra are turning away .

mental health issues and background checks also needs to be addressed here, its a common thread with most of these mass shooters

there needs to be a more effective way of sharing this information at a federal level

I didn't know that Obama was suggesting a gun ban? Oh thats right, he isnt. Anyone who is against background checks for guns seriously needs a head check. If you think it is ok for anyone to be able to stroll down to Walmart and buy an assault rifle, please kindly remove yourself from my country.

I was responding to MVFCs_Arsenals assertion that the second amendment should be done away with all together.

I agree with stronger background checks and mentally ill etc, but not an outright ban on the weapons themselves.

Ahh fair enough. But the amendment is just that. An amendment that amended something else. Logic dictates that this amendment can also be amended.
