Wow i honestly didnt expect that result given how impressed i was with last years team, do not change a successful group of players!
Is there a replay on youtube?
From winning 4-0 to a 1-1 draw is a not good sign and start given others teams will be stronger, cliveundies is right this squad might be weaker due to the bias from the coaches choosing the FFA COE players instead using the same team from last year whilst adding new players that have more quality on the table. When will the FFA learn...pick your best team!

Edited by Barca4life: 10/7/2016 09:30:05 PM I didnt want to suggest any bias, just that some players had not accepted places at the CEO from last years squad so their places had been given to other players that i believed to be not quite at the same level. Now if you have given a CEO spot to a young player on the basis they will play for Australia then its probably only correct that you take him to the 1st tournament. Lets relax and see how it evolves.

Edited by Barca4life: 10/7/2016 09:30:05 PM if this is what the FFA COE is capable of, our future is pretty bleak. its like they chose the worst players and placed them in a full time squad.

What is going on is some of the A-League clubs have told the players that they will be better off with them and some of the players have taken that option. Now the CEO has a choice to take the players they have been working with that have moved to Canberra and will be very familiar with the desired playing style or leave them in the cold and select the players who decided not to take up a place. Do we need a CEO is probably the 1st question

Do we need a CEO is probably the 1st question The national teams should be first ahead of any club or COE that is there, pick the best teams should be the number priority and then work from there. Agree that the COE should not be in place but then again when Ron Smith was there it worked well when the age group 18 to 19 year olds, so maybe go back to that path? With the a-league club having youth academies in place the players have the right to stay at home if the environment is good enough, but when Tony Vidmar says that not picking these other players because the COE players that took up scholarships that want to play for aus more than the guys that rejected the offers is just bullshit and we all know the politics that go round aus football. The COE guys deserve some credit for wanting to reach the pro level but the national team is about choosing the BEST team and that should be the main priority. The dynamic have changed since the a-league clubs have started their academies Edited by Barca4life: 10/7/2016 10:05:41 PM

The norm in other countries is that young players develop better aiming for senior pro level, by being at pro club, and having exposure to senior players, senior coaches and striving to become a senior pro in that particular club.
There should be a pathway at pro clubs.

I think you have hit the nail on the head with your last sentence, maybe the players should now be brought into camp before a tournament just the same as the senior team. It could be. What one has to realise though is that great youth players often stagnate, plateau, or hit peaks and troughs in their development. Some of those players choosing to stay with HAL clubs, and not play for Australia, may end up better long term. However, some outsiders think this is a strength of the Australian development system. Some view the fact that Oz players sometimes go through under 16, under 20, under 23 national teams, and play in tough conditions and varying scenarios is a better transition to senior national team football, than other should be powerhouses, like England. Most of the best senior international teams in the world do it - better than anybody else. yes I do, because although I like good looking passing football it isn't something that seems to come natural to Aussies (lots of reasons for this including the congested sporting landscape), nor do I believe it's one of their strengths. In the balkans latin countries etc you have kids that go on the streets at 8am with a football, they come in at 10pm. That's why they are such good natural technical players. Also interesting to see a team today win one of the top tournaments in the world, and they didn't even want the football for most of the tournament. You reckon they're sitting around evaluating their pass count or having toom much of a good time to even think about it? There is no right or wrong way to play the game, but maybe we need to consider what our strengths really are (if we have any) Edited by tsf: 11/7/2016 08:39:34 AM

^ having said that, I think a football philosophy is good thing to have, I'm just not sure we will be that successful at following it, how long has it been so far 10 years (genuinely don't know)? None of our kids that have grown up and trained this new system seem that good or technically gifted yet.

Edited by tsf: 11/7/2016 08:48:28 AM The kids who have grown up with it since the age of 9 are now 17 yrs old All senior teams have had some influence of our national football philosophy. Id put the start of this either when jan had some of our youth teams or when postecoglu started at roar. So maybe 2010ish. That coincides roughly when we started exporting youth that actually got playing time in decent leagues again. The youth we have exported have gradually improved and our acl results have gradually improved its tricky though clubs have just started building academies old soccer and new football is hopelessly divided so the resources and fan bases are hopelessly divided we have only 9 professional teams and no second division we have 24 fulltime youth players compared to about 5000 in germany thats a pitiful amount of infrastructure to take on the big hitters Interested to see why we only got a 1-1 result against myamnar when the previous generation got 4-0 :-k

For years the best were mollycoddled behind AIS and COE walls, and when they're finally released from the program into the professional landscape they suddenly realise they're not the be all and end all. I am sincerely hoping that A-League academies address this issue with the current youth development. Using the Vuck as an example, in their first season in the NPL1 (second division) they destroyed everyone and got promoted to the NPL. This season, they are struggling, playing against better opponents and are nailed on for relegation. This doesn't hurt the boys, it will harden them up significantly - they will have to look for creative solutions to problems rather than just relying on 'the curriculum' to hold possession and pass it around the back. We need problem solvers, not rigid robots who preach nothing but triangles and possession - as Portugal showed this morning, you don't always need to play pretty football to win matches. The COE should be used as a training camp every three months where the best in the country are invited to hone their skills and tactical knowledge. Every school holidays you bring them together for two weeks in Canberra, under the eyes of Gombau, and teach them extra stuff on top of what they're learning in their club environments.
